www.thecure.com AT LAST THE BOXSET! FIRST THE PUFF... THE CURE: JOIN THE DOTS: B-SIDES AND RARITIES, 1978-2001 (THE FICTION YEARS) Offers Fans First-Ever Collection of Hard-To-Find Gems Career-Spanning Four-Disc Set In Stores January 26th/27th, 2004 As The Cure nears its third decade at the forefront of pop culture, Universal, Rhino and Fiction/Elektra are celebrating the band's remarkable career with THE CURE: JOIN THE DOTS: B-SIDES AND RARITIES, 1978-2001 (THE FICTION YEARS), a spectacular four-disc treasury of hard-to-find gems, never-before-seen photos, track by track breakdowns and extensive liner notes. "The first thing I ever did when I got a new single," remembers Cure vocalist Robert Smith, "was flip it over and play the other side. I always hoped the B-side would give me another version of the artist, something as good as the A-side but somehow different. I expected great B-sides from the artists I loved... " Come 1978, when The Cure released their debut single, 'Killing An Arab,' Smith expected no less from himself than he had from his heroes. It's evident from the very first cut in this box set, '10:15 Saturday Night,' that he intended Cure B-sides to be every bit as captivating as their better-known A-sides. Among the 70 original and digitally re-mastered recordings included on JOIN THE DOTS are 'Another Journey By Train' (b-side of 'A Forest'), 'Sugar Girl' (b-side of 'Just Like Heaven'), 'Halo' (b-side of 'Friday I'm In Love'), a cover of David Bowie's 'Young Americans' and many, many more. THE CURE: JOIN THE DOTS: B-SIDES AND RARITIES, 1978-2001 (THE FICTION YEARS) will be available January 26/27th, 2004 at all retail outlets and at www.rhino.com for a suggested retail price of $54.98. Robert Smith has Produced this first-ever collection of specialty songs, which includes a 76-page book filled with rare photos from Smith's own archives, a track-by-track breakdown from Smith and bassist Simon Gallup and original commentary written by noted U.K. scribe Johnny Black. Alternative before alternative was the norm, The Cure formed in 1976 when Smith, a 17-year-old attending school in Sussex, formed The Easy Cure with schoolmates Michael Dempsey (bass), Lol Tolhurst (drums) and local guitar hero Porl Thompson. The quartet began writing their own songs almost immediately, and quickly compiled an impressive repertoire of original material that included the seminal classics 'Boys Don't Cry' and '10:15 Saturday Night.' Over the course of the 27 years that followed, they weathered lineup changes and forged an extraordinary career highlighted by an astonishing run of artistic and commercial achievement, including chart-topping hit singles, gold and platinum records, countless awards, critical acclaim and an international fan base that follows the band with near religious fervor. They have secured their place in music history by shaping modern rock as we know it today. In January of 2003, The Cure signed worldwide to Ross Robinson's iam Records, heralding the start of another chapter in the history of one of the few bands in the world able to continually combine innovation, integrity and intelligence with mass global success. ...AND THEN THE HIT! :jawdrop:
awesome! |
I wish I could just get the first disc by itself.
I actually had all the 45s and vinyl albums that those songs originally appeared on. |
This will be mine, come January.
Awesome. Just bloody awesome. (I'm hoping this comes in a neat box, too.) |
Finally, the exploding boy and a few hours after this on cd.
FINALLY! |
I guess now I can sell all my CDS. Man, it was expensive and time consuming to put those together :(
|
That is a lot of cure.
Whoa. |
Originally posted by Neitzl Finally, the exploding boy and a few hours after this on cd. FINALLY! So, is this set "complete" or are some songs missing? I have all of the Disintegration, Wish, Mixed Up and Wild Mood Swings singles and their B-sides seem to be there. |
Excellent news! Now if only somebody can get a complete Siouxsie & the Banshees B-sides collection together...
|
Where is the song "Spilt Milk?" I think it was a B-side from Bloodflowers, but I'm not 100% sure. It might not have been released at all. Anyhow, it is a great song!
|
Cool - can't wait to get my hands on this!
|
This is awesome for the B-sides. The Rarities are not so hot. None of the best songsare included from the Concert: The Cure Live/Curiosity import cassete side 2, which contains some of the greatest Cure songs ever - All Mine, Forever, Heroin Face. And nothing from the Easy Cure/early days - See the Children, Meathook, Listen, Need Myself, I Want to Be Old. The missing song from the Boys Don't Cry CD (on the cassette, not on the CD) World War is still missing. At least Hey You(missing from Kiss Me3) is on there.
At least I can have some of my old favorites on a good source. |
The Cure is also releasing all of their albums with a bonus cd of tracks. I am wondering if all of the songs on the box set will also end up on these cd's. If so, I may have to hold off as I do not need them twice.
|
I went through all my b-sides and it looks like the only ones missing are Spilt Milk and I Dig You.
|
But Rich, does it have the tracks from side 2 of the Concert import cassette?

According to the earlier post, All Mine, Forever (2 of their best songs EVER and Heroin Face from the Curiosity (the actual title of side 2) are missing. The rest of side 2 included stuff like 10:15 and other material on the above post. I listed a bunch of rarities that are missing, but hopefully Robert will get these on the box set, or at least on one of the re-releases.
|
Nice.
I can't wait for this release. |
Mmmmm, my precious . . .
You will be mine! |
Well, I believe we'll get all the other missing stuff like, Early Demos, Carnage Visors, Curiousity rarities, Pirate Ship, Lost Wishes, Spilt Milk and Missing Flowers demos with the remastered rereleases of the cd catalog.
Also, Possession will be included in the box set. This is one of the b-sides from the Bloodflowers sessions. |
Originally posted by Jippy Excellent point. I still own the import cassette version of that simply for side 2. Once I discovered that material, I think I played it more than side 1. VERY cool stuff if you're a Cure fan. |
Not about the box set, but if you need a Robert Smith fix, he co-wrote and sings a song ("All of This") on Blink-182's new self-titled CD. It's not bad!
|
Yeah, Robert's been a busy bee. He's got the Blink-182 song, a song called "Perfect Blue Sky" with Junkie XL, "Believe" with Earl Slick, a remix of "A Forest" with Blank & Jones, a new version of "Pictures of Your" on the One Perfect Day soundtrack, a cover version of "Faith Healer" for an Alex Harvey tribute album and he did the vocals on a dance track called "Da Hype" for someone called Junior Jack.
|
joefrog, Is this Smith material? Or is it like the glove, you can tell he wrote it, but a casual fan would not know it is him (no or near no vocals)?
|
This is wonderful. Awesome, the Disintegration b-sides and the highly under-rated Bloodflowers (Possesion). I'm there
