Elliott Smith-DEAD :(

I'm a bit choked up right now and don't really know what to say. The man made some incredible music and will be badly missed. Rest in peace, Elliott, and know that many people you've never met are crying for you today.

I read this as soon as I woke up this morning and I was miserable. I'm actually working on a write-up for this website on what his music means to me and others. I'll link it once I post it. Until then, god damn.

Can't Make a sound
Elliott Smith
I have become a silent movie
The hero killed the clown
Can’t make a sound
Nobody knows what he’s doing
Still hanging around
Can’t make a sound
The slow motion moves me
The monologue means nothing to me
Bored in a role, but he can’t stop
Standing up to sit back down
And lose the one thing found
Spinning the world like a toy top
Till there’s a ghost in every town
Can’t make a sound
Eyes locked and shining
Can’t you tell me what’s happening?
Why should you want any other, when you’re a world within a world?

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

I've become a huge Elliott Smith fan (my freshman year roommate got me into him) and lately I've been listening to his albums a lot. In fact, I was listening to Waltz #1 on XO just as I read this news. Absolutely beautiful song btw. I'll miss you, Mr. Smith.

terrible news. he was a fantastic songwriter. imagine being able to combine the talents of lennon and mccartney, and he was it. just never made it to the mainstream, which was a blessing and disappointment.
at least we have his music, which i'll never stop listening to. hopefully we'll have something new over the next year or so, but just really depressing to know he's not around anymore.

I seriously can't say anything meaningful... don't think I can accurately put into words what a profound effect his music had on me. He was an amazing talent. Please if you've never heard his music pick up anything he recorded. His lyrics are so personal, his voice so haunting. I saw him perform earlier this year and it was a mixed bag. He was struggling.

I was too depressed to type a message yesterday about this. I was just listening to Figure 8 the day before I found out. Although many people would find his music too depressing, it actually helped me quite a bit to listen to his music when I was going through my divorce.

Seriously, I think this is the 1st death of a celebrity that has ever affected me. I just started to listen to his music too. There is just so much beauty in it, I completely connect with it. I guess we all have those musicians that speak right to us. Elliott is that one for me, and I am a very new fan. I have such mixed emotions about his music now. I love it, but listening to it makes me so sad and so happy. It can't believe this happened. I can listen to the music and it feels so alive, but he isn't. He will be missed forever, but atleast he can still spread some comfort and happiness through his music.

Elliott Smith: Still DEAD.
Seroiusly, though, I think officially it's still open, but basically nobody from the police is investigating it anymore because they've done what they can. Personally, having been a big fan of the work and read a lot about the man, I do think he killed himself, but I guess there's room for doubt officially. I think Spin magazine had a good article on the investigation a while back.

I recently got into downloading shows from Archive.org and there is this beyond words great acoustic show on February 20th, 2000 on there of Elliott. I don't hear many shows that are live that the artists voice sounds the same as on an album but Elliott Smith's voice is actually even more beautiful on this show. It is the best show I have ever heard of the greatest voice I have ever heard. He was marvelous and for those that want to download the show I highly recommend it.
