What song would take the most cajones to play in 2003?

I was reading one of my TheOnion book this other day and there was an article about a father who sang "Who Let the Dogs Out?" It got me thinking. In this year, what radio station would even have the balls to play that song and NOT have people drive straight off the road? The lite radio stations wouldn't touch it in the first place, the rock radio stations try to deny it existed, and the Top 40 that made it the hit it was made fun of it all they could. Now, there are annoying songs that still get play (Hello Smashmouth's All-Star!) but there has got to be some songs that no station director and/or DJ would EVER play again.

With that, I ask, which of these songs would take the most guts to play all the way through WITHOUT interruptions?

if you live in the york pa area, avoid 98.5, most of these songs are played at least once a week.

"Ice Ice Baby" occasionally gets airplay. It's kind of gotten a mini-comeback. I heard it was featured in Dumb & Dumberer which might account for that.

Sooner or later, all of these will be trotted out as camp nostalga, just like YMCA.

Yeah, I hate people that do that. Like people who drive around listening to Ah-Ha's "Take On Me". They are doing it just so they can say, "Look at me, I am listening to kitschy music. I am soooo ironic."

Man, that's tough. I'm going with Jump since I couldn't imagine anyone having any nostalgia ever for that one. Macarena and Who Let The Dogs Out will always get stadium play. I think Mmmm Bop is an okay song, actually (thanks exclusively to the Dust Bros). Achy Breaky Heart is just gawd-awful but someone made it a hit, right? I think there's more forgiveness in country music circles than hip-hop (that's why Billy Ray Cyrus has a weekly TV show and Kris Kross don't. Hammer has his own unique charms, but that song has already ended up on the huge garbage pile of silly novelty movie songs. They are easily forgotten. (Personally, I would have picked Bobby Brown's Ghostbuster song; that one was awfully silly as well).

I don't know about where you guys club, but 'Ice Ice Baby' and 'Jump' still get pretty decent club play during old-school sets.

Actually, I listen to Hunting High and Low (which "Take On Me" appears on) in my car. Why? Not to say look at me I'm listening to kitschy music, because when I'm listening to A-ha it's definitely not to draw any attention. Who would want broadcast this? (Not to mention I still listen to the admittedly horrible follow up Scoundrel Days.)

Who actually saw Dumb & Dumberer? "Ice Ice Baby" is a timeless classic and will be featured on Wayback Wednesdays for generations to come.

I like some of those songs, thanks. And "Who Let The Dogs Out" will always have nostalgic value of my trip to Ireland in 2000. If you like these songs, play them, and f**k the begrudgers.

This is not Zappa, mmmkay?

Humor definitely has a place in music.

Irony is anti-music.

If you listen to stuff you don't actually like, you need to pour a vial of mercury in your ear canal.

Not only do I listen to that song, but I also have a-Ha's latest album (Lifelines) and their excellent 2000 release Minor Earth Major Sky -- and right now I am listening to How Can I Sleep With Your Voice Live... and I'm not being ironic, a-ha is very good.

I listen to country radio, and I don't think I've heard a Dixie Chicks song on country radio since their "incident."

Believe it or not, I still hear some of those songs on the radio. My own choice isn't up there--Celine Dion's My Heart Will Go On. If I never hear that song again for the rest of my life then I will die a happy man.
