Pearl Jam Reels In 'Exclusive' Fish
As tipped here last month, the Sony Classical soundtrack for Tim Burton's upcoming film "Big Fish" will feature a new Pearl Jam song, "Man of the Hour." And while the album won't be released until Dec. 23, Billboard.com has learned Pearl Jam's official Web site will be the exclusive source for the track's commercial single.
Beginning Monday (Nov. 10), fans can pre-order the self-released single, which will include a full-band studio version as well as frontman Eddie Vedder's home demo. It will begin shipping Nov. 26 and sell for $5.
"Big Fish" stars Ewan McGregor, Albert Finney, Billy Crudup and Jessica Lange in a multi-generational tale of a father's relationship with his estranged son. The film opens Dec. 10 in New York in Los Angeles and Jan. 16 in wider release.
Burton has attended a number of Pearl Jam shows over the years, and the two entities seem to share a love for trying new approaches in their respective mediums. Burton's representatives recently screened the film for Pearl Jam's members, and the director asked if the group would be up for contributing an original song.
"Man of the Hour" was quickly written by Vedder (words and music), recorded at Studio X in Seattle and debuted live during an Oct. 22 acoustic benefit concert at the city's Benaroya Hall.
The acoustic-tinged track is accented by wistful slide guitar work, with lyrics reflecting how the father/son bond can be rocked by what seem like insurmountable obstacles: "tidal waves don't beg forgiveness / crash, then on their way / father, he enjoyed collisions / others walked away."
Tapped to run over the end title credits of the film, "Man of the Hour" is expected to go on-sale via digital download sites later this month. According to a spokesperson, the Pearl Jam site will sell "Man of the Hour" until mid-January. The track will most likely be available for streaming from as-yet-unannounced sites beginning next week.
The opportunity for Pearl Jam to sell the single (its first soundtrack contribution since 1998's "Chicago Cab") on its own stems from the band having recently fulfilled its long-term contract with Sony's Epic Records. No decision has yet been made about a new record deal, but sources indicate this may be a preview of how Pearl Jam plans to make new music available in the future.
The "Big Fish" soundtrack will be rounded out with Danny Elfman's score, plus songs from Bing Crosby, Buddy Holly, Elvis Presley, the Vogues, the Allman Brothers Band and Canned Heat. The cut "Twice the Love" is sung by actors Ada and Arlene Tai, who portray the characters Ping and Jing in the film.
Here is the "Big Fish" track list (order TBA):
"Man of the Hour," Pearl Jam
"Dinah," Bing Crosby
"Everyday," Buddy Holly
"All Shook Up," Elvis Presley
"Five O'Clock World," the Vogues
"Ramblin' Man," the Allman Brothers Band
"Let's Work Together," Canned Heat
"Twice the Love," Ping and Jing

More Man of the hour news
"Man of the Hour" - Read here for how it all came together.
[The beginning.]
Sept. 17 - Pearl Jam hears thru mutual acquaintance that Tim Burton would really like for them to pen a song for his movie, Big Fish.
Sept. 23 - The band loves Tim Burton's movies. Everyone is intrigued. In an uncommon occurrence, all five band members come together in the same city on the same day to see a screening of the movie arranged for them.
All five guys leave the movie, and go back to work or back to whatever they are working on. The movie and its stories continue to swim around in their heads.
That night, most of the band members call their fathers, father figures, and in some cases, mothers. [You'll get this when you see the show.]
Sept. 29-Oct.1 - A week later, Ed says he has an idea, and a few days later he hands over a demo version called "Man of the Hour" inspired by the film. The band loves it. Tim Burton loves it.
October 13-14 - They record it at Studio X in Seattle.
October 22 - They perform it for the first time to the sold out Benaroya Hall crowd (Seattle YouthCare benefit show)
[The end.]

Pearl Jam and Tim Burton, eh? Two of my favorite things together. Hopefully it'll be like chocolate and peanut butter, and not chocolate and chicken.
It does suck about Angel being cut from Lost Dogs. I love that song. On a side note, I got to hold both Lost Dogs and Live At The Garden in my hands a couple days ago, in our warehouse. Though, not at the same time. They're both housed in cardboard. The DVD slips out on the left side (odd, for some reason) and I'm guessing the inside has the first cover that was posted. I'm not sure though, as it was sealed. So, the real question is: Who wants to touch me? C'mon, don't all run up at once now!

Got the Lost Dogs Cd and Garden DVD in the mail today. Both very good. The DVD is great picture wise, much better than Touring Band 2K. Hunger Strike from the last Mexico is a hidden track on Disc 1.

In the CC ad, it lists the album as a 3-disc set - looked thru the forum pgs but didnt see any mention of it. Is this a bonus disc or something?
Also is the DVD video anamorphic widescreen?
Thanks

Although I haven't heard an official answer, I'd bet anything on the CC ad just being a misprint. Believe me, if there was a bonus CD to be offered anywhere, I'd know about it.
As for anamorphic, I don't have the DVD so I don't know, but since their last live DVD release (Showbox, Seattle) was anamorphic and it was a very small, fan club only release, I'd be absolutely shocked if this one isn't.

Where is Hunger Strike?
The DVD's are anamorphic. The 5.1 sound could be a bit better. Ed's voice is pumped through the front surrounds more than it is the center speaker, which I found odd. It will also "echo" in the rear surrounds, trying to reproduce the concert feel of his voice echoing through the venue. The video is better than the other live DVD's.
Two Best Buy's were sold out (they claim to have gotten 7 each), and I got the last one at Circuit City.

DVD Impressions.
Watched the first disc last night. Very impressed. Quality is much better than Touring Band. Anamorphic and the 5.1 is pretty decent where I didn't care for it on Touring Band and generally listen to the stereo track on that. Plus it has Black, the best song ever.
CD impressions:
Awesome as expected. Almost all the songs leave you saying, how the hell didn't that make it on to an album Especially when crap like Bugs, Heyfoxymophandlemommathat's me, privacy, and so on got on albums.

In case anyone is curious these are some of the changes the band made to song that were already released:
Sad: Lead and backing vocals change and remixed from the Leaked version of Letter To The Dead, it's original title. (since it wasn't "officially released anywhere, I guess this is it's "original" form)
Alone: Changed some vocals, different recording.
U: Added Harmonica/ harpsicord. changed some vocals.
Undone: Backing vocals and keyboards
Yellow Ledbetter: Doesn't fade out at the end.
Hard To Imagine: Some different vocals, different recording than Chicago Cab.
Footsteps: Added harmonica.
Wash: Different recording?
Drifting: New vocal track. Missing the the "Merry Christmas at the end.
Dirty Frank: Missing the "shaft" references and the parts at the vocals at the end. The music is there, just not the vocals. (not the "I think that's enough" part, the part where Eddie says "**** 'em just to see the look on their face, just to see the look on their face..." That part is missing because it's a Chili Pepper's reference.
Brother: No vocals, unlike the leaked version that came out yeas ago. makes it a better song in my mind. (since it wasn't "officially" released anywhere, I guess this is it's "original" form.)
About Hunger Strike on the DVD: in case you wanted to know or didn't know it's from the last Mexico show. (i'm not sure how you wouldn't know seeing Ed speak spanish at the beginning of it.)

4/20/02, the day Layne Stayley (lead singer of Alice in Chains) passed away. It's a tribute to him. More from earlier in the thread.

Vedder's Staley Tribute No Longer 'Lost'
A song Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder wrote about Alice In Chains frontman Layne Staley on the day of his death will be released on "Lost Dogs," the group's upcoming double-disc rarities collection. The track, dubbed "4/20/02," is not listed on the album but can be found several minutes after "Bee Girl," the last song on the set's second disc. "Lost Dogs" will be released Nov. 11 by Epic, the same day as the concert DVD "Live at the Garden."
"It was a real personal song [Vedder] wrote the night we all found out [Staley] died," Pearl Jam guitarist Stone Gossard told Billboard.com last year. "He stayed in there, didn't work on anything else, and worked this song up." Added guitarist Mike McCready, "he wrote it in the ukulele tuning, so it had this weird vibe to it, and it was sad."
In the song, Vedder lashes out at the singers of unnamed bands copying the style of Staley, who died after battling drug addiction for years. "So sing just like him, f***ers," Vedder sings. "It won't offend him / just me / because he's dead." The cut features only Vedder on vocals and guitar.
Because of its pointed lyrics and highly personal content, the track was ruled out for potential inclusion on Pearl Jam's 2002 album "Riot Act," according to Gossard. "The record overall has such a universal feel to it, much more so than some of our other records," he said. "Most of the songs are about bigger kinds of things. There was something about [the song] that felt like it maybe wasn't right for this particular record."
The rest of "Lost Dogs" is packed with surprises, such as alternate versions of the previously released B-sides and outtakes "Alone," "Wash" and "Hard To Imagine." Bassist Jeff Ament makes his Pearl Jam singing debut on "Sweet Lew," a nostalgic look back at NBA superstar Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, while Gossard takes the mic for the rocking "Don't Gimme No Lip."
