Classify Queens of the Stone Age...

Lemme preface this:

I'm mostly into underground hip hop (Mos Def, Kweli, The Roots [they used to be underground], etc...) and I don't listen to much 'rock' and I've never been a fan of 'punk'...

So, anyway...

Like many late Queens of the Stone Age converts, I first heard No One Knows and it wasn't anything that would make me run and buy an album, but it wasn't bad. But then a couple months later I saw the 'Go With the Flow' video and i was amazed... amazed at the video, and amazed at the song, and how perfectly the two matched.

That day I went out and bought 'Songs for the Deaf', and on first listen, I thought it was OK. Second listen, I loved it. And now it's one of my favourite CDs ever - it's been in my cd player since I got it, and I'm nowhere near sick of it. I don't skip any songs, and I can listen to it in any mood. I just love the damn album.

So anyway, I wanted to hear more of the similar, but I don't really know how to classify them. Metal? Sure, some of their songs are, but they're no Pantera. Punk? I wouldn't say so... I've always disliked punk for some reason. I do hear elements in a lot of their songs, but I wouldnt say they're a punk band. Hard rock? Maybe... I used to think hard rock and metal were pretty much the same, but I saw someone post that Metallica went from "metal to hard rock" on the black album.... So I guess there is a clear difference...

I see it just as rock'n'roll, i guess. They go from here to there, blending styles and eras, and I love it. But i find it odd because I cant find much else like them out there... any reccomendations?

Yes "Songs for the Deaf" is an awesome album. I don't like to classify bands too much into one category so I just call them a rock band, although josh homme prefers the term "stoner rock". I highly recommend their previous cd "Rated R" if you liked "Songs for the Deaf".

Yeah, I'm going to their concert and their set list has a lot of Rated R and a couple 'Queens of the Stone Age' songs on them... So I plan on getting 'R' and maybe their first (is it any good? I know they say they've matured even after SFTD in their songwriting... so I'm kinda weary about 'Queens...')

I know what you mean about classifying groups...it's usually useless and stupid (you listen to music for the music and its effect, not because it's this or that genre), but when you're just getting into a new type of music it's sometimes useful. Plus I've heard them being classified as a bunch of things - punk, metal, stoner rock (what is that?), and i was just wondering what people here thought, and if there were any other bands like them...

Thanks!

Get their 1st cd. Its not quite as good as Songs for the deaf but its easily better than Rated R imo.

Yeah, I'm not 100% sure what you'd say about this album other than it's GREAT rock music. Good enough description. They remind me of Urge Overkill a little bit. You might be able to find Urge's "Saturation" CD cheap on Ebay. It's 10 years old, but really cool.

Also check out the band Kyuss, because several of them ended up being in QOTSA. Actually, many people think they're better.

Thanks for the replies & suggestions. I'll be checking some of these out.

I downloaded a couple old kyuss songs, they were pretty good but it was kind of odd - it would be like 2 or 3 minutes of music, and then they'd finally start singing It was good music though...
