I like some of the older punk (Minor Threat, Television, Wire, Mission of Burma, a couple Crass songs here and there) but I like the variants of punk more - like post-punk and the (questionably titled) art-punk. Current ones that I like: Ex Models, Le Tigre, Q and Not U, Les Savy Fav, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Lot Six and Liars.

A question for anyone that knows the history of punk: a friend once told me that post-punk is a label for any punk band that formed after 1978-79. Is this true? I'd always considered it to be more of a style issue than a time issue.

Operation Ivy and the Mr. T Experience are really the only two punk bands I still listen to.

Post punk definitely occurred after the first wave of UK punk/new wave(76-79). Post punk bands as you know mixed elements of mainly British punk with other elements such as funk, goth,psych, industrial/Krautrock(NEU, Kraftwerk etc influences) and the glam artists such as Bowie, Roxy Music and Bolan/T Rex.

The bands run the gamut- the great Gang of Four funk punk(until the "I love a man in a uniform" fiasco) to Echo & the Bunnymen(many psych influences), A Certain Ratio(more funk), Early Cure,The Sound,Bauhaus,Joy Division, PIL, The Fall, Mission of Burma and the Proletariat to name but a few.

Technically, a band such as Cabaret Voltaire were post punk during the punk era but most of the identifiable bands were after the demise of British punk which was the year 1978. Most bands with any "punk" influence after 79 or 80 were called post punk(except for the early American hardcore bands of course which is a whole other great punk chapter)

If I have to pick one post punk record though difficult, I would pick Gang of Four- Entertainment with PIL's Second Edition and Mission of Burma's entire output(minus Max Ernst) on one Ryko CD release a close second. Its too hard to pick one. Hope this helps.

Yeah, see, Gang of Four has always been slapped with the "progenitor of post-punk" label even though they formed in 1979 (I believe?). That's why it led me to believe that it is more style-based than anything else.

Just for ****s and giggles: Gang of Four, Entertainment is probably the finest album that punk, post-punk, art-punk, dance-punk has ever seen.

As far as bands like Blink 182 go, they may not be punk in the true sense of the word, but at least thier not "Limp Bizkit", "Pink", or "98 Degrees". They write good catchy pop songs.

FM is currently my favorite band. And the best live show I've ever seen. They're working on their next album at the moment, but if anyone ever has the chance to see them play, definitely check 'em out!

sorry, but for all of you, what is generally consitered "punk" music. I always consitered it playing really fast, but thats emo right?
Also is there a misfits gh album or any one or two standout albums for me to get hooked on
also, I'm sort of looking for what is consitered punk at its prime (late 70's-early 80's) but mainly a best of collection

Rhino Records will release a four-disc punk box set, Ever Get the Feeling You've Been Cheated? The '70s Punk Rebellion, on October 28th. Following in the footsteps of the garage-rock anthology Nuggets, the set is designed to serve as a punk rock primer, spanning 1973 to 1980.
"I'm not doing this set for people who were there the first time or to 'give the kids a history lesson,'" says the collection's producer Gary Stewart. "I'm hoping that somebody new to rock & roll who just picked up albums by the White Stripes, Good Charlotte or Radiohead will find much to love here."

The 100-track compilation features songs from punk headliners like the Clash, the Ramones, Elvis Costello, the Pretenders and the Cure as well as outer-limits bands like Suicide, the Ruts and Mink DeVille -- but no song from the Sex Pistols, whose frontman Johnny Rotten gave the collection its title when he asked the audience the same question at the end of the band's 1978 farewell show.

"I wanted to turn people on to some of the great nooks and crannies of early punk," Stewart says. "If you're buying this set, you're probably aware of the Buzzcocks and the Ramones, but I want you to know about the Rezillos, the Rich Kids and the Heartbreakers."

"I wanted the listener to see how the artfulness of Patti Smith, and the pop revisionism of early Blondie, Nick Lowe and the Motors, and the humor of Ian Dury all came from the same place," Stewart continues, "and belong alongside the Ramones, the Clash and the more obvious practitioners."

There is the box set, which I need to save up and buy, that has everything with the exception of a couple (like 2 or 3 songs) that Glenn Danzig did. Do not waste your time on post-Danzig Misfits, they suck. If you do not want the box set there is Collection I & II, with collection I being self titled. These 2 will get you on your way to loving the Misfits and Glenn, there are some great songs not available on these though and this is where the box set is good, plus it comes in a coffin shaped box.
