Here's some of my faves:
Bad Religion Subhumans Quincy Punx Ramones The Gits DRI (more thrash metal really, but kinda punk) NOFX (older stuff) Op Ivy Black Flag (pre-Henry rollins is better but he's ok too) Aus Rotten Avail Bouncing Souls Propaghandi Saves the Day (more emo, but they rock hard tasty ass) Iggy and the Stooges and a bunch more.... good to see that there are some fellow punks on this board  |
Overall, I guess I prefer the old California punk (at least that's what I call it) from the late 70's/early 80's (my High School years) like Black Flag, Circle Jerks, Dead Kennedys, Fear, X. That's probably my favorite music.
I like a lot of New York bands (Talking Heads, Blondie, Ramones, New York Dolls) from around then too, but most of those (other than the Ramones and maybe New York Dolls or at least Johnny Thunders) don't seem to me to be punk, even if they sometimes get classified that way. I also like the Sex Pistols (yeah, I know, they suck, but I like em), the Clash is ok. My favorite group is probably the Fall, but I don't really know if they are "punk" or not--they sure are pissed, though. |
here we go (slaps black flag tat on arm):

Good thread, guys. Most of the bands that I grew up listening to have been listed: Misfits, Social D, DK, Bad Religion, Clash, etc.
I find the most of the current punk bands pretty weak, but it is cool when an older band gets out and does a tour. I saw the Damned and the Angry Samoans last summer, and it felt like I was 15 again. I used to go to shows every weekend, but as I get older, I find myself going out less. Anyway, here are some local punk bands that I find are pretty fun: The Gloryholes Cookie |

I used to go to CBGB's (and other NYC clubs) back in the mid-late 70's when you could see Patty Smith or Debby Harry hangin at the bar.
Groups I saw live then include: Patty Smith Ramones Dead Boys w/ Stiv Bators Richard Hell and the Void Oids Dictators (we used to call them the dick takers, but I don't remember why) Talking Heads Clash Television and probably some others I'm forgetting. |
A current PUNK band that is incredible is Dillinger Four. One of the best bands I've ever heard!
