Today's CDs (07/14/03)

Talking Heads - Remain In Light
Kasey Chambers - Barricades & Brickwalls
Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots
Grant Lee Buffalo - Mighty Joe Moon
Dixie Chicks - Wide Open Spaces
Marah - Kids In Philly
Old 97s - Satellite Rides

QOTD/W: In honor of the All-Star Game tomorrow night... if you were a baseball player, what music would you want the public address system to play as you walked to the plate?

I haven't thought about this at all, but one song that comes to mind (as I listen to the Talking Heads) is that "Burning Down The House" wouldn't be so bad, but I'd have to ponder this further.

I carried a lot of discs on my trip to see The New Pornographers in DC (who were really wonderful), but I mainly listened to these:

Les Savy Fav - Rome (written upside down)
!!! - Me and Giuliani Down By the School Yard (a true story)
Ex-Models - Zoo Psychology
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Fever to Tell
The Pixies - Doolittle

I had some others with me - Nina Simone, Belle and Sebastian, Enon, Broken Social Scene, etc. - but all of that is what I listened to the most.

QOTD: Hmm, I'm not so sure. Something really fun but anthemic like "Bone Machine" or "Mr Grieves" by The Pixies. It would be a hoot to walk out to the plate hearing Frank Black stutter, "Hope everything is alr-iii-ii--ight," and knowing all the fans are trying to figure out what the hell is going on.

Kings of Leon - Holy Roller Novocaine
Robert Walter's 20th Congress - Money Shot
Old 97's - Wreck Your Life
The Thorns
Herbie Hancock - Headhunters

AOTD: I'd have to think about it as well, but the first song to pop into my head was "Timebomb" by the Old 97's.

No music for me today, aside from my Calla mix and the Broken Social Scene disc (writing 900 words on them is a chore and a half). But for my entrance music, I'd pick Steppenwolf's "Magic Carpet Ride," no question.

Bright Eyes - Lifted... (my cousin exposed me to this last week)
Velvet Underground & Nico - s/t
Black Eyed Peas - Behind the Front
R.E.M. - Green
Badly Drawn Boy - Have You Fed the Fish?
Jimmy Buffett - Meet Me in Margaritaville

The song that jumped out at me when reading the question was "Scotland the Brave." Rowdy Roddy Piper had the best entrance music. Like everyone else, I'd have to give this some thought.

It also made me think of that episode of The Simpsons when Homer was a boxer and his entrance music was "Why Can't We Be Friends?" Hysterical.

This album has been slammed a bit on this forum, but it's one of my favorites of last year.

Really? I know I've heard the CD mentioned before here. What did people not like about it? Having not heard any of his previous stuff, I can't compare it to any of that. I do really like it, though. Wasn't sure if I would because my cousin's one of those emo kids.

He played it for me over vacation last week. I loved it and bought it as soon as I got back this weekend. Even paid a little more that I should've from Media Play because I needed the instant gratification.

It'll be for CityPages, the Minneapolis paper. It'll be online. It should run within the next two weeks (provided I write the damn thing).

I had slammed the Bright Eyes disc. Conor really really really needs to edit himself. The Everyday and Every Night EP is still the only worthwhile thing he's done.
