Who besides me in 1984 viewed The first song of the new MTV?
I amongst Roller Skating friends viewed this on MTV Music Television, over at Cathy's house.
The first video was called "Video Killed The Radio Star" by the one hit wonder The Bugles
Did you view this back 19 years in the last century by your self or with friends
or were old enough to allowed by your parents to watch the event. I taped it on VHS for I was the only one of our group that thought maybe Cathy didn't own a Hi-Fi Vcr.

Wonder how many people TRULY see the very first signals of a new station? I don't know if MTV took over another cable channel or started anew. Regardless, probably not many people were sitting in front of their TV waiting for it to start up.

Yup. I saw it. I'm showing my age here....just turned 40! Yikes!. I also remember heavy play of The J. Giles Band "Angel is a Centerfold" and The Go-Go's "Our Lips Are Sealed".
Ah....the halcyon days when MTV actually played music videos....

There's got to be a Steven Wright joke in here somewhere-maybe about the cable company procrastinating until 1984, or maybe he lived so far away that the signal took three years to reach his TV, something.

I am pretty sure it was probably for free for a while as long as you had a cable system that included the channels owned by MTVs parent company. They probably also advertised the new network.

Goodman and Hunter took a stab at naming a few of the channel's early "game-changer" videos.
"The first one, The Buggles," Hunter said, of "Video Killed the Radio Star." Goodman called Peter Gabriel's "Sledgehammer" "one of the greatest videos of all time," but insisted Michael Jackson's "Thriller" was the video to remember above all.
Lauer also played a little word association with the VJs, looking for recollections on the biggest music stars of the early 1980s.
Madonna? "Fleshy," is how Hunter described the Material Girl.
Frank Zappa? "He was very condescending to me," Blackwood said of an interview gone bad.
Cyndi Lauper? "Huge talent, and made a mistake with the wrestling thing," Goodman said.
David Lee Roth? "He sums up the '80s completely, his over-the-top personality," Quinn said. "The hair was bigger, shoulders wider and the spandex was tighter."
Michael Jackson? "That's the game-changer," they all agreed.

Re: Who besides me in 1984 viewed The first song of the new MTV?
At the time, our cable provider didn't get MTV unil two years after it debuted, so no. I remember we moved to another town that did have it, and all my friends who still didn't have it yet would all come over to my house to watch it for hours on end. Back then, very per Internet age, that's what kids did to find out about new music/bands. And it was actually good then, too.

I was fortunate enough to see it because I was in New York City. In my memory, it sure seemed like a big deal to me and even the adults gathered around to watch. Maybe also because, despite living in a large suburb of Detroit, we didn't have cable in our city yet. I'd never seen HBO before either and recall most people called it Home Box Office. They also had that cool opening before movies where the camera seemed to fly through a town. The controls for cable was a large box and it was connected to something else and not wireless, like a remote control.
I remember, in high school, at many Friday night parties, instead of having a stereo blaring, the TV would be set to MTV and playing the top 20 countdown. When I went to college all the way in California people did the same thing. Not much else was the same about California and Michigan. Anyway, now I think I only see videos on YouTube.

Those were the days thought I did not get into MTV until Adam Curry, Kevin Seal, and those guys came in the late 80's.
Now even if they did show videos they probably would not hire VJs anymore.

We actually didn't get MTV in our cable system until 1984. Before that I had to settle for TBS's Night Tracks, USA's Night Flight, and NBC's Friday Night Videos to get my fix. I remember Madonna's "Like a Virgin" was THE fresh new track when we finally got MTV.
