auntiewinnie: Check Deep Discount CD; they carry the new CD for $13.29 shipped. I haven't seen a better price online, and that's a lot better than the handful of local stores that stock the disc.

MrN 06-20-03 02:47 PM

You guys talked me into it

I just found Utopia Parkway for $1.99 at BMG (with tax and shipping comes to $5 or so).

And I heard Stacy's Mom on the radio yesterday.

I grabbed this one too. I wonder if it was an error....

MrN 06-22-03 11:18 AM

They have it listed under their clearance section (along with a Spinal Tap CD), so not an error.

KevinSmithIsGod 06-22-03 12:19 PM

After hearing rave reviews and many people talking non stop about this cd, I decided to pick it up and give it a try.

There are a few good songs..but the majority of the cd I found boring and nothing too special..

Jeraden 06-25-03 07:33 PM

I've been listening to this CD non stop for the past week during my daily commute. My first couple listens I wasn't really all that impressed but its really grown on me after that. Overall I think its a bit stronger than their previous albums - it isn't as over-the-top cheesy as some of their earlier stuff. There is still plenty of cheesiness present, but they don't go quite as overboard with it, which gives it a bit more longevity. Some of the songs on the other albums were mega-catchy, but they were so corny you'd get kind of sick of them after a while.

I like the way they take totally mundane topics and create engaging music out of them. Like the Halley's Waitress song, while its not the most exciting song on the album, I love the way they totally dramatize the event and make it sound so serious.

The way they mix up the song styles also keeps it interesting. You have the slow ballad type songs (Halley's Waitress, Hackensack), the hard-rock type songs, the countryish song, and then the classic Fountains of Wayne sound.

Its hard to pick a favorite song as they are all really good. I'd say Julie right now would be the one I enjoy the most. Great album, I expect to keep listening to it for another week before I start mixing some other albums back in.

LiquidSky 07-08-03 07:29 AM

I saw them July 5th! They sounded great and put on a cool show.

Stoolie 07-09-03 02:09 PM

I finally found this album and it fits right in with their first two. Just fun to listen to.

To me the thing that stops me from taking this band seriously are their They Might Be Giants style vocals. Any band that has those kind of goofy vocals are hard for me to put on the top shelf.

What's goofy about the vocals? Although I'm an ardent They Might Be Giants fan, I don't notice much of any similarity in the vocals between bands aside from the fact that both bands vibrate two pairs of strong connective tissue bands stretched across the larynx to produce audible sounds. Both bands have a moderately similar approach to lyrics at times, and the occasional intermingling of layers of synths, distorted guitars, and vocal harmonies could be used as a point of comparison, but "goofy vocals"? You said you can't take the band seriously, but I don't think Fountains of Wayne are striving to be taken all that seriously.

slop101 07-10-03 09:21 AM

I also don't think that their vocals are all too different from, say, the Beatles, the Kinks or Weezer - unless you think they are goofy also.

Grimfarrow 07-10-03 09:58 AM

I *really* like the lyrics in "Haley's Waitress". Incredibly clever, sarcastic, and hilarious! How often does Haley's comet come around? Well, apparently as often as the waitress!

Another favorite is "Fire Island", which is a perfect nostalgia song of the recklessness of youth, filled with the cheekiest lyrics around.

Then there's "All Kinds of Time", the song in which a quarterback smugly (but understandably) ponders his beautiful life and future mid-game as he goes for an easy victory.

Gosh, there's just so much more. How about the opening lines of "Mexican Wine"? It totally reminds me of "The Big Lebowski"!

Buford T Pusser 07-10-03 09:16 PM

FYI-if you're in NJ the band will be doing an in-store concert at Vintage Vinyl in Fords. I was there the other day and saw the flier. Sadly I will not be in the area.

Buford T Pusser 07-10-03 09:21 PM

I was just flipping through the new Stuff magazine (with Brooke Burke on the cover -other-) and they make it their cd of the month with a five star rating.

JaxComet 07-10-03 11:52 PM

Best album of the year....period......

illennium 07-13-03 11:58 PM

If by "best album of the year" you mean "third best album released that day," then I wholeheartedly agree.

LiquidSky 07-14-03 07:37 AM

Jax....I agree. It's definitley one of the best so far.....

Very cool/funny video.

Since it isn't teen pop, teen boy Green Day ripoffs, rap or obnoxious "nu metal", will those silly twats at MTV play it? I never did see the video for The Donnas "Who Invited You?"

I saw it on MTV 2 on Tuesday night.....

Fountains Of Wayne "Stacy's Mom"

So....for some oddball reason [probably laziness] I have MTV on the other nite [in the background]. This song comes on. Sounds like an 80s song. It catches my attention.

The video is about a kid who hangs out with a classmate [who would be cute if she was legal] with a H O T mother.

Didn't recognize her at first, but it's Rachel Hunter.

Never really paid attention to her before [More of a Cindy Crawford kinda guy..], but damn -eek- she definitely looks like the ultimate MILF.

In the video, the group pays homage to Van Halen's "Hot For Teacher" [Rachel in the black outfit] in addition to Phoebe's scene in "Fast Times At Ridgemont High"[Take a guess which scene..] [though, seeing the kid mimic Judge's character's actions was kinda disturbing...though it was implied mimicry..]

Figured you'd need some proof, so here it is:<center>

Buford T Pusser 07-28-03 08:40 AM

Was this on regular MTV? I'm not sure when that channel or VH1 actually plays vids. I'd love to see any Fountains of Wayne vids and this one looks like it goes to the top of the list.

Adam Tyner 07-28-03 11:41 AM

THANKS!

slop101 07-29-03 04:23 PM

Give those make up artists and camera lenses an award, because I've run into Rachel Hunter before and she looked REALLY haggard - nothing like in those pics.

Fountains of Wayne will be performing tonight on David Letterman.....

Thanks for the info. Just saw them seconds ago and they sounded great. I was not happy when I forgot last week. Glad to hear it was changed.

slop101 07-31-03 09:44 AM

BTW, I saw FOW at the HOB, Anaheim Monday night and they were great - they were also obviously very tired, as it was the last show of their tour and it showed. But they still rocked and put on a hell of a tight show.

LiquidSky 08-01-03 07:45 AM

I saw them in Nashville a few weeks ago.....excellent show!
