Can a female artist be successful with the teen crowd if they aren't totally hot?

Now, first I have almost zero knowledge of today's teeny-bopper scene, so I'm truthfully looking for answers here.

Are there any female artists who are accepted by the younger crowd who are not totally hot, or act like they are totally hot? I'm talking about the Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Pink variety. I've seen recent threads about Jewel and Liz Phair going all skank in order to appeal to the youth market.

Also, I'm not talking about Adult Oriented Rock (AOR) types which may crossover into pop for a song or two (Sheryl Crow, etc.). I'm talking about artists/singers who are directly marketing to teens. Can they do it and not be an 8 or above on the hot-or-not chart?

Bottom line: Can a woman sell records to a 16 year-old without showing her midriff and cleavage?

Kelly Clarkson is about as attractive as my neighbor's Great Dane, but she seems fairly popular. She doesn't dress very trashy either.

I think I'll have to disqualify KC:

Looks pretty hot to me, in the teen marketing sense.

No. And they can't be successful with mid-30's men either unless they are hot.

I've never found Mandy Moore attractive on any level.

Ok, everyone will have intervening personal taste issues, but surely you must agree that Ms. Moore fits my original description.

Judgment: Disqualified

Vanessa Carlton is more than qualified by her weird speaking voice alone.

Hmmm...that's a possible candidate, although from the few things I've seen, she's been undergoing a serious makeover in order to become "hot", thereby more marketable.

I'm sure this won't count, but what about Tori Amos? I consider her a rather average looking woman, and I think most of her fanbase is composed of teens (that could easily be wrong, though).

How about Pink?

This one is a tough call though....at times she looks good, at other times she doesnt..
When it comes down to it though,IMO, she really doesnt have the most attractive face....sorry if i sound harsh!

You may not remember, but Tori started out as an '80s hair band pop queen before she realized that no one was buying it (literally - the album sold 7,000 copies) and switched over to her adult-oriented mood music. Check this out from her first album Y Kant Tori Read:

I saw the video the other day for the single off this album, "The Big Picture"...so incredibly cheesy I had to record it.

She is the exact reason I included the qualifier "or act like they are totally hot". You have to agree, though, that she is clearly marketed as "hot" alongside Britney, Christina, etc.

I seriously wonder if Chrissie Hynde would make it in today's pop market.

I think Tori Amos' fan base is older than teens.

The stereotype I had in mind for Tori fans was high school and college girls: late teens / early 20s.

BTW, I roomed with a guy (!) who was a Tori fan one year and gained an appreciation for some of her songs like "Crucify" and "Spark" - even though they're far removed from the style of music I usually listen to.

And, yes, I'm unfortunately aware of Y Kant Tori Read?
