The Pretenders first album (classic!). And only their most recent one (out late last Fall) comes close.

Curve's "Doppelganger" (although "Come Clean" comes real close to being their best).

Another vote here for NIN.

Garbage.

The Breeders - The Pod
Ween - GodWeenSatan:The Oneness
Television - Marquee Moon
New York Dolls - s/t

Keep in mind that I love the other albums released by these groups, I just feel that their first are the the best.

Will also wholeheartedly support GnR's A4D as their only good record.

Arguably, The Clash. Inarguably, the Sex Pistols...

Pretenders
The Doors
Led Zeppelin
Devo
Stone Roses
Warren Zevon
Joe Jackson
The Cure (in MY opinion)
REM
Psychedelic Furs (maybe)
Suede
The Jesus and Mary Chain

Gang of Four- Entertainment! Easily the best first album I can think of.

Fugazi- Repeater (or 13 Songs if you count the 2 eps combined as their first album. Both are classics).

I could think of more, but these stand out the most for me.

No question. This is without a doubt the strongest first album ever.

Great choice! It was all downhill from there for Gang of Four. Solid Gold had a few good songs but Entertainment! was by far and away their best (and an instant classic.)

agreed with GNR, but if they had released Use Your Illusion as a single disc (then maybe released the rest of the songs as a B side album later on), I think it would have been a stronger album than Appetite..

although the single disc 1998 release

is not the best combination of the two albums.

Pretenders and Gang of Four absolutely. I remember when a compilation was released on CD for Gang of Four and I refused to buy it... and I was dying for some of their music on CD. I waited patiently for the real deal (first album).

Oh, absolutely. I made a similar statement a few weeks ago in another forum:

The Illusion albums, you know, they had their moments, but ultimately, by releasing thirty songs over two albums, they wound up with a lot more filler than they should have had. Could you imagine if they whittled down those albums, and released them as one instead? Holy geez, that might have rivaled Appetite.
although the single disc 1998 release is not the best combination of the two albums.
Agreed on that as well--although I believe that the best of album was more of a way to get Use Your Illusion into stores like K-Mart (where I first saw it), and not as a true "Best of Use Your Illusion" disc. It's more of a mix of the cleanest UYI songs than anything else, IIRC.

i totally agree with you about Korn.

but i definitely feel that "Around the Fur" and "White Pony" were stellar efforts, and much better all-around records than "Adrenaline.

IMHO- (But they are arguable)

Jane's Addiction: Nothing's Shocking. (if you don't count the self titled Indy label E.P.) Ritual de lo Habitual is great, though.

Ramones self titled debut (Although, one could argue Rocket to Russia)

I think several of the selections in this thread have ignored early releases, which is OK. Debut EPs are glorified Demos. No one can really count Alanis Moressette's Pop (tiffani-esque) Canadian albums.
