Jewel: What the heck happened?

DId anyone check out TRL on Friday? I normally don't watch it, but I was flipping through the channels Friday and saw that Jewel was premeiring a new video. I can't stand her, but she said that she went in a new direction, so I thought what the heck...

Oh my word. She went teen pop! I think the video was suppost to be a spoof, but she was dressed like a modern-day teen star, complete with dancers, Britney Spears-esque outfits, etc...

She planned to go electronica according to the link below, but I was certainly surprised by this direction.
http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/147...wel_pop_.jhtml

(And no, I don't have any links to a video or pics, I could not find any on MTV yet)

rfduncan 05-03-03 01:52 PM

I think someone got really sick of her "whiny" music and konked her on the head with her own guitar. When she regained consciousness she thought she was Christina Aguilera. :D

mcbg1 05-03-03 03:46 PM

I think you didn't quite get the point of the video and of the song.

She's accusing current pop stars of only wanting money, not expressing art, and the fact that they are used to sell products.

That's why in the videos she's dancing, whored-up and shown endorsing products,etc....

mcbg1 05-03-03 03:48 PM

if you want to see the 'intuition' music video, go there :

http://launch.yahoo.com/musicvideos/

Listen to the lyrics and pay attention to the details in the video and you'll get how she's making fun of today's music industry.

Love the song and the video with her making fun. I laughed out loud when the video crawler went by that said "Jewel's music sounds so much better now that she's dancing!" Great stuff!

yeah the video is hilarious. She was on TRL and one audience member asked her why there was a TRL skit in it and Jewel just kinda laughed because none of these kids got that TRL promotes such crappy music. it's kinda like those people who think she sold out by hearing 'intuition' lol. They just can't think a little bit about what they're listening to....

HotThang 05-03-03 06:37 PM

And the sad thing about it is that this will probably be her highest selling album!

It's funny because it's true.

RoQuEr 05-03-03 07:38 PM

Well, blink 182s parody of pop turned them into pop stars, and MTVs faux pop group 2gether is making albums as well.

It is amazing to me how someone could not know that this song is a meant to be a parody.

Man...she totally made her point with the song.

Da Thrilla 05-03-03 11:16 PM

:D

Celtic Bob 05-04-03 08:10 AM

She looks good as usual but that song is complete and utter crap. Hopefully the rest of the disc isn't like that.

DGibFen 05-04-03 08:57 AM

I thought that was the idea. Unfortunatly for Jewel, the entire TRL audience didn't get the idea that it was a complete spoof.

I should have mentioned that I only caught the last half of the video when I first saw it, so I missed some of the parody.

Oh well, if she's playing a huge joke, it's an interesting one.

Matt 05-04-03 10:24 AM

Here's a similar thread about the new direction Jewel is taking:

I really enjoyed Jewel's first two albums "Pieces of You" and "Spirit", both fantastic albums.

But all the stuff she did after that, is too pop for me.

I don't like Jewel anymore.

Next thing you know, she'll be fitting in with Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, Pink and all those overrated skanky pop stars.

It seems like everybody is getting into the pop-heavy make-up around the eyes-straight hair-tight clothing showing your midriff look. After Jessica Simpson's second CD came out, man did I thought she looked liked Britney Spears. And after Jewels 3rd CD, boy did she look different! Everybody is trying for that look.

And for her new video, if it's a parody of the pop world, then I have got to tape it and pay attention to it.

Hollowgen 05-04-03 03:38 PM

the message and video are humorous, but that song is rubbish. i thought it was shakira at first.

Lateralus42 05-04-03 06:13 PM

Jewel is still Jewel, there is no 'new' look. It was an inspired video, one of the best i have seen lately ( that isnt saying much though, there is so much crap on MTV)

Doubt it, her first album sold more than 11 million copies.

Haha I agree but....

This morning I heard her song and when I went into the living room to watch the video... it was a TV commerial... for an Intuition Lady Shaver! Maybe the song isn't THAT much of a parody after all! :)

That's ok... I still like the song and video!

There's a couple versions of the crawl- not as funny, but same concept.
Something like, "This sexy dancing is shamelessly making me stay tuned. I Love it!"

Check out the lyrics to "America", a new song from 0304. If this gets released as a single we might see some Jewel "backlash."
;-)

Welcome to the corner of mainstreet USA
Look at the good people, hear what they gotta say
Uh-huh. Alright.
See a sexy girl with her long black hair
See a preacher man sportin' Abercrombie wear
Uh-huh. Alright
Walk into a corner store
Man says, this is what I'm fighting for?

We are living in America
We're giving in America
We're tripping in America

Everywhere I go seems like Bush is on tv
"We shed blood in the name of liberty"
Uh-huh. Alright.
The circus tents are dead but the sideshows doing well
The Osbournes, Anna Nicole are too freaky to tell
Uh-huh. Alright.
Take the bad with the good
I wanna change it but I wouldn't leave it if I could

We are trying in America
We're spying in America
Getting high in America
We are laughing in America
We're crying in America
We're dying in America

We are trucking in America
We are ****ing in America
We are lucky in America
We are breaking ground in America
Just another town in America
We are breaking down in America

Take the bad with the good
I wanna change it but I wouldn't leave it if i could

We are living in America
We're giving in America
We're tripping in America
We are trying in America
We're spying in America
We're getting high in America
We are getting tanned in America
We love spam in America
So let's disband from America
From being served in America (?)
Have you heard in America
We're crying in America
We're laughing in America
We're living in America.

wow.

I have to say I agree with the recently suspended Rocky_Stallone -eek-

I just finished listening to 0304 and it's indistinguishable from any of today's [or yesterday's] "pop" music. Of course, this is the first impression. I had planned to listen to it again, but I have this urge to go buy a Schick razor all of a sudden...:hscratch:

Oh wait...irony. Got it.

slop101 06-02-03 02:50 PM

...or me shopping for a Schick Intuition Shaver?

...whatever of..?

I just created a custom radio station there, and won't worry about repeat songs (I picked many different artists)

What a coinencedent that the product of the same name as Jewel's single came out at the sametime the single came out.

Yep...more of that "artistic integrity". ;)

Rypro 525 06-02-03 11:45 PM

what the hell is this? Crappy lyrics and a teen pop feel. (listeining to it now on yahoo radio. I prefer the folk singer.

Kal-El 06-03-03 12:48 AM

I don't know what happened, but I like it!

palebluedot 06-03-03 07:50 AM

Well...I just finished listening to this whole album as well and I must say it's terrible. It is one monotonous song after another. She has abondoned her acoustic guitar and natural sound for soul-less electronic drums and cheesy sound effects. This album sounds a LOT like Robyn's first album! The songs don't seem very personal and it leaves you cold after listening to it. It's too bad because I am a big fan of her other albums...oh well...another one bites the dust.
