The Microphones - "Mt. Eerie" and "The Glow, pt. 2"
Ted Leo and the Pharmacists - "Hearts of Oak"
The Pixies - "Surfer Rosa"
Pavement - "Slanted and Enchanted"

[rant]I'm also trying to dig through this pile of cds to review. I just finished Birddog - "Songs from Willipa Bay" and remain underwhelmed to say the least. I'm really starting to hate the college radio, but I can't figure out if it is because I only get the stuff the Music Director doesn't want to review (note: everything that isbad, with a few exceptions) or if there is just a lot of really terrible music funneled through colleges. It is probably a combination of both.[/rant]

Uncle Tupelo - Anodyne (non-remastered)
Oasis - Definitely Maybe
Joshua Bell & Edgar Meyer - Short Trip Home
R.E.M. - Eponymous
Michael Penn - March

Listened to Anodyne for the first time ever, believe it or not. (Though I have a vague memory of Rev105 in Minneapolis playing "The Long Cut" when they announced UT was breaking up.) Really enjoyed it, of course, though I definitely preferred the uptempo songs sung by Tweedy that I assumed were more "his" songs.

Sea and Cake - "Glass" EP
Nick Drake - "Pink Moon"
Drive Like Jehu - "Yank Crime"

In response to whoever asked in the last "Today's CDs" thread, the new Califone is quite possibly their best work. My internet was down for a few days, but everything seems to be a-ok now.

I saw 90 Day Men and The Sea and Cake on Friday. Both had great sets. I never realized that the super friendly employee of my favorite club in Chicago (The Empty Bottle) happens to be their bassist.

Today I'm listening to the new Jessica Andrews record, which I really like, surprisingly.

I just wanted to suggest that folks pick up the A.R.E. Weapons record today while they're off to get the White Stripes or whatever the other big releases are this week. The A.R.E. Weapons are a NYC trio who somehow combine Andrew WK and Suicide. Sometimes hair metal, sometimes electro, sometimes synth-pop. It's easily my fave record of the year, and I want to spread the word...

Go figure how A.R.E. Weapons wound up being the opener band for the Pet Shop Boys at a couple of London dates last spring, that in itself warrants a look see.

okay, so I did purchase the album last yesterday afternoon. It kind of reminded me of the group Giant Robot and a grungier stripped down DIY incarnation of the Lo Fidelity Allstars (their first album, the last album is crap). Kind of short running at 37minutes, though - I like it.

My two favorite songs are the first and the last ones. You can read my review of the album here, should you feel inclined.

I just made a war songs compilation. I call it War Follies.

Here's the playlist:

Enola Gay (extended version with newsreel voice explaining about "Little Boy" and how it exploded over Hiroshima, and another voice lamenting about killing everything) - Orchestral Manoevers in the Dark
So Many People - Hubert Kah (extended version with voiceover on various conflicts that occurred in the 70's and 80s)
Fields of Fire - Big Country
1916 - Motorhead
Invisible Sun - The Police
Camouflage - Stan Ridgeway (a sort of storytelling song about a Marine in Vietnam)
19 - Paul Hardcastle
Generals and Majors - XTC
Two Tribes - Frankie Goes to Hollywood
Def Con One - Pop Will Eat Itself
Party At Ground Zero - Fishbone
World Destruction - Time Zone
Killing An Arab - The Cure
Our Dreams - Anything Box (I decided to end on a hopeful note)

Of course there are soundbites from our friend R. Lee Ermey in Full Metal Jacket, Robin Williams in Good Morning Vietnam, something from Wargames, and James Earl Jones (I think from All The President's Men - I just took the .wav from some movie site).

I cannot stand the ARE Weapons record.

I think I understand the appeal. (After all, I am just old enough to remember Sigue Sigue Sputnik and the creepy/cuddly appeal of Iron Maiden's Eddie.)

Wish I had time to play point-counterpoint with Yancey.

I don't think he's too high on them, but he was the one that suggested we go (I was already going, so I said sure).

I'd love to hear your objections to ARE Weapons and my piece. (and remember that I once hated them too, "A.R.E. Weapons are Suicide + the Spa guest list," Chuck quoted me as saying in the Voice) Email it to me or post it here or at ILM...
