I love 'you're gonna miss me...' from High Fidelity. Are there any bands you would recommend that have that similar late 60s rock? Would the animals be similar?

They have some great stuff. Over the years, I've been on the hunt for any 13th Floor Elevators LPs - nearly impossible to find.

I love their version of 'Gloria'.

Similar to The Velvet Underground and MC5 as stated above.

The Standells

Check out the "Nuggets" Box Sets from Rhino. It's chock full of garage rock madness from that era.

No really.....seriously....

Go buy both box sets of the "Nuggets". You'll not cease spinning them for at least 6 months.

Alas, speaking of hearing it on a movie soundtrack....

The Creation (whom also grace the 2nd volume of Nuggets)

If you'd like to hear a garage-rock sound applied to soul and funk (believe me you do), check out the Chains & Black Exhaust compilation. There's a review of it up at Neumu.com today.

You could check out Rory Erickson's solo stuff. He was in the band. You could also check out the United States of Americana, the Monks, the Seeds, the Red Krayola, or few new artists, you should check out both of the Gris Gris records headed by Greg Ashley. Both of their albums, the self titled one and the latest "For the Season" push the boundries of where garage rock should go.

There is actually 3 Nuggets boxsets with the 3rd being called, "Children of Nuggets" and it hits the late 70's to early 90's garage wave even though they could have documented more of the Northwestern or Memphis garagepunk scenes. They have too many boring Voxx like garage bands in it.
