Punk?
Rock?
Alternative?

I'm having a problem deciding how to describe the music..

College rock or post-punk, mainly.

The ultimate college rock band. They even did a song about the University of Massachusetts ("it's educational").

Banal as the term has become, "Alternative rock" is probably still the best label.

When they were still together "Alternative" was the phrase.

Now? I would describe them as "still more relevent and talented than most of the dreck out there currently"

How is it a threadcrap? He asked "If you had to classify the Pixies, what would youc all them?" My legitimate answer is, like Snowmaker, crap.

I was unaware that the classification had to be positive.

"type of music" and "your opinion/eview" are entirely different questions

my answer: i'd classify The Pixies as "a group I've never heard of"

I'd call them alternative back when alternative was really alternative. Now Creed is considered alternative.

Funny, that happens to be Jason's favorite band.

allmusic classifies them as college rock or alternative rock. i'm hesitant to describe them to people as college rock, because these days that makes me think of stuff like dave matthews. post-punk is a fairly good one. pre-grunge alternative is another one i think is fairly accurate.

a good way to give people an idea of what they sound like is to mention that the song at the end of fight club is a pixies song. most people who think they haven't heard the pixies have seen fight club and will remember that song. just a thought if you're ever trying to describe them to someone again.
