new OLP CD
 

just picked this one up on a whim while at CC since it was $9.99, and i must say, it was the best 10 bucks i have spent in awhile. although they seem to be getting a little softer and more mainstream with each consecutive album, i still enjoyed this one. maida's voice is still just as mesmerizing as usual and the lyrics on some of the songs make you go hmmm. only downside is there are only 10 songs, but there is only one song on the entire cd i dont absolutely love. a big improvement over their
over-hyped spiritual machines cd. anyone else have this cd? curious to see if anyone else agrees with me. if you are an our lady peace fan, i highly suggest shelling 10 bucks and going get this one.

What's the title of this? Is it the one with Somewhere Out There on it?

i totally agree. it's definitely their best to date (in my opinion).
naveed was a little rough, clumsy was very good, happiness... is also definitely worth listening to & spitritual machines was ok.

I think the songwriting is better than ever & the bob rock production is awsome.

"made of steel" should be a single.

I might have to pick this up then. I've seen them about 3 times now(once opening for stones, twice at a "rockathon") and have always loved their singles and appreciated their albums. Clumsy is my fav by far, but maybe it switch soon....

I got it, loved it, then went off it a bit, but now think it's great again. I still prefer Spiritual Machines though.

I'd love to see them live but unfortunately they are practically unknown here in the UK (Scotland to be precise). They also suffer from the terrible affliction of thinking that playing London is the same as playing the UK. Oh well, I can but hope. Maybe the new album will get some publicity over here. They are a great band.

hmm, if you like spiritual machines the best, you may not like htis one so much. to me, spiritual machines was just some voice over gobblety gook with the same music, just at differnt rhythms and speeds. i didnt get the whole "it is the best album ever" and "groundbreaking" quotes i heard about it. but hey, they DO rule live :) just to rub it in although they dont make it to texas too often :( either.

btw, clumsy is my fav album as well, then happiness, then naveed. i think gravity may be pushing clumsy out of first place or at least they are a tie :)

Wow, this is the biggest disappointment of an album ever in my opinion. Happiness... and Spiritual Machines were both amazing (Naveed and Clumsy were both very good). This cd sounds like OLP selling out for the pop crowd. Their lead guitarist actually quit because he didn't like the pop direction. I hope they return to their old form or i wont buy anything else they release.

I am shocked. I am a huge OLP fan, and I completely agree with Ben Folds. This album sounds nothing like what I think their "real" sound is: Clumsy, Happiness, and Spiritual Machines. I think these are all great albums, and the way he sings and uses his vocal range is one of the best parts. He just doesn't do that in songs like Somewhere Out There. Gravity sounds like most of the other stuff out there today while there other albums were unique, and they had a much cooler sound. I know a lot of fans that would back me up on this. I heard that they got frustrated that their other stuff wasn't doing better, so they came out with Gravity to show they could rock and be more mainstream. It's a huge disappointment in my mind.

I don't think they sold out. all of their albums went multi-platinum in canada. True, the sound of gravity is more commercial than spiritual machines, but (in my opinion) so is the sound of every other of their albums. I dont think that has to be a bad thing in general, as long as the songwriting is still great. Which I think is on Gravity. If Gravity will be a huge worldwide success, good for them, they deserved it for years. In a perfect world, more bands like OLP would rule the charts.

BTW: whatever ans ever amen is one HELL of an album.

I agree with some of your points custom, but not that their other albums are commercial sounding. They have a distinct sound unlike a lot of the commercial bands, and I just think Gravity was going away from that sound to try and sound more commercial. Didn't anyone not like the fact that he didn't sing really high on Gravity like he did on Happiness and Spiritual Machines ? He sounded like every other singer out there when he used to be one of the best and different singers around.

ok, not all of their albums, but at least clumsy ("Superman's dead", "Clumsy") and happiness... ("one man army", "Is anybody home") sound more commercial to me than spiritual machines, which was, i think, their "concept album" (i hate that word). True, Raine Maida doesn't pitch his voice that much anymore on gravity, but it still sounds distinctive to me. plus, their songwriting is still typically OLP, which in my opinion, still makes them unique. Nevertheless, it's definitely their most commercial album to date.

they're totally awesome (as is potato girl)! but they both sound more commercial than most of the stuff on spiritual machines, don't you think? SM is a a really great album, still one of their least commercial, i think. It's an album to listen to, while gravity is better for the car stereo!

I agree that Spiritual Machines is the least commercial of their albums, but I hope you realize that One Man Army and Is Anybody Home are on Happiness, which is an extremely solid album. Although this album would probably appeal more to the general public than Spiritual Machines, it is still far from being commerical, and sadly wasnt a huge success.

Hey custom001, way to go just naming the singles when referring to the most commercial-sounding songs.

yes, i agree that gravity is a bit more mainstream--i stated that in my original post. however, i still dont think they have reached sell out proportion yet. yes, i wish maida would use more of his vocal range (he hints at it in do you like it) but i still think the traits of OLP are there--good song writing, songs that sound different (that is a big clue for selling out--when they whole album sounds the same), and just the music in general. yes, spiritual machines was the least rendy/mainstream of all of them but i really didnt like it much. i cant really describe why--perhaps because it was too hyped up--but it left me going, eh, alright. i think the reason OLP seems like they are going more mainstream is because we are hearing more of their stuff on the radio. awhile back, you would occasionally hear superman's dead on the radio during the late night "new and braeking music" and maybe one other song (at least where i live). we tend to associate songs we hear on the radio and selling out when they are not synonimous. just my 2 cents.

I don't think they've sold out because they're on the radio. I think they sold out because they went from making unique sort of odd music to making commercial rock that i expect from nickleback and lifehouse.

What songs do you gravity-fans like off it?

Eh, pretty much all of it. Innocent, Sorry, Do You Like It, All For You, and Story about a Girl are probably my current faves off it (oops thats about 1/2 the album ;))... the people who seem disgusted by the album, do you think the writing has changed as well as the sound?

I think that writing has changed in that there are no longer as many cool guitar riffs and solos that stand out because the music is more distorted. Also the singing is different, and there aren't really any times where he uses his voice in cool different ways like in Happiness and The Fish and Is Anybody Home.

I don't know how they can go from "All My Friends" on spiritual machines to "Somewhere Out There" on Gravity. Thats how i look at the change.

i've got every CD starting with Naveed through Gravity. I think they have a great sound, and sound like no one else. They are quite good.

Mattter of fact, I just got back from an OLP show here in town, and it was excellent. The third time I've seen them, easily the best show, they are so tight live.

Personally I think that Gravity is one of the stronger albums. And riffs? No riff is better than the one for "whatever" which can be found ont he wwe: forceable entry cd.

What kinds of music do you people who consider Gravity one of their strongest efforts like? This might be the reason for the riff.

They used to sound like no one else, but they are starting to. I really hope their next album sounds nothing like Gravity.
