I agree with Sebastian. One more gravityesque album and I'm going to stab myself iin the face repeatedly with an Aids-infected syringe.

This has been a pretty positive OLP thread and I hate to spoil the mood so be warned that I have great negativity regarding this band.

I am baffled at how this band has such hardcore fans, I just don't see the attraction. Musically, I think OLP is just fine, although they lean toward their Smashing Pumpkins influence a little too often, but hey, there's worse idols to have. My main problem with OLP is the lead singer. To me, he sounds like his voice is crackling high and low in a very unpleasant manner. I'm sorry, but I just can't stand the vocals and think there are much better options out there. Can someone explain to me what I am missing in this hack's voice? I'm sorry, but the early description of his voice being "mesmerizing" just doesn't cut it.

Just tell us what bands you like, so we can tear them apart.

Yeah seriously. Raine's voice is amazing, it gets constant praise from critics for being amazing, you apparently have horrible taste in the matter. Not to be critical.

seriously, i have to admit, i listen to a lot of those so-called "college rock/modern rock/manistream rock/whatever-it's-called-today" bands, and OLP is one of the very few bands (if they even qualify for this kind of music) who have a singer who not only has a unique voice, but lso knows how to use it. which, sadly, has become VERY rare nowadays.

I personally love Gravity. I'd probably rank it as a tie for my second favorite of theirs (tied with Happiness, behind Spiritual Machines). It's more straight rock/pop than their last two efforts, but I don't necessarily equate that with selling out. I certainly wouldn't lump it in with albums by groups like Puddle of Mudd, Staind, Creed, etc. etc. There haven't been that many recent straight rock albums that I enjoyed and I think that makes me enjoy Gravity even more. As for what type of music I typically listen to, currently in the portable cd case on my desk are:

Coldplay, Eels, Cake, Badly Drawn Boy, Guster, Lyle Lovett, Stroke 9, U2, Better than Ezra, Brad, OLP, Beck, Love Spit Love

Do I want all of OLP's albums from here on out to sound like Gravity? Nope, but I do think it's a very well done departure.

I think Gravity could possibly be their best album. I saw olp live a month ago in st. louis and they were amazing. They played plenty of cuts off of Gravity. Most of all, in the encore they included "A Story About a Girl" which is my favorite song off the album. The entire band came out to sign autographs after the show, and all of them were super friendly. I got to tell the new guitarist how much he rocked too!! All in all, they have been one of my favorite groups for a long time, and their new cd just cemented their status with me as one of the best rock bands still playing today.

It saddens me that the old guitarist quit, but I would have quit too if my band went from making great music to the music on Gravity.
