Kurt Cobain's widow Courtney Love says she has resolved the lawsuits between herself and the surviving members of Nirvana, paving the way for the long-awaited release of rare Nirvana material. Speaking this morning (Sept. 20) on "The Howard Stern Show," Love announced, "You'll get the new Nirvana record at Christmas. We love each other. We're getting along. We worked it all out." Asked by Stern why the case had finally been resolved, Love replied, "lots and lots and lots of money."

A spokesperson for Interscope, which will release the project, had not returned a call at deadline. It is not known if the label will issue a single-disc "greatest hits" album augmented with unreleased songs or a more comprehensive box set, which former Nirvana members Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl had planned to release last year in conjunction with the 10th anniversary of the band's breakthrough album, "Nevermind."

The parties have since been waging war against each other in the press and the courtroom, beginning when Love was granted an injunction against the box set's release by a Washington State Superior Court judge, on the grounds that the allegedly hit-worthy, previously unreleased song "You Know You're Right" belonged on a single-disc retrospective instead.

Grohl and Novoselic filed a countersuit against Love last December, and in April, the pair's request for Love to undergo a court-ordered psychiatric evaluation was rejected. But Novoselic recently told Billboard.com that things were calming down between the parties. As for the proposed content for the hits set, he said, "It's all safe. And that way the band wins, the estate wins, the fans win, everybody wins, so it's good will."

And while Love also said today she was "done with" her "other lawsuit," in an apparent reference to her contract dispute with Universal Music Group, her lawyer tells Billboard.com that both sides are "still talking." A trial was scheduled to begin Tuesday in Los Angeles Superior Court, but was postponed until Oct. 1.

Meanwhile, Love said she had finished nine new songs for an as-yet-undetermined project. Beginning tomorrow at 8 p.m. ET, the artist will host MTV2 for 24 hours of live programming from the station's New York studios.

A new poll about the promise of "lost" Nirvana music finally seeing the light of day is underway in The Voting Booth. Stop by and register your opinion today!

I hope it's the box set, not the 'greatest hits' disc with one new song. I'd like to hear "You Know You're Right" but I'm not playing into Love's money-grubbing hands by picking up a greatest hits CD of stuff I already own to get it.

I'd rather have a single disc or double-disc of nothing but unreleased or rare material rahter than an over-priced retrospective boxed set (that would duplicate a lot of material we already have on their albums).

Put me down for wanting a rarities compilation ala Incestiside rather than a best of/box set.

So maybe NOW we can get unplugged on DVD finally!

I would rather have all the unreleased tracks also. I just wonder if they have enough recordings for a full cd. Either way it's good news.

Another vote for unreleased material. I've got MP3s of 18 or so b-sides and would love to hear quality studio recordings of them.

Theres at least a good 25-30 tracks that i have that are unreleased. THere should be plenty, especially if they dip into some live stuff.....

I'd pick up anything that gets released. Looking forward to this

Oh and I still can't stand Courtney Love.

If it's a single "greatest hits" disc I'll just dl the new song, anything else and I'm picking it up. Good to hear this is finally settled.

I'd love to see Unplugged on dvd as well.

From the stories I've read about this, she has been pretty adamant about first issuing a single disc greatest hits cd with "You Know You're Right" on it, then somewhere down the line a box set. Then again it's Courtney Love so who knows what to believe with her.

Jesus Christ!

Who is she hoping to attract with this greatest hits package, Britney Spears fans? I mean really, only pop fans and parents will find it quaint to buy a grunge greatest hits cd. People who are true Nirvana fans already have all cds, and want some unreleased stuff. The box set sounds beautiful to me. I personally will not buy the greatest hits cd, but instead wait until NIRVANA'S wishes are fufilled, not just the wife of the late singer's.

I've heard many of the B-sides but not "You Know You're Right". Has anyone heard this yet, live or otherwise, or is it truly one song that has yet to see the "light of day". The reason I ask is, is it good enough to justify buying a greatest hits CD just to hear it?

(sigh) I'm prolly gonna buy any new Nirvana anything they put out anyway...

Unfortunatly beggers can't be chooses so you will have to settle with whatever Love decides to release. It would be so her is she re-recorded some of the music with her vocals on it.

Actually, I think that's pretty much what the entire "Live Through This" album was.

Here's the latest from Billboard.com. I'm still not picking up that "hits" CD when I own all the 'reg'lar' CDs, but I hope those other ones come out sooner than they say...

Update: Love, UMG Reach Settlement In Contract Suit

As expected, Courtney Love and Universal Music Group (UMG) have settled their long-standing contractual dispute. Under terms of the deal, Love is now free from her UMG contract and has already begun recording her debut album for the U.K.-based Poptones Records. The first single is expected in January; the set will feature songwriting contributions from 4 Non Blondes principal Linda Perry. UMG will receive royalties on an unspecified amount of Love's future recordings.

The settlement provides for the release of several albums from Love's late husband Kurt Cobain's band Nirvana, including an oft-discussed compilation with the unreleased song "You Know You're Right," a box set, and a collection of rarities. These projects have been held up by litigation and an ongoing media war between Love and Nirvana's surviving members, Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic. According to a statement, "separate permissions" to move forward with the archival releases were obtained from Grohl and Novoselic.

The single-disc hits package "Nirvana" will be released Nov. 12 via UMG, while a video for "You Know You're Right" is being assembled from previously unseen footage of the band. In recent days, an unauthorized copy of the song has flooded online file sharing services and was even played on several U.S. radio stations. The track was recorded just months before Cobain's 1994 suicide. The aforementioned box set is expected to be released in 2004.

"We hope that this release will enable longtime Nirvana fans to hear some of their favorite songs in a new context," Love, Novoselic, and Grohl said in a joint statement. "At the same time, the upcoming CD will allow a whole new audience to appreciate Nirvana's music and Kurt Cobain's great talent. We are now moving forward. We thank our fans for their support."

As part of the agreement, Love also obtained ownership of unreleased recordings from her defunct band, Hole, and may collaborate with UMG on a future long-form home video. The artist has not released an album since Hole's 1998 set "Celebrity Skin."

"I'm excited to be releasing music again and rock music is starting to become very fun," Love said in a separate statement. "I plan to continue my advocacy of artists [rights] in Sacramento, [Calif.] and Washington, [D.C.], where this belongs. I look forward to joining my fellow recording artists as we look for solutions to the problems we face in the music business. We must all work together through lobbying and collective bargaining to create the opportunities that have been lacking in our careers."

"We're glad that we have resolved this amicably and wish Courtney well in all of her future endeavors," UMG president/COO Zach Horowitz added.

Meanwhile, Love has been confirmed to star as Lady Macbeth in director Luc Besson's film adaptation of William Shakespeare's "Macbeth."

Post a link to your local radio's website by all means: I don't think that was one. I do think this board's policy on copyright material is amply clear.

I read some where that they're planning on releasing a Greatest Hits Disc, a Rarieties disc and a Box set.

I can't remember where I read it off the top of my head though.

Wow!

That's really sucktacular!

Looks like they're using the old "greatest-hits-album-with-a-dozen-songs-everyone-already-has-plus-one-brand-new-unreleased-song" play.

Got that right. I don't have the inclination to test it but I suspect that the total track time for all those "hits" is only about 55 minutes, not the 75-80 it could be.
