I'm not much of a Beck fan overall, but I think Midnite Vultures is an awesome album.

Not the only one.

I like him, though, at least up to (and including) Mutations, which is my 2nd favorite of the ones I've heard, behind Mellow Gold.

Never could get into Midnite Vultures.

Thanks for clearing that up.

Actually Weens earlier work is much better as well.
God-Ween-Satan: The Oneness
The Pod
Pure Guava

As for Beck:
One Foot in the Grave
Stereopathetic Soul Manure
Steve Threw Up
Mellowgold

I don't understand the appeal of Beck either. A friend of mine said to me " I think you're underestimating his talent" but I don't think I am. Everything I have heard by him is "average" at best. There's nothing the really blows me away.

I think alot of times it's a case of alot of people saying somebody is really talented then after a while nobody questions it anymore. Much like in the case with the Beastie Boys. Rolling Stone called the "All hype and no talent" back in 1987. Now all of a sudden they are geniuses.

If you're ever in a crowd of people, look up at the sky and keep looking. Then watch how many people will look up and swear they see something. It's the same idea.

That can certainly be true, but I know that I often think the exact opposite. A lot of times I like to stick up for smaller bands (well, I used to... I'm hopelessly out of touch these days). I think Beck is one of the rare exceptions of someone who is popular and also creative.

By the way, if you want to see a slam on a popular artist, check out the 2 star review of the new Peter Gabriel in Rolling Stone.
