Dammit...I've been searching in vain for some sort of "if you like X composer, then check out x composer" guide on the web and such...anyone have any ideas?

Check out Wagner and especially Mahler.

If you like epic and dark choral works, check out:

Bach - Mass in B minor
Mozart - Requiem
Brahms - A German Requiem

Three of my favorite pieces of music. Each is intense and beautiful.

Why should we discuss popular classical pieces? Why not discuss a composer like Nino Rota, whose classical repoitory is currently being rediscovered -- and it's made me very humble (Rota is somewhat of a musical philosopher)!
