Today's CDs (8/14)

Country Teasers -- Science Hat Artistic Cube Moral Nosebleed Empire
Country Teasers -- Destroy All Human Life
The Fall -- This Nation's Saving Grace
Hot Hot Heat -- Make Up the Breakdown

So I saw the Country Teasers twice this weekend... and they were fantastic both times. Really sloppy, ugly, shrill music. It was beautiful. It felt like I was watching the Fall in the early 80s, but with a twinge of country. A really crazy show. They're touring now, catch them if you can before they had back to Scotland.

Are you a Bright Eyes fan? If not, you might want to pass. My review, for a NYC mag:

Bright Eyes
Lifted or the Story Is In the Soil Keep Your Ear to the Ground
Saddle Creek

Conor Oberst (a.k.a. Bright Eyes) doesn't know when to say when. On his new album, the 73-plus minute Lifted or the Story Is In the Soil Keep Your Ear to the Ground, Oberst isn't content to merely let us know how he feels. He pleads for us to align ourselves with his wholly subjective musings, which are, at times, impenetrable. The melodies that frame them, however, are easy to grasp and difficult to escape, partially due to familiarity. The album's opener, "The Big Picture," sounds like a lo-fi version of Springsteen's "Wild Billy's Circus Story," "You Will. You?. . ." could be a Wilco B-side and "Laura Laurent" riffs on Dylan's "I Shall Be Released." But a lack of restraint keeps Oberst's tunes from being as affecting. "It's the ones with the sorest throats, Laura/Who have done the most singing" he bellows at the end of "Laura Laurent," as if the quantity of his compositions makes them more meaningful.

Not a Bright Eyes fan. I know I've heard him before (or at least heard of him) but nothing really sticks out in my mind. I've read a few reviews of the disc, and all gushed over how great it was. Sounded like something I would like, so I was just going to make a blind buy. From your review, maybe I'll download a few tracks first. Thanks.

It is good, it's just extraordinarily long and a little too precious. I think you might like it. I like him in small doses. The Everyday and Every Night EP is the best thing Conor has done, in my opinion.

Got the Bright Eyes disc this evening. I really like it. Really messy album, but succeeds in its ambition for the most part.

Wouldn't want to skip a "Today's CDs" thread:

Brian Jonestown Massacre - "Strung Out in Heaven" (bought for $.75...but it is one of their weakest efforts)
Unwound - "Leaves Turn Inside You"
Bark Psychosis - "Hex"
Sparta - "Wiretap Scars"
Neil Young - "On the Beach"
