Controversy sells records? Your Thoughts

Sometimes it seems like a fact that controversy sells albums. Eminem with his mom-bashing, wife-killing stuff and Marylin Manson with his Anti-Christ stuff are the first things I think about. Its pretty much for sure that these people wouldn't be as famous without the controversy but would they be sell as many albums? Also are some artists trying to be controversial in order to sell records? Your thoughts?

It makes one wonder how long Em will keep bashing his mom/wife or picking on so-called "pop artists" who are on their own 14:59 of fame as it is. His next album should be interesting.

Maybe.

Em really only dissed Pop artists in that one single "without me". IN his new album Eminem Show.

Being controversial doesn't make you famous...being a good musician makes you famous. Riding on the shirt tail of someone else who is famous (Dr. Dre) like everyone's fav. feminem doesn't make you famous.

I give him another year then you won't hear anything from him.

Hey Snoopdogg, whats up?

What's controversial anymore? J. Ho said the "N" word, Janet said F**k, Prince released a jazz new age cd and who cared.

There was a time when it did help, but now people are really paying more attention to the music rather than the message.

Publicity sells records.

Sometimes notorious people get it; sometimes talented people; sometimes neither; sometimes both.

Who said that Britney Spears is famous? I'll admit that her 1st cd did pretty good on the record charts but what about her 2nd? I don't even think it made it on to the charts. She should stick with the movie career...lol

Umm. Not to be a Spears expert here, but her second album sold like a million + in the first week. I think it makes her famous.

Of course controversy sells. Someone mentioned that the only Eminem show that dissed people was "Without Me". Ironically that was also the first one released.

Of course controversy sells. Look at 2 Live Crew. Their record "As Nasty as they Wanna Be" sucked major ass, but people bought them like hotcakes. What's funny is by today's standard's the record could be in the children's section.

And what's the second released single about?

...his mom.

Hopefully "Cleaning Out My Closet" will be the end of it...

OK let me get this straight...judging by everyone's comments, I could assume Salt 'n' Peppa were famous cuz the song "lets talk about sex"?

This maybe a little off topic but, Where is DJ Jazzy Jeff? The only reason Will Smith is famous is cuz of him.

I can't believe this is even a question. Of course it's true.

Let us not forget the younger generation's figure head for anti-establishment behavior - Fred Durst... a VP at Interscope Records who created the "character" of Fred Durst - Limp Bizkit frontman.
