Rolling Stones Remasters Before Tour

I just read in Time magazine that EMI is going to issue all of the Stones CDs remastered
to go along with the tour which starts September 9 (I think) in Boston. I for one, am going to
get Sticky Fingers, Beggars Banquest, Let it Bleed and Exile.
Just think if George Martin did the Stones like he did the Beatles.

On August 20, there will be Super Audio hybrid discs of all of the Stones' ABKCO releases--everything up until Sticky Fingers, I believe. These new remasters will work on both SACD players and regular CD players. Twenty-two different releases, I'm pretty sure.

Let It Bleed and Beggars Banquet will be re-released, but Sticky Fingers and Exile on Main Street are now owned by Virgin, and they have already remastered and re-released them, several years ago. AFAIK, there are no new remasters planned for those anytime soon.

Once Sony gets the rest of the rights from Wacko Jacko, I hope some good things will start happening with that catalog.

This release sounds great. I'll have to pick up several of these. Does anyone have any idea what these SA hybrid discs will cost?

Edited on 8/30 to add complete track list for Forty Licks.

From CDnow: The Rolling Stones greatest hits collection, the two-disc Forty Licks, is set for an Oct. 1 release on EMI's Virgin Records. Four new songs have been recorded with producer Don Was for inclusion on the set as well.

Each disc (the first CD includes hits released on the ABKCO label, and the second disc contains the Virgin Records hits) will include 20 digitally remastered songs, such as "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction," "Ruby Tuesday," "Brown Sugar," "Miss You," "Start Me Up," "Gimme Shelter," "Get Off My Cloud," "Paint It Black," and "Happy."

The label won't be revealing the full track listing for the album. And, only one title of the four new songs has been revealed: "Don't Stop." The track will be released as a single from the album, according to an EMI rep.

Meanwhile, the release of the Rolling Stones Remastered Series has been delayed a week to Aug. 27, due to production issues, according to a spokesperson for the project.

I never saw the original LP artwork for these records, but it appears that they have either been changed to a slightly different picture, or changed to a better copy of the LP artwork.

That would completely ruin the Stones. No way would I want George Martin to touch them.

As for these reissues, when they were announced about a month or two ago I had just finished buying every Stones album up until Some Girls. Maybe two days earlier I had bought the last three records. I was pissed, as you can imagine.

Well, Rolling Stone just came out with their review of each of the Rolling Stones reissues. Each is given a star rating, and there is an article next to them which hardly talks about the reissues at all, more about the legacy of the Stones. Anyway, here's what those guys say (in order of highest to lowest rated):

Out of Our Heads (UK) *****
Big Hits (high tide and green grass) *****
Beggar's Banquet *****
Let it Bleed *****
Hot Rocks *****
England's Newest ****
12X5 ****
Stones, Now! ****
Out of Our Heads (US) ****
Aftermath (UK)****
Aftermath (US) ****
Got LIVE ****
Between the Buttons (UK) ****
More Hot Rocks ****
Singles Collection ****
Between the Buttons (US) ***
Flowers ***
Satanic Majesties ***
Big Hits Vol. 2 ***
Ya Ya's ***
Metamorphosis (UK) **

Well. there it is. The main shocker to me was the fact that the only pre-"Beggar's" album they gave ***** to was Out of Our Heads (UK), neglecting Aftermath and Between the Buttons (giving them **** each). Never having heard Out of our heads I couldnt say much, but I've always heard people talk of Aftermath as seemingly the definitive pre-"Beggar's" Stones record. Am I the only one?

"Get Your Ya-Yas Out" only 3 stars? That was the Stones live in their prime, it's ***** in my book.

Well, bigjim, could you help me out? What will be so special about the limited edition of Forty Licks? I know it has some sort of special packaging, but I'm not sure that alone will be worth the extra $8-10. Thanks.

Yeah, but I can't really tell what that is. I guess the B&W picture is a poster, but beyond that I have no idea. At CC the difference of the sets will be $17.99 vs $24.99 and I don't think a poster would be worth the extra $7.
Is that box supposed to be a holograph?

I read the heading and thought it would have something to do with changing Keith Richards' blood and pumping him full of adrenalin.

Thanks Brian, that's what I needed to know. Still not sure which version to get, though...

BTW: Has anyone noticed that in stores, none of these remastered CDs have anything on them about being SACD hybrids? I thought that was weird.

Yeah same here Decker,

I already have Out of Our Heads, Aftermath, Between the Buttons, Their Satanic Majesties Request, Beggars Banquet, Get Yer Ya-Yas, Let It Bleed, Hot Rocks 1964-1971, Sticky Fingers, Exile On Main St. and Some Girls. So, I am not sure whether it is worth my money to buy a greatest hits package, just because it has 4 new songs. Then again, I'll probably buy it anyhow...

Not on the outside, but there is mention of the SACD layer on the inside of the discs. Nobody knows why they didn't hype up the SACD layer more, but I'm guessing they didn't want to confuse people.
