Freddie Mercury & Michael Jackson duets leaked on the net!
In the early 80's, Freddie Mercury (the late lead singer of Queen) recorded 3 songs with Michael Jackson. Jackson and Queen were fairly good friends (according to Queen drummer Roger Taylor, it was Jackson who suggested they release "Another One Bites the Dust" as a single. It was the band's biggest hit in the U.S.)
Anyway, Freddie stopped by Jackson's house to work on a few songs. They were "Victory", "State of Shock" and "There Must Be More to Life than This". The demos were ran through a few times but sadly left unfinished as both men had their own tours/albums to work on.
Ever since, fans of both have been wondering how the songs came out, if they'd ever get the chance to hear them, etc.
A few years back, a box set of virtually every Mercury track recorded was released and fans had hoped the duets with Jackson would be included. They were not.
Some speculated that Jackson was holding on to them for a release of his own (lord knows he needs *something* to help his downward spiral.)
As yet, they have not been officially released anywhere in the world.
Flash back to late June/early July, 2002.
Someone, somehow, managed to get a hold of 2 of the 3 songs that Mercury/Jackson worked on and posted them on the internet as MP3's. They were "State of Shock" and "There Must Be More to Life than This".
As some of you may know, "State of Shock" was released but with Mick Jaggar instead of Mercury. "...More to Life than This" ended up as a Freddie only track on his album "Mr. Bad Guy".
Today, I finally heard these 2 tracks for the first time.
"State of Shock" certainly has potential. In it's current demo state, it's far too unpolished for commercial release but with an updated dance beat, it could *easily* be a top 10 hit throughout most of the world. Seriously. This song came when Jackson was, well, normal, with a lot of fire and energy. His fans surely long for those days and would eat this up. Naturally, Mercury has a great number of fans and of course, unreleased material from a famous, deceased singer gets a good deal of press.
The song is a lot of fun with various ad-libs from Freddie and Michael and their voices worked well together. Of course Mercury had the stronger voice but that's a discussion for another time.
"There Must Be More to Life than This" was written by Mercury but it is Jackson who handles vocals with Freddie playing piano (he's also heard giving directions briefly.) There are no other instruments played.
This is the rougher sounding of the two songs and I must say, with Jackson's rather "soft" singing, he just didn't sound *right* on this ballad. Perhaps if Freddie had provided backing vocals it would've been stronger. Regardless, with some remixing and layering Jackson's vocals, it can still be a wonderful song.
For those interested, these MP3's should be available somewhere (I'm sure you'll know where to look.) Like I said, these are demos and not finished material but is worth a listen, if for no other reason than to hear two performers who at the time, were some of the biggest stars in the world.
