Me'Shell Indegeocello "COOKIE" thoughts?

I just picked this up and so far so good. Me'shell can get pretty militant at times but I see where she's coming from I guess.

I've only heard the firs few songs so I can't say how the rest of it is.

IMO...it's just okay. It's basically Peace Beyond Passion part II. I liked the direction she was going with Bitter and she departed from that.

She has definitely secured a signature sound and her music is an excellent alternative to most of the crap that's out there...I just wish she would have taken more chances musically than lyrically.

Well, she's been downplaying her bass playing for years. I kept reading how she considered herself more a songwriter than bassplayer

That's such a shame because her playing is up there with some of the best.

She got a lot of grief from her record company for "BITTER" because it didn't have any kick ass funk like her past cds. They told her it wouldn't sell.

Agreed...she is a great bass player and you should check her out live...excellent. It doesn't look like she is playing Gibson basses anymore but I may be wrong. I could have sworn she was playing a Modulus last time I saw her live.

I'm not sure why she would get grief from her record company because she has never been a big seller. Even with Plantation Lullabies she had her biggest hit with "If That's Your Boyfriend"..but even that wasn't a mega hit.

She definitely matured with Bitter which makes it a tough choice of which I like better...Peace Beyond Passion or Bitter...personally I just loved the Wendy and Lisa influence on Bitter. Most can't handle her lyrics and as a result does not get any airplay of note.

I am sure she writes from the heart but she seemed a little too in your face on Cookie. She basically re-hashed what she was talking about on Peace Beyond Passion but more graphic now.

Still...there are some very nice supprises musically on the new album...just not where I was hoping she was going.

Yeah she's been endorsing MODULUS for some time now.

I agree, her lyrics are getting more out there than in the past.

Bitter is a classic.

And it's one of those rare albums that demand to be listened to straight through from beginning to the end. [IMO]

Hopefully i'll be seeing her next Friday.

Yeah, it needed to grow on me but I like BITTER.

Wasn't Prince on this cd?

I saw her last nite at Toad's Place in New Haven, CT.

She f'n rocked. An hour and a half of funky grooves.

Her band was tight as hell. [The tightest i've seen since Prince.]

She did a 12 minute version of "Faithful" [one of my favorite tracks from 'Bitter'] that was reminiscent of early Funkadelic. They're gonna be scraping the funk off the ceiling for DAYS.

I got to meet her after the show. We were in front of the stage near where the artists "usually" come on, but she walked off stage another way. [probably to avoid people like me ] So after buying a Cookie t-shirt, we waited out front. There were two possible ways she could exit -- I watched one and my girlfriend watched the other. I told my girlfriend if she saw her to show a lil leg -- that would catch her eye . After 5 minutes of waiting, she came out and stopped to give a homeless guy that was hanging around some cash. I walked up to her. Introduced myself. Told her I was a DJ at a college radio station. Gave her my business card. She told me to play what I want. That we were the way of the future. I told her that the next time she was in the area, i'd love to interview her. She told me that she'd love to do it. I told her I wanted to do it before this show and I contacted Maverick, she said "Maverick Sucks!" Then, while she was trying to get two honeys she picked up during the show [Diamond Dave style, i'm sure ], she was saying "Down With Time Warner." After she saw her ladies stop and talk with some friends of hers, she came back our way and signed my "Peace Beyond Passion" CD cover [I would've loved for her to have signed 'Bitter', but the cover's too dark].

All in all, this experience kicked much ass. [even though i felt like a male groupie for a lil while there ]

And to think...i wasn't even going to go.

If she's near your town, run -- don't walk -- to see her.
