Pere Ubu - ST. ARKANSAS - wow.
25 years old and counting. The seminal art-punk band from my hometown of Cleveland, OH releases their new album, ST. ARKANSAS.
They have no business being together after all this time, all this commercial failure, all this outsiderism, all this cultishness, all these lineup changes.
They have no business being this good.
This one ranks up there with their first few albums from the late 70s. It surpasses the stunning artistry of Pennsylvania (1998) and their too-often dismissed 'accessible' records from the 1988-1993 period. ST. A combines the talent for melody and buried hooks David Thomas and crew have always possessed with the raw texture of their simply-produced, straight-for-the-solar-plexus sound of The Modern Dance (1978).
Listening to this CD is a movie for your ear, a cinematic experience. It's going to stay glued in my disc drawer for a looooooong time...I'd be surprised if I hear a better CD this year, and after Tom Waits' 2 new releases that's high praise indeed from this consumer.
