I liked Blink 182's pre-signing stuff, but their newer stuff isn't my taste. I only liked Offspring's first 7" - I saw them live opening for a band called the g'rups playing for about 100 people and they were pretty decent. They're really super nice guys. If you think Green Day is low profile, you're sadly mistaken... don't you remember the 90's?
Poor Al Sorbronte, booted from Green Day and then booted from The Ne'er Do Wells/Hi FIves before they got big and opened for Green Day at the Oakland Colloseium. I remember seeing Green Day open for Sam I Am at a quad at UCSC. But i also remember Nirvana opening for Dinosaur Jr and a small club.

All punk that you hear is "mainstream" and "sold out" unless MRR says its cool.

Whatever happened to Flipside? That was a great magazine. Much better than the high and mighty MRR.

Pirate punk is fading quickly.

Why was it better? Cuz the cover was in color? I stopped getting flipside sometime in the early 90's cuz they started going all metal and grunge like they were sponsored by Sub Pop or something. I kept getting MRR for a few years every now and then because they at least tried to maintain a non-mainstream punk ethic. These days it doesn't really matter anymore since the kids starting bands don't even really know what it was about or what it should be about... with few exceptions I guess. Oldest flipside I have is from 84 and has an interview with G.I. I also have their first comp ablums. I've gotten a few other fanzines here and there, but I can't think of what they were called... There's one that was kinda popular that is new within the last 5 years or so... I also was getting the No Idea zines for awhile - they came with 7" records usually and then started coming with CDs. Man - I was really into it back then. Now that everything is on the internet, it doesn't really matter to me. Wish the internet was around when I was a kid. I used to mailorder from Blacklist - Too bad they are gone.

Flipside was better, because they didn't judge bands based on what label they were on. Good music is good music. I could really care less what label they're on. MRR always had this high & mighty attitude. The fact of the matter is, bands like Blatz and Filth might be as punk as ****, but they sound like ****!
The bands I like, such as Face to Face, Strung Out, Lagwagon weren't even covered in MRR.

I don't remember any metal/grunge issues of flipside. I do remember them doing an article on Corrosion of Conformity though.

My friend was in Corrosion of Conformity... he's fat and married to some philipino chick. I remember flipside being a label pimp... both MRR and flipside were label pimps at one point or another, but I think MRR at least tried to stick with truly independent stuff. You may not like blatz or filth, but they weren't being funded by some corporation and that's what MRR was kinda about - providing a publication for those who can't really afford to advertise in Rolling Stone or Flipside. They have no reason to advertise for Lagwagon or Strung Out because their label promoted them well - Fat records makes alot of money. I do remember seeing face to face, lagwagon and strung out in MRR every month years ago... they still did allow ads for these bands... I don't know when they stopped though. It's been awhile since I picked one up. Around that time, Flipside was having interviews with these bands I had never heard of and they all seemed to look like either the Cars from 1983 or Poison from 1986. Then I started seeing the bands appear on headbangers ball, so I figured flipside was a glam rock/alternative magazine. I don't really remember why I stopped reading flipside, but it was partly because of that and partly because of something else... maybe it was the sub pop thing. I don't know. I actually like Blatz, Filth, and face to face. They're more mainstream, but that's okay. I listen to Radiohead too. I don't really care. It's all about pirate punk anyway... aarrrrgh!

If you like all these bands, then what is the relevance of being on a major label or being sponsored by Playstation? It seems like a non-issue.
The reason Fat Wreck Chords makes a lot of money is because 99% of the bands that they sign are great. Fat Mike knows what he likes, and fortunately, he likes what I like.
Rumor has it. The next band that he plans on signing is the legendary pirate band "Scurvy".

Well if you're referring to the whole warped tour thing - I happily went to the first one and decided never to go again. The crowd was just mostly jocks or little kids and I just didn't fit-in there. It wasn't really a sponsored event, but it was poorly managed and kinda expensive. A low-rent lolapaloosa if you will. I didn't really care about most of the bands playing that first time and so most of my time was spent waiting and wishing they had brought more water or provided more bathrooms or something. It was the worst punk show I had ever been to (and I've been to plenty) and going to this last one wasn't really high up on my priority list. I've seen Blatz and Filth and Face to Face play. I've seen Lag Wagon and Strung Out play as well. I really don't need to see any of them play again. Face to face I've seen at least half a dozen times... I've seen enough quite frankly. Going to some open stadium in the summertime in Arizona to watch some punk rock during the daytime hours is just stupid. I didn't really care if I saw any of the bands that played this time and in fact once I got there I wanted to turn around and go back home. I was the oldest person there by 10 years except for some of the bands... and even then, the bands that were getting the most attention were MTV bands whose members are 10 years younger than me. I had to be dragged there because I knew it wasn't gonig to appeal to me and I had been boycotting the Warped Tour ever since the first one. This experience this most recent time was worse than my first - This time they planned it even worse than the first time - they ran out of water 3 hours in to the show and people were throwing their water bottles and they had like one bathroom or something. The kids were all pretty lame and most of them would say "Who the hell is Fear?" which is just unforgiveable. Anyway - needless to say I didn't have a good time. I prefer to go to shows that are more intimate and inside and that only cost 5 bucks or so. Epic sized lollapalooza shows are garbage IMHO and I plan to reinstate my boycott. Truth is, I've seen so many shows that I pretty much know what they're about and don't need to go to any more. Moshing is something different now and merchandising is also something different now. I still go see about 3 shows a year, but I'm really picky about what it is.

As for your Fat Wreck comments - Fat bands all sound the same as each other. I like alot of bands on that label, but I think it's kinda sad that they're capitalizing on all this mainstream interest in punk music and contributing to the exploitation of it which diminishes the purity and the meaning behind it. I'm older now and I have more important things to do than promote and support punk ethos and "do things for the scene" - but that doesn't mean I can't still have my opinions about it. Ultimately I think punk rock is for kids, so I guess I can't lay claim to it anymore. All I can do is say that "I was there when it was still cool" and take strange looks from teenagers who think I'm just some old loser/burnout.

In what way are Fat Wreck Chords capatilizing on the "mainstreem interest in punk music"? I will agree, that they do have a certain sound, but they aren't on MTV, once in a blue moon you might here a fat band on the radio, and you don't see them advertising anywhere, but in punk/alternative magazines.

I'm sorry that you've had bad experiences at the Warped Tour. I look forward to this event every year. 30 bucks for about 15 or so good bands is a good deal to me. Yeah, the food and drink is so expensive, it's ridiculous, but the band merch is still cheap. Usually 10$ for shirts and CD's. So I'd say most of the bands there are still keepin' it real.
