It's almost like a bible passage.
But it's terribly profound when sung through a gaping hole in your front teeth.

Like alt-hillbilly, er sumthin'.

From Whenever, Wherever by Shakira...

"Lucky that my breasts are small and humble
So you don't confuse them with mountains."

I have to also defend Nelly's Hot in Here as a "party song". It's pretty obvious that this is one of those songs that's not meant to be deep, but just have a beat you can dance to, and a few quotable lines.

One that just boggles my mind is Cat Steven's song about the cab driver finding his old girlfriend in his cab. How can the man who was able to write the wonderful and moving, non-perverted love song from a father to his son write this... this "thing" It's so bad you can't even criticize it, it's just bad.

As for the Shakira song:
A. it's probably translated from Spanish, so it might not make perfect sense.
B. small breasts can be quite nice if well shaped

I was a huge Babyface fan up until a couple years ago, and while I think he's had some of the best R&B/pop ballads of the recent era, some of his generic writing has really bugged me -- and on some of the more popular songs:

Toni Braxton's "You Mean the World To Me"-

You mean the world to me
You are my everything
I swear the only thing that matters to me
Oh baby baby baby baby baby

I also think "I'll Make Love To You" by Boyz II Men (#1 for several weeks) is also an incredibly cliched song, lyric-wise. Some would say all of Babyface's songs are that way, but he does have some masterpeices.

As an English major, I cringe anytime I hear Alanis Morrisette sing "Isn't It Ironic":
An old man turned ninety - eight
He won the lottery and died the next day
It's a black fly in your Chardonnay
It's a death row pardon two minutes too late
Isn't it ironic... don't you think

CHORUS:
It's like rain on your wedding day
It's a free ride when you've already paid
It's the good advice that you just didn't take
Who would've thought... it figures

Mr. Play It Safe was afraid to fly
He packed his suitcase and kissed his kids good - bye
He waited his whole damn life to take that flight
And as the plane crashed down he thought
Well isn't this nice...
And isn't it ironic... don't you think

REPEAT CHORUS

Well life has a funny way of sneaking up on you
When you think everything's okay and everything's going right
And life has a funny way of helping you out when
You think everything's gone wrong and everything blows up
In your face

A traffic jam when you're already late
A no - smoking sign on your cigarette break
It's like ten thousand spoons when all you need is a knife
It's meeting the man of my dreams
And then meeting his beautiful wife
And isn't it ironic... don't you think
A little too ironic... and yeah I really do think...
Isn't it ironic? A little too ironic? NO. Unfortunate, sure. But none of it is in the least ironic.

Somewhere, O. Henry is rolling in his grave...

I don't recall the rap song, but the lyrics were:

"I gave the girl a hysterectomy for disrespecting me."

And therein lies the irony. Of course, I don't think she planned it that way.

For the person who brought up Tori Amos' 'Silent all these years', that line was intentional.

Think of the context and the two lines that follow it...

Personally, I can't stand any common / pop song. You know the usual, love story bullshit song.

Though, I would say a new annoying one is 'Stacie's Mom' song. Argh! I can't stand that damn song.

And how can you guy's forget the semi-hit 'Blue' by Eifel last year or so? What the hell was that man sayin' during that song?

These lyrics come from a platinum album from 1984, and I actually like the song, but the lyrics are, well, here they are...

"You're lighting up like sparkles
You look like you are ghosts
You put your hands up in the air
and treat me like a host."

I have NO idea what they were thinking (or was that drinking), but QUIET RIOT sure came up with THE ABSOLUTE WORST LYRICS OF ALL TIME THERE!!!

Those priceless lyrics, by the way, came from the song, "Scream and Shout," from their Condition Critical album. I love that album, but those lyrics are just, well...

and and and (most importantly)

(They are, by far, the worst lyrics on that album.)

I still haven't read anything on this thread that comes close to those lyrics for sheer badness.

I think I've found the worst ever, sorry if someone else has posted this:

You know say daddy me snow me-a (gonna) blame
A licky boom-boom down
'Tective man he say, say Daddy Me Snow me stab someone down the lane
A licky boom-boom down

Police-a them-a they come and-a they blow down me door
One him come crawl through through my window
So they put me in the back the car at the station
From that point on I reach my destination
Well the destination reached in down-a East detention
Where they whip down me pants look up me bottom

[CHORUS]

Bigger they are they think they have more power
There on the phone me say that on hour
Me for want to use it once and-a me call me lover
Lover who me callin'-a the one Tammy
And me love her in my heart down to my belly-a
Yes say Daddy Me Snow me I feel cool and deadly
Yes the one MC Shan and the one Daddy Snow
Together we-a love 'em(?) as a tornado

[CHORUS]

Listen to me ya better listen for me now
Listen to me ya better listen for me now
When-a me rock-a the microphone, me rock on steady-a
Yes-a Daddy Me Snow me are the article don
But the in an a-out (?) a dance an they say, "Where ya come from?"
People them say I come from Jamaica
But me born and raised (in the ghetto) I want ya to know-a
Pure black people man thats all I man know
Yeah me shoes are-a tear up an-a my toes used to show-a
Where me-a born in-a the one Toronto

[CHORUS]

Come with a nice young lady
Intelligent, yes she gentle and irie
Everywhere me go me never lef' her at all-ie
Yes-a Daddy Snow me are the roam dance man-a
Roam between-a dancin' in-a in-a nation-a
You never know say Daddy Me Snow me are the boom shakata
Me never lay-a down flat in-a one cardboard box-a
Yes-a Daddy Me Snow me-a go reachin' out da top

[CHORUS]

Why would he? [repeat]

[MC Shan:]

Me sittin round cool with my jiggy jiggy girl
Police knock my door, lick up my pal
Rough me up and I cant do a thing
Pick up my line when my telephone ring
Take me to the station, black up my hands
Trail me down 'cause I'm hangin with the Snowman
What an I gonna do, I'm backed and I'm trapped
Smack me in my face, took all of my gap
They have no clues and they wanna get warmer
But Shan won't turn informer

[CHORUS]

I always figured the lyrics must have made some sense, just that his accent was preventing it, with with lines like: And me love her in my heart down to my belly-a
Yes say Daddy Me Snow me I feel cool and deadly
Yes the one MC Shan and the one Daddy Snow
Together we-a love 'em(?) as a tornado

I have my doubts.

One thing / I don’t know why
It doesn’t even matter how hard you try
Keep that in mind / I designed this rhyme
To explain in due time
All I know

time is a valuable thing
Watch it fly by as the pendulum swings
Watch it count down to the end of the day
The clock ticks life away
It’s so unreal
Didn’t look out below
Watch the time go right out the window
Trying to hold on / but didn’t even know
Wasted it all just to
Watch you go
I kept everything inside and even though I tried / it all fell apart
What it meant to me / will eventually / be a memory / of a time when I tried
so hard

And got so far
But in the end
It doesn't even matter
I had to fall
To lose it all
But in the end
It doesn't even matter

One thing / I don’t know why
It doesn’t even matter how hard you try
Keep that in mind / I designed this rhyme
To remind myself how
I tried so hard

In spite of the way you were mocking me
Acting like I was part of your property
Remembering all the times you fought with me
I’m surprised it got so (far)
Things aren’t the way they were before
You wouldn’t even recognize me anymore
Not that you knew me back then
But it all comes back to me
In the end
You kept everything inside and even though I tried / it all fell apart
What it meant to me / will eventually / be a memory / of a time when I
I tried so hard

And got so far
But in the end
It doesn’t even matter
I had to fall
To lose it all
But in the end
It doesn’t even matter

I’ve put my trust in you
Pushed as far as I can go
And for all this
There’s only one thing you should know
I’ve put my trust in you
Pushed as far as I can go
And for all this
There’s only one thing you should know
I tried so hard
And got so far
But in the end
It doesn’t even matter
I had to fall
To lose it all
But in the end
It doesn’t even matter

found some bad lyrics from our favorite canadian sk8r chick

Don't Tell Me Lyrics

You held my hand and walked me home, I know
Why you gave me the kiss, it was something like this, it made me go oh oh
You wiped my tears, got rid of all my fears, why did you have to go?
Guess it wasn't enough to take up some of my love, guys are so hard to trust

Did I not tell you that I'm not like that
Girls the one who gives it all away

Did you think that I was gonna give it up to you, this time
Did you think that it was somethin' I was gonna do, and cry
Don't try to tell me what to do, don't try to tell me what to say
You're better off that way

Don't think that your charm and the fact that your arm is now around my neck
Will get you into my pants, I'll have to kick your ass and make you never forget
I'm gonna ask you to stop, thought I liked you a lot, but im really upset, Really upset
Get outta my head, get off of my bed, yeah that's what I said

Did I not tell you that I'm not like that
Girl the one who throws it all away

Did you think that I was gonna give it up to you, this time
Did you think it was something I was gonna do, and cry
Don't try to tell me what to do, don't try to tell me what to say
You're better off that way

This guilt trip that you put me on won't mess me up cuz I've done no wrong
Any thoughts of you and me have gone away

Did you think that I was gonna give it up to you, this time
Did you think it was something I was gonna do and cry
Don't try to tell me what to do, don't try to tell me what to say
You're better off that way

Better off that way
I'm better off alone anyway

a mash up special-

I just call to say I love you
I just call to say how much I care
I just call to say I love you
And I mean it from the bottom of my heart
-Stevie Wonder

Hello, is it me you're looking for?
'Cause I wonder where you are
And I wonder what you do
Are you somewhere feeling lonely
or is someone loving you?
Tell me how to win your heart
For I haven't got a clue
But let me start by saying
I love you

Bush songs have some pretty stupid lyrics.

Completely nonsensical... not witty or anything. Just stupid.

I like some of their music, but the lyrics are dumb.

She don’t care about my car
She don’t care about my money
And that’s real good because I don’t got alot to spend
But if I did it wouldn’t mean nothin’

She likes me for me
Not because I look like tyson beckford
With the charm of robert redford
Oozing out my ears
But what she sees
Are my faults and indecisions
My insecure conditions
And the tears upon the pillow that I shed

She don’t care about my big screen
Or my collection of dvd’s
Things like that just never mattered much to her
Plus she don’t watch to much t.v.

And she don’t care that I can fly her
To places she ain’t never been
But if she really wants to go
I think deep down she knows that
All she has to say is when

She likes me for me
Not because I hang with leonardo
Or that guy who played in ’fargo’
I think his name is steve
She’s the one for me
And I just can’t live without her
My arms belong around her
And I’m so glad I found her once again

And I’m so glad I found her once again
And I’m so glad I found her once again
Gazing at the ceiling
As we entertain our feelings in the dark
The things that we’re afraid of are gonna show us
What we’re made of in the end

She likes me for me
Not because I sing like pavarotti
Or because I am such a hottie
I like her for her
Not because she’s phat like cindy crawford
She has got so much to offer
Why does she waste all her time with me
There must be something there that I don’t see

She likes me for me
Not because I’m tough like dirty hairy
Make her laugh just like jim carrey
Unlike the cable guy
But what she sees
Is that I can’t live without her
My arms belong around her
And I’m so glad I found her once again
Found her once again
I’m so glad I found her once again
On again

The BBC recently ran a poll for the worst lyrics of all time, the winners:
1. Des'ree - 'Life'
"I don't want to see a ghost/It's the sight that I fear most/I'd rather have a piece of toast/Watch the evening news"

2. Snap - 'Rhythm Is A Dancer'
"I'm as serious as cancer when I say rhythm is a dancer"

3. Razorlight - 'Somewhere Else'
"And I met a girl/She asked me my name/I told her what it was"

4. ABC - 'That Was Then But This Is Now'
"More sacrifices than an Aztec priest/Standing here straining at that leash/All fall down/Can't complain, mustn't grumble/Help yourself to another piece of apple crumble!"

5. U2 - 'Elevation'
"I've got no self control/Been living like a mole now/Going down, excavation/High and high in the sky/You make me feel like I can fly/So high/Elevation"

6. Toto - 'Africa'
"The wild dogs cry out in the night/As they grow restless longing for some solitary company/I know that I must do what's right/Sure as Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus above the Serengeti"

7. Oasis - 'Champagne Supernova'
"Slowly walking down the hall/Faster than a cannonball/Where were you when we were getting high?"

8. Duran Duran - 'Is There Something I Should Know?'
"And fiery demons all dance when you walk through that door
Don't say you're easy on me you're about as easy as a nuclear war"

9. Human League - 'The Lebanon'
"Before he leaves the camp he stops/He scans the world outside/And where there used to be some shops/Is where the snipers sometimes hide"

10. Black Sabbath - 'War Pigs'
"Generals gathered in their masses/Just like witches at black masses"
Obviously a very Brit-centric list, but some of those are comically funny.

I'd nominate:
"What's Up" by 4 Non-Blondes:
25 years and my life is still
I'm trying to get up that great big hill of hope
For a destination
I realized quickly when I knew I should
that the world was made up of this brotherhood of man
for whatever that means
And so I cry sometimes when I'm lying in bed
Just to get it all out what's in my head
"We Built the City" by Starship:
Say you don't know me, or recognise my face
Say you don't care who goes to that kind of place
Knee deep in the hoopla, sinking in your fight
Too many runaways eating up the night

Marconi plays the mamba,
Listen to the radio -
Don't you remember?
We built this city,
We built this city on rock an' roll!
Der Kommisar by After the Fire
But its not that I don't care so
'Cause I hear it all the time
But they never let you know
On the TV and the radio
She was young her heart was pure
But every night is bright she got
She said sugar is sweet
She come rappin' to the beat
Then I knew that she was hot
..or perhaps a little MacArthur Park:
MacArthur's Park is melting in the dark
All the sweet, green icing flowing down
Someone left the cake out in the rain
I don't think that I can take it
'Cause it took so long to bake it
And I'll never have that recipe again
Oh, no!
Of course, "My Humps" is just too easy to pick...

How about an Andre Nickatina lyric...

"Put a phone on your butt, it's a booty call..."
"I'm not a pimp, but I'll cut one's hand off and slap ya wit it..."

"Superwoman" by Karyn White is one of my favorite songs of all time (I'm a sucker for late-'80s R&B ballads, but it has some of the worst lyrics I"ve ever heard in a song. A sampling:

Early in the morning
I put breakfast at your table
And make sure that your coffee
Has its sugar and cream

Your eggs are over easy
Your toast done lightly
All that's missing is your morning kiss
That used to greet me

Now you say the juice is sour
It used to be so sweet
And I can't help but to wonder
If you're talking 'bout me

We don't talk the way we used to talk
It's hurtin' so deep
I've got my pride, I will not cry
But it's makin' me weak

I'm not your superwoman
I'm not the kind of girl that you can let down
And think that everything's okay
Boy, I am only human
This girl needs more than occasional
Hugs as a token of love from you to me, ooh, baby

Now this is hysterical for rhyming. When creating a rhyme it's cheating to use the exact same word! I know there are some other songs that do this too. List any you can think of

Mordred
Between the original and Faith No More's cover I've probably heard this song 200 times and I never realized they were rhyming the same word. Maybe its the way its sung since the first masses is higher and longer and the second is softer. Or maybe I'm just dumb.

It's still a great song though.

So is MacArthur Park. The lyrics are may be bad, but thats part of the appeal to the song.

The worst lyrics in a song are pretty much any lyric that tries to use Chimpanzee as a rhyme

"So her nights became nightmares...
As she fought for their souls
And the days became worse...
For the ones she had lost
Children of the world...
the forgotten chimpanzee
In the eyes of the world...
you have done so much for me"
- Stevie Nicks

I should add I consider Stevie to be the greatest female rock songwriter to have lived thus far and I still say the lyrics above are the worst in any song.
