Hello...I'm new to this forum in general (but I'm not new to message boards in general, so yes, I know, I'm a "newbie" and trying to not be hated immediately).
I hope you don't mind me replying to this thread, as my cd and mp3 collection consists mostly of bands I consider emo.

For the originator of this thread, or anyone experiencing strong emotions, especially heartbreak, just about any songs off these bands' albums should do:

*Cursive Domestica
*Bright Eyes Fevers and Mirrors
*Get Up Kids Something to Write Home About; Four Minute Mile
*Mineral Power of Failing
*Sunny Day Real Estate Diary
*Dashboard Confessional Places You Have Come to Fear the Most
*Thursday Full Collapse
*Saves the Day Through Being Cool; I'm Sorry I'm Leaving
*Ataris End is Forever
*Penfold Our First Taste of Escape
*Gloria Record Start Here; A Lull in Traffic
*Fairweather If They Move...Kill Them
*New Found Glory Nothing Gold Can Stay
*Alkaline Trio Maybe I'll Catch Fire
*New Amsterdams Never You Mind
*Coheed and Cambria The Second Stage Turbine Blade
*Grade Under the Radar
*Knapsack This Conversation's Ending, Starting Right Now
*Poison the Well The Opposite of December; Tear from the Red
*Taking Back Sunday Tell All Your Friends
*From Autumn to Ashes Too Bad You're Beautiful
*Elliot False Cathedrals
*Reggie and the Full Effect Promotional Copy
*The Promise Ring [I]Nothing Feels Good[I]
*Juliana Theory Emotion is Dead; Understand This is a Dream
*Midtown Save the World, Lose the Girl
*Further Seems Forever The Moon is Down

These range from acoustic guitar to hardcore (but most if these fall in between) so there's bound to be something among these you like.
*lates*

I have a couple of his albums. Followed him since his days with the Best Kissers in the World. Seems like he went from "power/guitar-pop" to dark singer-songwriter pretty effortlessly.

I think I woke up screaming
I think I woke up screaming again"

and from another song called "Lies"

"Your soul a pit of stone
The depths I wish I could have known
Dangerous, black and full of spite
Thoughts of you still fill my night
But now we lay naked on the floor
I'm lost, I'm drowning in your soul
I was searching for some answer in your eyes
I find malicious laughter and a love that has died

You are haunting my reality
Your lies are the only truth that I believe
You are haunting my reality
Now everytime I think about you I die"
No offense, but those lyrics are pretty bad. They read like something an annoying, co-dependant 15 year old would write. I should know: I was once an annoying co-dependant 15 year old.

A few of the best break-up songs I've heard:
Everlong: Foo Fighters
Don't Reneg on Our Love: Richard and Linda Thompson
Green Eyes -or- Never Talking to You Again: Husker Du
The Freed Pig- Sebadoh (more about a band breaking up, but works well for a relationship)
Heart Full of Soul: The Yardbirds
All of this and Nothing: Psychedelic Furs
I Don't Believe in the Sun: Magnetic Fields
Dry Your Eyes: The Streets

I think both the Ramones and the Fiends recorded fitting songs called "I Don't Want You"

don't know if this was said yet but
Lonely Day-System of a Down-quite depressing but great song
And since you are in your anger phase throw eminem-KIM in the mix but it is a tad overboard
Now bleed bi.....as i said a bit crazy.....

Hmmm.... anger phase? I'd absolutely throw out "Rated U for Ugly" from the new Zebrahead CD "Broadcast to the World." I'm happily married and that one still makes me want to dump an old bitch I used to date again and mail her the lyrics.

I just noticed that this thread was bumped from 2002, so I certainly hope that he's over his anger stage.

Boyz II Men-End of the Road...... probably the number #1 song people associate with breaking up.

You're probably right.

I would also give a nod to "It's So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday" by Boyz II Men. I don't know the lyrics too well, but I believe it's about someone you love dying. However, it could probably work on the heartbreak angle, too.

Someone said it already, but it deserves repeating... pretty much the entire album of "Pretty Hate Machine" from NiN... so good, makes me almost wish my wife and I would get divorced!

If you're one of those people who think "I'm so sad I'm going to be angry!" then ignore my advice, but here is what got me through:

Anything by The Cure
Anything by The Smiths

Also, "Most Of The Time" by Bob Dylan. It's on "Oh Mercy"

Just FYI, I picked it up at the Warped Tour, they mentioned that it wasn't for sale in the US yet. I'm not sure when it will be, but it's a tremendous CD, on par with their last two for sure.

Can't believe no one has mentioned This Year's Model by Elvis Costello. Anger Phase double plus good.
