I guess I have to change my answer to "Boogie" by John Hartford.

I thought the "D" actually do a song called "Best Song Ever."
Maybe I'm wrong. But I swear I heard Jack and Kyle raging about their song-writing prowess.
They were of course wearing nothing but their underpants at the time. But I don't see how that matters.

"And the peculiar thing is this, my friends: the song we sang on that fateful night didn't actually sound anything like this song! This is just a tribute!"

Actually, on the Tenacious D TV show version of that song (and the bootleg version), they throw in a riff from Stairway to Heaven, alluding that it is the greatest song in the world.

They perform it that way live a lot too. Guess it depends on interpretation. It's just a brief little allusion to 'Stairway'. Not like I'll argue with them on their pick.

vh1 says it is satisfaction (i cant get no) from the rolling stones but mtv says it is yesterday from the beatles.
my choice however would be either kashmire from led zeppelin or wish you were here from pink floyd (if this was the bad song forum then it would be the incubus song of the same name.)
hey "Wag The Frog" dont feel bad, i enjoy them too. (no joke) but i prefer break stuff.

Stevie Ray Vaughan's version of "Little Wing".
To get the full effect put on some headphone turn off the lights and turn the volume up. You can hear the buzz from the amp and it's almost like he is in the room with you.

Many good choices, such as:
Sonic Youth - Teenage Riot (video is aces as well)
Sebadoh - The Freed Pig (Breeders did a swell cover of this)
The Cakekitchen - Crimson to Gunmetal (listen to this! now!!)
The Verlaines - Lying in State
...but in the end, it has to be...
Husker Du - Makes No Sense at All

A couple of notes here:
I'm glad that this thread is still living after a month. I'd like to keep this as a living thread.
When you think of the truly great songs, keep in mind the audience: everyone.
Keep the choices going,
I think my my favorites so far, besides my own:
Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star
Take Me to the River
A Day in the Life
Let The Sunshine In
Born To Run is a great song.....I am a Bruce fan, but it does not compare to the top few.
I am shocked at the number of songs that are not mentioned (Happy Birthday?). But I also like the sweet songs that I have gotten from MP3s from this thread.
In a week, I will replace my original post with my own interpretation of this thread. I will re-read this thread and listen to all of the songs presented, and narrow down the finalists from there.........fight for your song!
I would like to turn this into some sort of music aficionado contest. Ideas for judging and contests are welcome.
