Hank Williams Sr.
Rob Halford
Bruce Dickenson
Bob Dylan
Lennon
Mcartney
Jagger
George Jones
Merle Haggard
Johnny Cash
And so many more.
Some of these people listed may not have the best voices around but when they have something to say they sure know how to deliver it & to me thats what counts.
Dylan can actually make you feel sorry for poor old Hattie carroll, while Johnny will actuall make you think your riding a train around America.

Gram Parsons
Louis Armstrong

Rhett Miller (Old 97's)
Frank Sinatra
Prince (I suppose that the "male" aspect is up for debate)
Shawn Smith (Brad/Satchel/Pidgeonhed)
James Brown
Marvin Gaye
John Bell (Widespread Panic...most would disagree, but he's got quite a bit of soul in his voice for some guy in a southern rock/jamband)

Edit...damn right, I'm a Gold member!

In no particular order:

Brian McKnight
Bono
Martin Nievera
Chris Cornell

I don't think Sting is (or one of) the best.

I love seeing all the votes for billy joel. He needs to get up off his drunken ass and make a new album. Screw retirement. Christie is gone. Move on with your life.

Also like seeing Geoff Tate on here. Gotta add James LaBrie. You have to like soprano though.

Astrid Van DerVeen - Beautiful voice. Voice of an angel.

I agree. He needs to do that. I love Billy Joel, a new studio album by him would be great.

Scorpio - um, no I'm not kidding. He a good voice, but what was so grand about it? I guess for his genre of music, sure. But to me he sounded like Dean Martin. And in recent years, we have a very similar sounding Harry Connick Jr. Frankie Boy opened a lot of peoples eyes since his time, to a different style of music. But best voice ever? He is far below the levels of the people I mentioned for the top - Tate and Mercury did opera and both had incredible range. Brian McKnight may have the best R & B voice ever - possibly unmatched range and power. With Freddie, not only could you get Rock, but you got great ballads, unique style, and a lot of emotion.

BuckeyeDawg,

While I can totally see Freddie Mercury being up at the top, I'll just have to agree to disagree with you about Frank. He took a song and made it his own, making you believe the story he is telling. He is the very definition of what I think a singer is, and for me, to merely call Frank a singer is akin to blasphemey. Obviously, I am a huge Frank fan and feel called upon to defend his name. As for Geoff Tate, I've not heard him do opera and cannot comment on him, but based soley on Queensryche material, I would not place him there. And while Brian McKnight does indeed have a fine voice, I don't feel he is on par with Frank.

[ForrestGump]And that's all I've got to say about that.[/ForrestGump]
