In my youth, U2s Achtung Baby would help me sustain a good funk.

The Valley of Strathemore by Silly Wizard.

If you have never heard this and want to be depressed you need to listen to it.

Like the previous people above....

1) Anything by Morrissey!
2) Most of anything by the Smiths!

Notice a common factor there....ahem, maybe Morrissey!

It all depends on the type of depression and the subject matter of the song for me. If the two go hand in hand, I get dragged down deeper.

Some stuff that will get me pretty much every time (and has yet to be mentioned):

Bill Withers - Ain't No Sunshine

Sam Cooke - A Change is Gonna Come

The Cure - Disintegration (song and album)

BTW, I don't really find the Swans to be depressing, either. Definitely dark, but not depressing.

Gerald Collier's whole album I Had To Laugh Like Hell is a real bummer. I love it, though.

this one isn't a new song, but i think beethoven's moonlight sonata is the most depressing song i've ever heard. especially done in b-minor.

Wow.. good topic.

Lets see... Something I can never have - NIN.

I once had that song on repeat for 4 hours one night. Was a very bad night for me. Lets just say that I never want to feel that depressed again.

Losing my religion - Tori Amos. Very haunting and depressing cover on the Higher Education soundtrack.

Plus lots of stuff already mentioned.

The Cure's Disintrigration album fits depression nicely. Also a couple songs on Wish.

Overjoyed by Stevie Wonder always gets me down, despite its cheerful title.

Songs to be depressed to?

Does anyone have any good ones? The only two I can think of are:

Circle of Friends, Edie Brickell
Everybody Hurts, REM

Big Star - "Holocaust" (man, I could hit the lottery and still contemplate suicide after hearing that one!)

Bob Dylan - "If You See Her, Say Hello" (for those pining for their ex, as I've been known to do from time to time)

John Lennon - "Watching the Wheels" (every time I hear it, it just reminds me of how quickly his life was cut short after recording this)

Beach Boys - "Till I Die" (sounds like Brian Wilson's farewell to the world, in a sense)

Richard Thompson - "Whithered and Died" ('nuff said)

-edit to add-

Wow, how could I forget...

Replacements - "Here Comes a Regular"
Love - "Signed D.C."

In my opinion there is no better music to be depressed to than just about anything off the first two Hayden records, Everything I Long For and The Closer I Get. Some really great depressing songs:

Bad as they Seem-about pining for local girls and their moms while living with your parents

Skates-about a guy who can't swim buying a pair of ice skates so he can go looking for his wife in the stream she drowned in once it freezes over

when this is over-a song from the point of view of one of susan smith's kids

And many more!
