Protected or defective mp3?

I downloaded several songs from Morpheus that were all from the same album. All of them have no sound. My first thought was that they were some new "protected" songs. Does that sound right, or did the person who ripped them maybe do something wrong?

could just be done wrong - the first albums I ripped I didn't know how to do it right and ended up with blank files
