Depeche Mode.

No other group comes close.

I can't think of another band that was under as much critical fire but still managed to win fans in droves all the while championing synthpop - a genre that has never been taken seriously.

Iron Maiden would be my next pick though.

The Clash (the only band that matters)

of course, the smiths, the cure, new order, depeche mode, guns n roses, living color ... and the list goes on ... are all responsible for changing music

I think Depeche Mode defines the 1980's for me. I"d also put INXS right up there in the running.

If we're talking heavy metal instead of 80's electronic, I'd have to say either Metallica, Motley Crue, or Guns and Roses.

I really liked Skid Row, but overall I would say Guns-N-Roses.

The Pixies - A little over-rated, but it is impressive that they were doing what they were doing while people were rocking their mullets off to late eighties rock

The Cars - Great pop, but they were actually better in the late 70's

NWA -

I'm surprised I'm not seeing Faith No More being "nominated" yet. Perhaps its because the first album of theirs (in my mind) that had any influence was The Real Thing was released in 1989.

So perhaps they were more a band of the 90's.

Laff...I guess in reality I'm thinking mainly of Mike Patton, the band's singer from Real Thing until the last album they put out. He's sort of (don't destroy me for making this statement, its only a "sort of") the Frank Zappa of the metal world. With so many on going projects at the same time in so many different genres, the guy refuses to be pinned down to one musical/vocal style.

Duran Duran, without a doubt.

It's interesting that so many have mentioned names like G n R, Metallica, etc. When I think of the 80's I think of Duran, Depeche Mode, The smiths, echo & the bunneymen and other british bands. Bands that were popular in the second half of the 80's just never come to mind, as if it's an entirely different generation of music.

Maybe it has to do with the fact that I graduated from HS in 1985. '85 RULES! The Wedding Singer is set in 1985 and perfectly captures life in the days of big hair and shoulder pads.

Duran Duran and the Police

Duran Duran's music really has stood the test of time, much better than the drivel current day boy bands churn out
