Songs that stop you in your tracks.

I think the most wonderful thing about music is how it can just emotionally connect with you, either lyrically, musical, and sometimes even spiritually.

What songs freeze you in your tracks and why?

Personally Limelight by Rush always locks me into place, it is something in that almost dreamy guitar riff during the chorus.

Metallica's version of Whisky in the Jar freezes me for other reasons.

What songs have that effect on you?

Good question...

There are a lot of songs that stop me dead but here are a couple that really get me.

New Favorite - Alison Krauss
Tupelo Honey - Cassandra Wilson
Blue in Green - Miles Davis
Drifting - Jimi Hendrix
I Believe (When I fall in Love) - Stevie Wonder

Recently there's been a few songs that have really affected me emotionally... the lyrics speak volumes about love lost, love needed and love betrayed...

Joee - I Don't Believe You
Roger Sanchez - Another Chance
The Skydiggers - I Will Give You Everything

The one song that almost made me burst out into tears recently however, was:

Sylver - Turn The Tide

All of the emotions and feelings I have for my ex are just perfectly emoted through the lyrics on this track. Everything that I've wanted to say is there...

Sigh!

Jimi Hendrix: Little Wing
Stevie Ray Vaughan: The Sky is Crying
Beethoven Symphony No. 9, Choral movement
Randy Rhoads: Dee
...all make me remember people I (we)'ve lost

Queensryche: The Needle Lies (was playing when I heard my grandfather passed away back in 93)

come to think of it...this is a depressing list

Might sound a bit corny, but "Unchained Melody" by the Righteous Brothers.

I hate to say it, but "Shimmer" by Fuel. It came along at just the right time and involved a woman who will forever be the woman closest to my heart after my wife. I haven't spoken to her in over three years.

to bring up a small artist that i mentioned in another thread:

Mason Jennings "Ballad for My One True Love"

mason jennings website

if you like bob dylan and dave matthews, you absolutely must check this guy out. he has a new album coming out next year and i am very anxious.. i also moved from MN (where he is based) to CA (where he never comes, even though he has two songs titled "California" - pts. 1 and 2, respectively), so i miss seeing him perform.

if you're taking my word for it, start with the second album "Birds Flying Away".

Well, as long as it is understood that these songs change frequently for me, the current song is "Man of Constant Sorrow" by the Soggy Bottom Boys. I just saw the movie O' Brother last week and have been playing this song a lot.

When I read the title to this thread I immediately thought of Elaine's boyfriend on an episode of Seinfeld who made her stop talking and had to stop everything when Desperado by the Eagles came on the radio.

Anyone remember that?

I know, who cares?!

Too funny! As a major Seinfeld fan I'm ashamed to admit I never put two and two together!

Cheers!

"Crazy Life" -- Toad the wet Sprocket
"Buckets of Rain" -- Bob Dylan

What a great topic!! I wish I could think of more, but I can't right now. There's gotta be dozens though that each time I hear them, I can concentrate on nothing else.

Wow, me too. For me it's a similar situation, but there was never a romantic relationship with this guy(or romantic feelings, for that matter). It was, instead, a very close friendship, and he was graduating from college and moving away at the end of that semester.

others that have gotten me through the years include:

"Fade into You"- Mazzy Star
"One by One"- Wilco
"Ladies and Gentlemen we are Floating in Space"- Spiritualized
"Run"- Collective Soul
"A Day in the Life" - Beatles
"Hymn"- Jars of Clay
"Love is on the Way"- Saigon Kick (SHUTUP!!!!!!!! )

I know there are many, many more, but those are a few that just came to mind.

I would have to say "Kite" by U2 and "In The Arms Of Sleep" by Smashing Pumpkins
