Europeans Miffed New CD Won't Play

By RON HARRIS
Associated Press Writer

Call it the Imbruglia imbroglio.

The latest CD from Natalie Imbruglia, the coquettish Australian pop star, won't play in some CD and DVD players because of copy protection technology included on the disc.

That has prompted a spate of complaints to Imbruglia's record label, Bertelsmann Music Group, which has set up a toll-free phone hotline to deal with the fallout over the CD "White Lilies Island," released Nov. 5 in Europe.

The album has not yet been released in the United States.

"We always are concerned if something is not playable on a CD player," said BMG spokeswoman Regine Hofmann, who said the company has received complaints from about one customer for every 1,000 CDs shipped.

Hofmann would not give a number of total Imbruglia CDs shipped.

The blemish on the Imbruglia CD rollout would not detour BMG from using copy protection on future CDs, Hofmann said.

Designed to prevent consumers from pirating music or distributing copyright material freely on the Internet, music labels have in recent months begun to introduce so-called digital rights management technology, mostly in Europe.

Hofmann said that although BMG considers protected CDs still to be preliminary, "the testing phase is proceeding in a way that we want to pursue it."

Imbruglia's CD contains technology called Cactus Data Shield, developed by Tel Aviv-based Midbar Tech Ltd.

Midbar's CD copy protection also was included on 10,000 CDs Sony released in the Czech Republic and Slovakia late last year.

There are several variations of the company's copy protection, including versions that permit tracks from a CD to be copied to a computer for listening but not moved to another PC or shared online.

Some people who purchased the Imbruglia CD complained the disc would not play in their PCs or Sony PlayStation2 consoles, Hofmann said.

Others voiced their complaints on Imbruglia's official Web site. One person said the CD prevented him from playing the disc on his computer running the Linux operating system.

Another person posted a message indicating that the CD would not work in some older stereo systems and does not function in DVD players with audio CD capabilities.

The Imbruglia CD also does not allow consumers to convert its song tracks into MP3 files, a compressed digital version of the disc's original audio file tracks.

Universal, Warner, EMI, BMG and Sony all are exploring technologies that will limit the digital duplication of CDs.

I'd be irritated if it could play myself.

There is at least one site dedicated to this phenomenon: link

When will these stupid recording companies learn?
MP3 IS a right, not a privilege. I never agree with the idea of industries telling me what I can or cannot do with the product I purchase.

That is just ridiculous. Well, I hope they don't have the protection on it when I get it, because I will be wanting to put it on my harddrive.

It's been on the internet since the first week of September because I didn't even know she had a new album at that time.
I didn't care much for the first one but this one is quite good in my opinion.

They also said Creed would be a big copy-protected deal and it was on the net a week before the album out.

F**k em'.

She really is a talented singer. I'm not sure how many of the songs are her own, but I like how she sings him. Those that Billy Corgan wrote are beautiful. Unlike Britney Spears, the ones that she does write are actually really good.

Does anybody know how much of the new album she wrote?

i dont know which she wrote and which she didnt, but you might want to check out ednaswap - torn

they originally wrote and recorded the song, and they do it much different, but its better in some ways, or its less poppy at least

also, for some reason, ann preven (girl in ednaswap who wrote it) hates natalie because she got popular off their song. i dont know why they sold it to her then if they were gonna get mad about it.

Wow, that's a shame. It's a great album and its sales will be hurt because of the stupidity of the record labels.

Sorry to go offtopic, but isn't that really just a shot at Britney Spears? Do you really like ANY of her songs? Even the ones she doesn't write?

I don't know about that. If it weren't for this copy protection thing, I probably wouldn't even know she has a new album out. I remember her from a few years back, but I'd bet that a lot of people in the States don't.

Hmm ... that's a different way of thinking of it. U.S. sales may go up, but I have a feeling it will deter quite a few in Europe. Then again, I'm not sure how much media attention this is getting. It's sure to inform some people of her new album.
