Canadian Music Scene...Please update me on it...

I'm transplanted to the US and I REALLY miss the Canadian Music scene, and down here we don;t hear diddley about it. Can any other Canucks enlighten me to it?

You know, what the bands are doing (the hip, Sarah, any other good ones)....

The Hip's last album, IMO, has subpar to
some of their stuff but it sold like HOT CAKES. . .
Music At Work was the best track off of it.
Rumour hits disc on the way.

Alanis has a new album coming out this month.
If you go to her website and fit her 30 things
she wants in a man she will go out to dinner
with you. . .so she says.

Tom Cochran started a revise with Red Rider
but it went nowhere and now he is touring
solo again, pumping out Life Is A Highway
every second song I believe.

The Barenaked Ladies just released a
Greatest Hits disc and continue to
excell over in the States and now in
Eruope.

Crash Test Dummies crashed. Their
last two albums were bombs.

The Pursuit Of Happiness broke up.

Sarah just announced she is pregnant,
and has put her new studio album on hold.
She also released a documentary on
Lilith Fair called Lilith on Top which
first aid at the Toronto Internation Film Fest
to a packed house (I was there and it was
great).

Cline Dion, do you really care?

Moist just came out with a new album and
David Usher had a solo one this summer.

The Tea Party is doing great and is still
milking their last disc which gets much
Canadian airplay.

Roxy Music went back on tour

I Mother Earth seems to fading with
Our Lady Peace. I hope not as these
bands were great.

Does anyone still remember the Odds?

Great Big Sea is working on some
new stuff and planing a tour for
the summer, last I heard.

Kim Mitchell still plays small clubs
for like 15 bucks a pop.

Bryan Adams released ANOTHER
hits disc with, strangly, some of the
stuff that was on the old hits disc
and a few tracks off 18 Till I Die.

Blue Rodeo is touring again and
just released a hits disc.

They just released some of Shania
Twains old stuff, before she got big.

Hummm. . .anyone else you got in mind?

Why do you miss it? There is so much more to choose from down in the states. Besides some underground music and hip hop acts, there aint much good up here.

My brother got me this last year, I don't mind it one bit. I actually kinda like it.

Hmmmm.... I'll have to check that one out... I'm sure I will have at least 2 of those things.

I lost him after the Victory Day CD

We hear the BNL all the time, so that's cool.

That's cool, I guess chances of seeing her soon are out of the question though...that's too bad.

Cline Dion, do you really care?

Nope.

Moist just came out with a new album and

ugh.

The Tea Party is doing great and is still
milking their last disc which gets much
Canadian airplay.

I haven't listened to them since Edgefest about 4 years ago... but I still have the first two discs in rotation.

Roxy Music went back on tour

Who?

I Mother Earth seems to fading with
Our Lady Peace. I hope not as these
bands were great.

I mother earth was good with Edwin, he sucks solo now though IMO... and OLP I haven't liked since Clumsy.

Does anyone still remember the Odds?

Yeah, they were great, and friends of the Kids in the Hall

Great Big Sea is working on some
new stuff and planing a tour for
the summer, last I heard.

I AM A WILD PARTY!!

Bryan Adams released ANOTHER

Double Ugh.

HMMM... one band i REALLY dig is the Gandharvas, but as far as I know they are gone. Which is too bad because they rocked.

Not really sure, are there any newer bands that are worth listening too up there?

Thanks for the entensive list! That was great.

Not really, up there, there is SO much more choice, because the radio has no choice but to play some Canadian music. Down here it's the same all the time. And everything you can listen to down here you can get up there, but not vice-versa.

Unfortunately radio airplay is usually
limited to the songs that are hits
in the US. . .

I can't tell you how many times I hear
BNL's One Week each week.

But the Canadian Brodcasting Federation or what ever, mandates that a certain percentage of music is Canadian content. And here we get only the hits, like the BNL... not only on the radio, but in a Mitubishi car add too....

Which is why Canadian radio is far more superior to the local ones (at least where I live).

I don't listen to the radio unless it's college stations or classical.

Gee, how could you forget the new Amanda Marshall disc?

Though now that you mention it, I cannot think of one new Canadian band I'm excited about. Other than the bands listed here, the only ones getting any airplay/attention are the boy bands like B4-4 or SoulDecision, or the "angry-rock" bands like Project Wyze. Then to fill in the space, you hear something about the Guess Who every once in a while. I never really thought about how stagnant it is for new bands up here until I read this thread.

That said - locally, there's still the odd thing to get excited about. I just don't expect most of these bands to ever be signed.

And where's the Loverboy update?

Very disappointed.

My manager pointed out that I forgot Nickelback and Nelly Furtado. Both Canadian acts getting a ton of attention in the US.

Cowboy Junkies released a CD a few months ago, but I never heard another peep out of it. I hear they're close to calling it quits, but that's purely a rumor. I saw them over the summer and I was extremely underwhelmed. Margo Timmins looked bored of being on stage.

Jann Arden released a hits CD this month.

Here's some Canadian bands I have enjoyed at one time or another (and most I still do, but some are now defunct):

Furnace Face
Dayglo Abortions
SNFU
Ghetto Concept
Checkmate
Choclair
Kardinal Offishall
Rascalz
Urban Legends
Skin Barn
Forbidden Dimension

I believe that versions of April Wine and Saga still perform from time to time but have no clue as to upcoming releases! A good all-inclusive "BEST OF" would be nice - I know they each have one or two out but some of this stuff is deleted/hard to find and well thought-out retrospectives can be cool, IMO.

Do any of you guys recall
Moxy Fruvous?

They had a great debut
album with Video Barginville
and then faded slowly.

I was lucky to work on a few
music videos with these guys
and they are rather funny
although I believe that they
broke up earlier this year.

Yes, they did break up earlier this year. I think they ended up with 7 or 8 CD's before they were done.

I've seen Gian Ghomeshi (sp?), formerly of Moxy Fruvis, two times in the last five months and enjoyed it quite a bit, although he is a bit self righteous. He also has his own lable, but I'm not sure if he has a distribution deal for it.

One of his label mates is, in my opinion, pure genius. Martina Sorbara is great and her second album, The Cure for Bad Deeds, is real genius. I wish some major would pick her up so she has a chance.

Moxy F. is a really fun band. I think they have quite a few wonderful songs. Anyone would love king of spain; also, cathedrals is a good song.

I think my fav. tune by
these guys would have
to either be Stuck in the 90s
or The Drinking song. I have
yet to hear any of their other
stuff besides Video Barginville.
When I was talking to them on
set they said that they didn't believe
that to be their best work. You guys have
any tips on what else to check out.

Thanks,

V

I quite like Front and Centre, but they're an obscure band even by Canadian standards. Sound a bit like Erasure.
