Ooooooh. Seventeen knows how a 13 year old kid should 'dress emo'. I can't use any other word to describe that article other than 'obnoxious'.

And those bands are borderline pop. And they suck.

EDIT: Except Jimmy Eat World, who's older stuff is great, and newer stuff is alright.

That article is absolutely disgusting. I never really check in on the music scene...but that's just...man. I hope I don't see a bunch of kids trying to act emo. The weird thing is that bands like SDRE and Mineral were making "emo" music in 1996-1997. Why in the world do people think this is a "new" thing?

I hate scenes. Why do people think they have to have a gimmic?

Ah yes, back in the "old days" pre '96... before electricity, sliced bread, and emo.

Unfortunately, someday 5-6 years won't seem a lifetime to you.

I know alot of people that like emo - but I never saw the point.

Maybe I just haven't heard the 'good' emo yet.

What I've heard has been these trite little songs about annoying teenage crap.

Can anyone tell me the 'best' emo band and album?

Maybe I haven't been fair, but what I've heard has been garbage.

LOL...In my opinion there is no such thing as good emo...My friend has gotten into the emo scene and all the music is indistinguishable...Moaning and groaning about 17 year old girls..pure b.s...

I thought that article in Seventeen was a kick. A friend of mine brought into work and her and I had a laugh at it. Emo kids make me laugh.

I guess these would all be considered "emo":

Alkaline Trio - Maybe I'll Catch Fire
Planes Mistaken For Stars - F_ck With Fire
hopesfall - No Wings To Speak Of
skycamefalling - 10.21

These next albums are more metal, but have corny, melodramatic emo lyrics (which is most of the appeal of them to me.)

From Autumn To Ashes - Too Bad You're Beautiful
the Hope Conspiracy - File 03
Poison The Well - Distance Makes The Heart Grow Fonder
Shai Hulud - Hearts Once Nourished With Hope & Compassion

You'll notice the words "fire", "stars" and "sky" mentioned a lot for some reason with emo bands.

I dunno, I like a lot of bands that are labeled "emo", but I'm not into the scene, nor does the music constitute most of my collection. I like Thursday, Dashboard Confessional, and Jimmy Eat World (all mentioned in that 17 magazine).

I don't really buy "genres". I buy music I like by bands I like. Actually, I didn't even know that Thursday & JEW were considered emo until I saw that article. I only knew DC was considered emo after I bought the albums.

I never got into the Get Up Kids, though I think they're alright. Saves the Day is better in my opinion.

I agree though that a lot of the music is indisquishable. I prefer to have at least some diversity in my music collection.

If you like some of the harder stuff, I guess Taking Back Sunday would be considered emo... they're pretty cool. Along the lines of Thursday or Finch.

Is New Found Glory considered emo? Cause I like them too.

From the bands Nosebleed mentioned, I like Alkaline Trio and From Autumn to Ashes, but don't own any of their albums.

Don't forget about "emo-hop", spearheaded by Slug of Atmosphere.

I'd say that one of the actually "good" emo bands is Appleseed Cast. They've got a two volume cd set that is really good. Of course, part of why it is good is because it focuses more on pop then on emo. So...

I also enjoy SDRE's music and Mineral - The Power of Failing.

Appleseed Cast I thought was...meh. Kinda lame. One new (to me) band I like is Last Days Of April and their Ascend To The Stars album. I'd never heard of them before but a skinhead friend gave me a promo copy 'cus he works at a record store and doesn't like that stuff. Kinda reminded me of wimpier JEW mixed with Get Up Kids sounding vocals.

Dodging Cars, you might like hopesfall. They're a CHRISTIAN band. If you wanna check them out you can check my FTP. Grab the song called The End Of An Era.

Cool. Hopefully I'll remember to do that on Monday when I'm at work with my fast connection.

The words "hardcore" and "Dashboard Confessional" should never be placed in close proximity to one another.

well i havent seen The Ataris mentioned yet, and I think they can be classified as emo (and I actually like them).

They're pretty far from whining little girls like New Found Glory

and they have a song called "Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, B, A, Start" which is a plus in my book

Has anyone been to a Dashboard Confessional show? I went to one and there was a huge group of teen girls crying and hanging onto the guy's every word.

I've been to two and haven't witnessed that yet. Most people were just singing along and having a good time. Including myself.

One of my friends went to the Dallas concert at The Door in September. He said that there was a group of cryers, however, the best was that Chris yelled out "THIS IS PUNK ROCK!!!" in a very serious (not joking) context.

Obviously the dude doesn't know much about music.

Emo is just suppose to be emotional punk and Weezer has been called emo simply because they made "Pinkerton" which features Rivers at his most raw, causing him to feel like a bullet is going threw his heart in every track but not an instant death but a slow painful memory that you wish you can change, but you never will. "Pinkerton" is the definition of emo because it as emotional as you can get without suicide, simple but precise and piercing lyrics, and is my all-time favorite album.

And people trashing Seventeen, at least they trying to promote better music than bubblegum producer pop. Let the kids listen to something new, we all had to start somewhere. You weren't always cool. Then again, that article is still pretty funny.
