I know music and film are art. but I still enjoy listening to music and consider it "fun" and entertaining. I still watch movies to be entertained. But I do appreciate the art of music and film

like it or not, music and film are art. they should be challenging. And anyone who just listens to music for fun or escapism doesn't understand the point of art. they shouldn't be expected to be taken seriously when they discuss these things.

I'm tired of this de-intellectualization of society. Everything is dumbed down to the lowest denominator, and I'm sure a lot of other people feel the same way. If you don't want to be challenged [not you specifically, but the collective 'you'], then you're either too stupid or you're too lazy.

For what it is worth, I do indeed know that some music and some movies are art. That is fine and I respect that a great deal. My favorite music act is Tool, which are considered to be one of the very few bands that care about their music as art, which is why I love them and respect all the effort they put into every detail of their work. BUT I also know that alot of music out today is not intended to be ART, just fun music that doesnt require much thinking. Why is this bad? Not everything in life has to be so serious all the time. If this makes me, as you so wonderfully put "too stupid or too lazy", then so be it. The times we are living in right now, I find nothing wrong with watching a "mindless fun" kind of movie every once in awhile. You really need to lighten up man, calling people in this thread stupid or lazy just makes YOU seem ignorant.

yep... I'm a snob.

I forgot that we have to tiptoe around and accept everyone's opinions as valid. I mean, after all what do people who devote their lives to studying music theory and criticism know? Their opinions are only equal to the average clown who listens to mainstream radio and knows of no other artists outside of TRL.

But those people would say that all rock music is trash. They would only see superficial differences between Britney Spears and TOOL, and would think that both are equally simplistic and driven more by popular trends and the pursuit of profit.

I agree and they're probably right.

Look, I'm not trying to say that I'm not guilty of listening to music or watching a movie that's below what I expect of myself.

But I'm also aware that there has to be some aesthetic standards for art, and I'm still learning what those are.... Who knows, I may never know. But it is fun trying out new things and challenging myself to appreciate things other than what was drilled into my brain by popular culture.

Just last weekend, I purchased some Robert Johnson records at a second hand record stores. The man is supposed to be the most gifted bluesman ever, and I've never heard a single note he played. It's amazing stuff, and I'm glad that I exposed myself to it.

SnoopDogg 10-06-01 06:48 PM

My favorite song this year was Dressed to Kill by New Found Glory.

Also Outkast - So Fresh and So Clean (Remix) w/ Snoop Doggy Dogg.

Drexl 10-06-01 08:08 PM

"Clint Eastwood" by Gorillaz

Burnt Alive 10-06-01 10:37 PM

"Dollskin" by Toadies

Honorable mention to

"Ghost Shark" by Rocket From The Crypt

I love the original as well. The orignal and Remix are so differnt thought, and putting SnoopDogg in it makes it aok in my book :)

For what's on the radio - "It's Been Awhile" - Staind

For what's not on it, probably Tool's "Parabol" + "Parabola" combination, if that's allowed :D

Tool-Parabola

Has that classis rock guitar opening. Also offers a very interesting opinion on our physical existence. I could also be convicnced that The Grudge deserves this honor too!

It's really going to depend on your personal tastes.

I like New Order's "Crystal". Then again, I'm just happy to hear anything new from them after so many years (~7).

Although this song was officially released in 2000 - it's spent most of the year in my disc player.

"Roseability" by Idlewild

grunter or whomever, can you post some other good Idlewild songs, I've always meant to check them out. Thanks. (of course I only download to sample, not to rip the bands off.)
