Untitled Super Mario Bros. Movie Sequel - April 3 2026

Confirmed by Nintendo via X/Twitter today (Mario Day).

I can’t get the link to work but there’s a video confirmation with Miyamoto.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie (2026, D: Horvath/Jelenic) -- S: OG Cast & more

This is to be the tent pole of the 40th Anniversary of Super Mario Brothers.

It’s confirmation that arrives after rumors swept the internet yesterday, revealing that Nintendo will indeed be partnering up with the Minions movie studio yet again to create a movie adaptation of the classic 2007 Wii platformer. It’s slated to arrive in the U.S. April 3, 2026, and in Japan April 24, 2026, with its first trailer revealing a small amount of footage before showing off its official title and logo.

Today's announcement also revealed some of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie's cast. It's a lineup that focuses on returning names that shouldn't come as too much of a surprise, with Chris Pratt back as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy back as Princess Peach, Charlie Day back as Luigi, Jack Black back as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key back as Toad, and Kevin Michael Richardson back as Kamek.

Of course, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has a lot of potential for newcomers to the cast, too. Who will play Rosalina is likely the question on the minds of most fans, as the storytelling icon first made her debut in the original 2007 game but didn't show up for The Super Mario Bros. Movie. The last film also teased a potential appearance from Yoshi, though it's unclear if Mario's dinosaur companion will have any speaking lines when or if he eventually appears.

I thoroughly enjoyed the first movie so I'm totally in for this one. Not going to bother watching the trailer, I'm in.

Having never played SMG, I have zero attachment to Princess Rosalina or Bowser Jr. (what happened to his kids from SMB3?). The trailer did nothing for me.

I purchased the first one blind, remember enjoying it, but have a hard time remembering much about it. I do remember not liking Bowser being in love with Princess Peach. Sad to see that carry over here.

It was weird that the Nintendo Direct presentation mentioned Benny Safdie as if he were some household name. I had to look him up. Apparently he was in Oppenheimer. That's the only thing in his short filmography that I've seen.

My two youngest sons LOVE the first one. It’s my 6 year old’s favorite movie. The first one looked fantastic and this one looks just as good, if not better.

We’ll probably make a trip to the theater with the whole family to watch this one and I have no doubt this one will play on a loop in my house once it’s available on streaming.

Same. The kids from SMB3 might have been enough to get me in the theater for this but found the first as empty an experience as I've ever had in a movie so will probably pass. Maybe on streaming at some point if I hear it's better than the first.

He's pretty well known as half a filmmaking duo with his brother. They made a few films together, most notably Uncut Gems. He directed The Smashing Machine earlier this year and made the Showtime TV series The Curse last year. He also appears in the last PTA film Licorice Pizza.

Now I'm just imagining Jack Black in full-energy Jack Black hype mode being like "Bowser Jr. is being played by...some guy RocShemp has never heard of!"

I didn't love the first movie (purchased the UHD BD blind and only watched it once), but I will likely check this out. That being said, I am more interested in the score, as it will feature music unfamiliar to me (my last full Mario game was Super Mario World 2).

I weirdly feel nothing toward the newer trailers on this one way or another.

It doesn't look bad by any means, but it just kind of seems like an extended game story sequence.

Can't wait. Got my tickets for Dolby Digital on the first. Hoping they'll still have the Yoshi bucket.

I am guessing it will be no better/worse than the first movie. I purchased the disc blind, enjoyed it, but never watched it again. I am expecting the same experience here.

On the other hand, I feel compelled to turn on the Bob Hoskins and Dennis Hopper one once in a while.

That production is crazy. Oscar winners. Gigantic sets. Fever dream plot.

... and John Leguizamo.

My girlfriend took me to see it in the theater for my birthday... and as much as I was a fan, I thought about walking out. So bad. But it's campy fun now.

I'm at my usual AMC tonight and they already have the Yoshi bucket for sale 😵‍💫
Had to go ahead and get it.

I have to explore why this happens. I just watched Dead Heat for the first time and was like “how have I never heard of this gem”. Some movies work better in a different era.

Reviews rolling in. Disastrous 35 score on Metacritic
And ugly 45% on Rotten Tomatoes

Won't hurt the first weekend much, I expect, but will probably mean smaller gross than the first film.
