It must really suck to be a Sony executive tied to this movie right now. Apparently the deal they brokered with Netflix is such that little to no money the film makes in its limited theatrical run goes to Sony. But to further rub salt in the wound, the executives at Sony Music passed on the soundtrack for this movie and it is now in the hands of one of their chief rivals, Universal Music Group. Pretty much every track in the soundtrack is currently a chart topper.

Yeah, they couldn't have mismanaged the release of this film more than they did.
I'm having little kids in my office ask for KPop Demon Hunters stickers when I offer them Bluey or Barbie stickers. I have to tell them - they didn't make any.

And here's the story of the actual Netflix deal.

Sheesh. That really sucks. This should've been a marketing juggernaut for them.Originally Posted by Decker

And I'm stuck with a bunch of Elio stickers nobody wants.
Hell, I still have a box of Soul stickers from the pandemic.

I’m not into Anime at all, but with all the hype surrounding this, I’m finally watching it on Netflix tonight.
Also, I noticed the Sing a Long edition is having a limited theater run this weekend in my area.

Okay I just finished it, That was actually really really good. The songs were really catchy, especially the last one.
I would love to see this in a theater for the sing a long edition in a packed theater. But unfortunately I won’t have time this weekend.

Those videos about Sony dropping the ball on this one are interesting. I suppose the studios have been in the habit of handing over ‘risky’ titles to Netflix for so long now that it was inevitable that one of them was going to lead to huge regrets. In terms of the visibility of the K-wave arguably being at its peak (although one of the videos makes it sound like it’s a more recent phenomenon that it really is, since it’s been building pretty relentlessly since 1999, and even moreso since circa 2012 or so), it certainly should’ve been a no-brainer. Part of me wonders if it would’ve gained the same pop culture traction from a theatrical release by Sony that it did from streaming instantly to a much wider global audience on Netflix. As per Decker’s tales of his sticker woes, I think Netflix also kinda dropped the ball in not merchandising the shit out of it beforehand. It’s almost like they weren’t entirely certain of its potential either, and the price they paid for it is in league with what they’ve paid for many other films, castoffs, festival pickups, etc.. Had Sony had any faith in it, they probably would’ve set up countless merchandising deals ahead of the release just to be safe, which they’ve done with a lot of their animated films. Sounds like they may get that chance with the sequel.

I have doubts it would have been anywhere near as big as an initial theatrical release. I think things worked out as well as they could of for the franchise.
It should do extremely well this weekend (theatrically)

I think you just never know what is going to strike a chord with the general public but one thing that I think executives are missing is that the K-Pop genre is extremely popular.

It doesn’t help that the movie is legitimately good. If they were smart, they would have pushed that it was from the studio who brought you the animated Spider-man movies. They are very similar in tone and style.

Same thing with Stranger Things. While there's way, way, way too much ST merch now, the first season was dry as a bone! You had to buy a bootleg t-shirt, if you wanted one. They just didn't see it coming.

Fuck it. I booked a ticket to see the Sing-A-Long edition Sunday at 2pm
and I got the last seat available for that showing. Holy shit, this is going to be crazy.
I was actually going to see something else, but I had to do it. I'm all about experiences.

I’m in the theater right now with my 16yo son and 19yo daughter and their friends waiting for the show to start.Originally Posted by DJariya

This is a local chain, so they didn’t have any special buckets and cups. I was hoping for one.
And this showing (1:30pn) is almost sold out but I don’t expect it to be crazy.

I really wish there were showings here in PR. I would've purchased a ticket and would probably bring my sister and her friends along. Oh well.

EDIT: I tried inviting my sister (she loves this flick) but she's got a big class presentation she's working on, so she can't go.

Watched this last night with my wife and sister-in-law. Pretty fun movie. I’m not one for K-pop but I had heard it’s a fun movie, and I’d say it lives up. For me it’s probably better that it landed on Netflix because I was more willing to give it a chance.

Just got back. It was full house of mostly families. Anyway, I had a good and this movie looked great on the big screen. The animation is gorgeous. And the songs are great. So catchy. I think people started to open up more in the finale when “This is what it sounds like” played.
