Superman (2025, D: Gunn) -- The Spoiler-Filled Reviews Thread

“Superman,” DC Studios’ first feature film to hit the big screen, is set to soar into theaters worldwide this summer from Warner Bros. Pictures. In his signature style, James Gunn takes on the original superhero in the newly imagined DC universe with a singular blend of epic action, humor and heart, delivering a Superman who’s driven by compassion and an inherent belief in the goodness of humankind.

DC Studios heads Peter Safran and Gunn are producing the film, which Gunn directs from his own screenplay, based on characters from DC, Superman created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster.

RT score and Metacritic score have been updated as of today 7/8/25

I'm sure it will adjust after more reviews come in, but you get a good idea.

And it has been confirmed there are 2 extra scenes. One mid-credits and one post-credits.

Snarky Jay loved Corenswet as Superman and most of the cast, but found the movie frustratingly mediocre. First half of her review is spoiler free, then she goes into a full plot breakdown.

Re: Superman (2025, D: Gunn) -- The Spoiler-Filled Reviews Thread

Dan Murrell, who I think is a solid film critic, didn’t like it either.

The RT score is about 86% right now. 8.6 people out of every 10 reviews liked it is a pretty solid number. Far better reviews than dark and gloomy Superman.

Man of Steel was under 60%, Batman v Superman was under 30. Justice League was 39. The Snyder Cut was 71.

Has the same meta score as Superman Returns which in my opinion was the least entertaining Superman movie ever made. The others despite their flaws are fun to watch.

EDIT: after seeing this I’d rank the films

Superman II
Superman
Superman 2025
Snyders Justice League
Man of Steel
Batman v. Superman Directors Cut
Superman III
Superman Returns (least entertaining but still technically solid)
Superman IV (I’d love to see the original cut that tested well before having an hour cut)
Whedon’s Justice League

What's rather troubling is that reportedly the late edits and reshoots were to town down the humor.

Just finished. I loved it. It was everything I wanted and more.

I hope this makes a ton of money because I want to see more. So much better than the Snyder verse.

I was having some similar thoughts about the comparisons Dan Murrell drew between this and the Snyder films. Namely Superman being viewed as a dangerous alien again and too much happening around building the universe right up front.

I also worry a bit about being thrown right into this version of not only Superman but essentially DC. It can work to have a pre-existing universe such as The Batman, but in that case the movie should really just focus on the main character and not add a bunch of side stuff in.

Still hoping it’s good but I feel like this might be a bit of a stumble right out of the gate.

Absolutely loved it. Not a five-star masterpiece but it doesn't need to be; it's really fucking great. 4 out of 5. Crowd ate it up. People were laughing and cheering.

Meh, I thought it was ok, not great. In an attempt to avoid the grim and gritty Snyderverse, they may have swung too far in the opposite direction.

Is Jimmy Olson gay? Why would he be so turned off by Eve Teschmacher?

And they really need to give Lex Luthor a rest.

No. As seen in a Daily Planet scene and Lois comments, Jimmy has a bunch of women interested in him and he finds Eve annoying. And she has ugly feet.

Just came back from a packed theater. People cheered, laughed, applauded. Plenty of little kids in the audience. Noisy at first, but silent and engaged through out the movie. There are pre, mid, and post scenes. Highly recommended!

I genuinely fucking hate Superman as a comic character post 90s but this was legit a solid movie. Clunky second act and maybe a bit too much humor but it works. Hoult is a mediocre Luthor but Guy Gardner and Mr. Terrific are so wonderful I want a JLI movie asap.

Lastly, really loved they kept
Spoiler:
Bizzaro

a solid A from me.

Just refreshing and fun. Is it flawless? No, but it's a heck of a good time I thought and the first Superman movie since Superman II a million years ago that I haven't felt vaguely disappointed by in some way. Really hope it does well at the box office and grimdark Snyderverse superheroics fade away.

Luthor obtains a strand of Clark's hair, resulting in the creation of a dumb superpowered villain. Haven't we seen that before?

https://th.bing.com/th/id/R.52377f95...pid=ImgRaw&r=0

It all comes down to tone... and for me, I didn't enjoy the take on many of these characters: Elon Luthor and his bot farm run by literal monkeys, sloppy drunk party girl Kara, Instagram Eve Teschmacher... Superman repeatedly saying "Dude". Maybe it's superhero movie fatigue, but a lot of the action set pieces were pretty tedious. Didn't care for The Engineer. With her boxer braids, she was giving MMA fighter... and all that black goo nanotech crap looks stale as hell after sitting through umpteen Terminator and Venom movies. Almost as played out as shooting a giant blue laser beam into the sky. For a single movie, there are too many scenes of Superman being weakened and having to retreat to make a recovery (at least three by my count).

I guess the dynamic between Corenswet and Brosnahan was an improvement over Cavill and Adams in the Snyderverse... but the dialogue could be overly quippy (in a more grating way than Joss Whedon) and their performances (while competent) made it feel like I was watching a random episode of a less than stellar HBO Max show. That's also the vibe the whole Daily Planet and Justice Gang crews were giving.. and none of those shows would have gotten a season pass from me. Also, I wasn't expecting Ma & Pa Kettle Kent to talk that country. I read Gunn wanted them to sound like the voicemails from Richard Christy's parents they used to play on The Howard Stern Show. The talk about the burrito restaurant was likely a nod to Richard's love of Taco Tico, the subject of one of his father's voicemails.

I mean, the original Bizarro was formed by Luthor "cloning" Superman in a "Duplicate Ray" so it's on brand. Unless your Superman knowledge starts with The Quest for Peace

Is Ultraman in this movie supposed to be Bizarro? Folks are referring to him as that online. No, I'm not an avid comic reader (despite watching all the Superman live-action movies and most of the TV shows).

whotony 07-10-25 07:36 PM

Re: Superman (2025, D: Gunn) -- The Spoiler-Filled Reviews Thread

He is essentially Bizzaro but Gunn basically borrowed the Ultraman moniker for the movie.

He isn't the Ultraman that was a "multi verse" for lack of a better term, version of a Superman from a different universe

Re: Superman (2025, D: Gunn) -- The Spoiler-Filled Reviews Thread

Haven’t seen it yet, but that’s odd to me. Why not just have used Bizarro proper instead of essentially disguising a different character as that?

Re: Superman (2025, D: Gunn) -- The Spoiler-Filled Reviews Thread

It’s was fine. Corenswet did a good job and Brosnahan was okay.

Didn’t like that Superman spent the whole movie getting his ass kicked.

Luther’s plan was dumb (and a rehash of Superman 1976). And verbally calling the fight moves was so stupid. And Superman just waited for the next command to be relayed instead of hitting Ultraman back.

Was the fact he was a clone supposed to be a big reveal? The Fortress appearing and opening for him gave that away. Should have just revealed it there. It’s not a “mystery” when there is only one possibility.

The Justice Gang was better than I thought they’d be. I liked seeing the Hall of Justice.

Krypto was complexly unnecessary and wildly out of place. Could have easily been removed. I would have rather had Kara in the mix.

Only time I laughed was when Peacemaker showed up but that was pretty great.

I thought the scenes with Ma and Pa Kent were the best part of the movie. Gunn handles emotional beats like that well.

I did like that Lois just knew Clark’s identity. Didn’t need to play that silly game again.

A generous 3 1/2 from me - better than Snyder’s take but that bar was literally sitting on the floor.

There were some emotions with the Kents which I appreciated. But I really thought the movie made the Kents way to country bumpkin. I also thought for such a powerful being Superman spent a lot of his time getting his ass kicked. But still really liked the movie.

I enjoyed the hell out of this. Really liked Corenswet and Brosnahan's chemistry together. Hoult was really good as Lex. The Mr Terrific fight at the camp was cool. Metropolis sure does get beat to hell in these movies. Saw this on Dolby and it sounded awesome and was really loud. I'll see this again on IMAX.

Re: Superman (2025, D: Gunn) -- The Spoiler-Filled Reviews Thread

It wasn't perfect, but I really enjoyed it. I liked this new take on the character. I also liked seeing Superman have some vulnerability and actually struggle taking on some of these opponents.

Corenswet was really good and i liked his chemistry with Brosnahan. Hoult was a pretty crazy and diabolical Lex. He was even more of a nut job than Michael Cudlitz's take on the character. I was surprised how little Clark was in the movie. He really only had 2 scenes.

It's been said many times already, this felt like a movie version of a comic book.

The Peacemaker cameo got a laugh from the audience and I didn't expect to see Supergirl pop up at the end.

I thought the "Justice Gang" was going to be annoying and make it feel bloated, but they actually fit in pretty well. Nathan Fillion was pretty funny as Guy. Mr. Terrific stole the show.

I did think that Gunn made the Kents a little too stereotypical country folks. The accents were a bit much.

Passed on the Superman merch. The cup was $23 and the bucket was $33. Way too rich for me. I ended up getting a nachos, M&M and large drink combo for $17 and change with my AMC credits. More worth it.

Gave it 4 out of 5 stars and maybe an 8.5 out of 10.

A friend of mine gave it a 7 out of 10. He was really unsure at first but ended up enjoying it (though he echoed the sentiments of many here regarding the mid and post-credits scenes). He really liked Corenswet as Superman (and he, like myself, is a fan of Cavill in the role). He was also ambivalent towards Krypto. Said he was cool sometimes and annoying at other times.

So I am warming to the idea of checking it out theatrically, though I am currently thinking I might rent it on Prime down the road instead (like I did for Ballerina).

I was adjusting myself in my seat and looked away right at the first line (didn’t expect the text) so I missed the first bit. I too liked the text - a great alternative to yet another origin story.

Just a fun time watching this iteration of Superman. David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan were absolutely wonderful together and Nicholas Hoult played a great Lex Luthor. Not perfect by any means, but a solid start to the DCU. This was a delightful time with crowd-pleasing moments. Also my first time watching a movie in one of those D-Box seats, pretty nice but don't need to do it again. ****/*****

I'm more of a Marvel Comics guy than a DC Comics guy, but I always under the impression that Bizarro just came from a parallel universe where everything was opposite, like Bizarro World was a cube instead of globe, etc. (Or maybe I'm transposing that Seinfeld episode into the Superman mythos.)

Never liked that character, anyway, finding that "Me am Bizarro" stuff stupid, and, thus, actively avoided comics with Bizarro in it.
