^ My only exposure to the character was in The Suicide Squad. I didn't love that, but Gunn's humor and embrace of the ridiculous played better for me with those characters. Probably because I had little familiarity with of any of them besides Harley Quinn.

I totally get that. I enjoyed both The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker, but I am none too beholden to those characters (especially not Vigilante, who is a lame D-Grade hero in the comics but made so enjoyably goofy in the show). However, a friend of mine who is more hardcore into DC comics than even me absolutely hates Gunn's take on Peacemaker. Given Peacemaker is the basis for The Comedian in Watchmen, I understand where he's coming from, despite my enjoying the Gunn/Cena reinterpretation of the character.Originally Posted by joe_b

Gunn stated that anything that season 2 of Peacemaker doesn't directly acknowledge never happened. So far that is the Justice League cameo at the end of season 1, although there is a multiversal storyline in season 2.Originally Posted by joe_b
I didn't watch it. I know Gunn created the show, but are they planning some Deadpool style meta humor to explain why Cena is now in this continuity? I read Gunn also plans to keep Viola Davis as Amanda Waller. I would have preferred a completely fresh start, but (after seeing this movie) I don't really care anymore.

Caught this yesterday with free IMAX voucher. Overall, it was very entertaining and gave me all I wanted in Superman movie. Kudos to Gunn for keeping the original score by Williams and using it when necessary. I also liked that the movie had a pretty tight running time rather than going for the typical 2 1/2 hours you see with large scale blockbusters these days. The only downside I feel it has, and it wasn't really one for me personally, is that it is 100% a James Gunn movie about Superman and the DC universe. If one isn't into the kind of quirky nature he brings to movies, then this take on Superman probably isn't for you. The cast delivered, and the visuals were great, so I give 4/5 stars.
P.S. I do hope Kara undergoes some kind of character arc in her solo movie. The way she was presented here could get annoying real quick.

I saw it on a Dolby screen. The buzz going in probably messed up my expectations, so I came away a little disappointed. I liked Lois, and I liked Krypto. I didn't care for the Green Lantern character, or the concept of this Justice Gang, but they stuck around and grew on me a little. If somehow this leads us to a true Justice League with the main superheroes, then I'll deal with it, but hopefully their slapstick costumes and dialogue aren't going to be the standard for the Gunn led movies. The Beck Bennett character seemed out of place. Evil clone was a lame villian. Dinosaur thing that somehow grew in minutes didn't make sense, but was okay as an action set piece. Superman wanting to study it instead of kill it seemed okay, but maybe it would have been funny for Superman to ask Lex at the end of the movie how he created it.
After all that, it looks like it will be sticking around on the IMAX screens, so I might check it out again next week. I've been plowing through movies with my A-List, but I'm starting to run out of movies. I'm checking out Abrahams Boys tonight, even though it got terrible reviews, so I can keep my A-list movie count up, only 4 movies so far this month including tonight's movie.

Green Lantern was the best. The middle fingers to tanks was chef’s kiss.

I want to see this at least 1 more time in IMAX, but I will probably wait a few more days as it's still pretty fresh in my mind.
The rest of July is a little light to fill my A-List slots. I know what you did last summer, Fantastic 4 and lastly Naked Gun is pretty much it.

A Struzan-esque poster? Never heard of that flick, but I like seeing a painted poster.

Saw it tonight and enjoyed it. Really liked David Corenswet as Superman. The Fortress of Solitude was cool with the robot helpers. Krypto provided some great comic moments. Also liked the Justice Gang. Agreed that Mr. Terrific is by far the standout. Also cool to see the Hall of Justice on screen.
Not sure how I felt about the message from Superman’s parents. I kept waiting for that to be revealed as something Lex manipulated. Also I do think they made the Kent’s a bit too country bumpkin. Especially Martha.
Lex was fine. A tad annoying and over the top at times but still pretty good. Also liked the Daily Planet staff for the most part. Good portrayal of Lois. She seems very classic.
I also felt like jumping right in worked fine. Didn’t need a lot of setup.

Every established super hero adaptation (especially a reboot of a recent film series) should take note - no more crash landings in Kansas, no more bitten by a radioactive spider scenes, no more pearls falling in a Gotham alley. We get it - get to the new story we're there to see.Originally Posted by Mike86

The fact that Mike86 really liked Superman and Draven didn't hate it leads me to believe this movie is really connecting with audiences

I’ve never hated DC like so many have joked for years. I didn’t like the DCEU/Snyder era, and I obviously wasn’t alone in feeling that way.Originally Posted by Hokeyboy

Just takin the piss
But in my anecdotal observation of friends, family, coworkers, acquaintances, etc, it really does seem like Superman is taking flight.

Yes, Gunn. We all heard you state that already. Originally Posted by Draven

All joking aside, unless we're dealing with an extremely niche character (and even then you might be able to work around the origin story/flashback), I totally agree.

According to Deadline, this is now projected to earn around $123M for it's opening weekend.
It would be the 3rd highest opening among the DCEU movies.

There are going to be some out there who are going to make up all kinds of stupid narratives to satisfy their cynical views. But, this is a huge win for Gunn/Safran and their new DC Studios.

You know what? Good for him! I may be salty about what went down with the DCEU, and I may find that a little of Gunn's humor goes a long way (although it worked 100% for me in Slither and The Suicide Squad), but I am glad that the captain of this particular ship has a hit right out of the gate. That at least gives him (and Safran) the leverage to truly call the shots and have the DCU not end up the rudderless mess the DCEU quickly became.

Just this comment after seeing this today: Just because you can destroy Metropolis with computer effects doesn't mean you should, unless you are willing to show the thousands and thousands of dead bodies that go along with something like that.

Never liked that character, anyway, finding that "Me am Bizarro" stuff stupid, and, thus, actively avoided comics with Bizarro in it.
When he was sucked into that portal all the objects sucked in were cubes so maybe that’s a hint and setting up the Bizarro world Originally Posted by Josh-da-man

I do appreciate this new trend of "evacuation" we're seeing in these movies but let's face it, thousands and thousands of people died when Metropolis was split in half and gigantic buildings fell like dominos into one another. Showing Superman saving a little girl in these situations only drives home that hundreds of other little girls died too. Originally Posted by Count Dooku

I understand the desire of destruction porn but I don't know if it's quite the time to make jokes after it's all over.

Watched this today in IMAX and it was just ok. It;'s kind if dumb that they turned Superman into a chump -- he got his ass kicked throughout the whole thing. It's basically Guardians 4. Also, sucks that they turned Ma and Pa Kent into yokels. I needed subtitles for the gibberish Ma Kent was going on about.
My biggest peeve is that Gunn just can't help himself by adding stupid humor to scenes that should resonate emotionally. You have Lois and Superman in her apartment and then in the background you have the Justice Gang fighting some stupid monster. Also, the scene of Luthor walking into the FOS bugs me because if a drone explodes right next to your head you're gonna get severly burned, lose an eye/go blind. Not just walk in un-phased. GTFO.
I love dogs but Crypto being in every plot point was beyond irritating. He was the foil.
And as far as Metropolis getting destroyed again -- why didn't the pocket dimension thing start in an abandoned forest or area?

Ma and Pa Kent were by far my biggest complaints. Not sure why Gunn felt the need to make them so hickish. Like we get that they’re from Kansas, but that was too over the top for my taste. Especially Martha. Jonathan was more tolerable.

I loved the fact that they were authentic Midwesterners with RIchard Cristy's parents' accents used as a model. It was something new, not the super sexy Costner/Lane/Schneider/O'Tooles of the world. Nor were they Eva Marie Saint elderly. They were Kansas farmers. But they were still Ma and Pa Kent. Well done IMO.
This isn't directed at Mike86 but I've noticed people -- especially fanboys -- love to complain about formula until someone decides to buck against it. Then they complain about that too.

I thought it was fantastic and gave me almost everything I wanted in a Superman flick. A hopeful, bright and cheery Superman in a red & blue suit, and John Williams theme at all the right moments. Brosnahan was a fantastic Lois (probably my favorite since Kidder) and had solid chemistry with Corenswet. Her interviewing him in the apartment might have been my favorite scene. They both knocked in out of the park in that back and forth. First scene Hoult was in had me questioning his casting but man, he ended up crushing it and made me genuinely hate him. I was glad Jimmy Olson got some decent screen time and wasn't just a dorky sidekick. The Justice Gang was fantastic. Mr. Terrific stole the show.
I didn't have any issues with the humor. I thought it was balanced and used well and not near as jokey as Guardians. Likewise for Krypto. I'm not a dog (or any pet) person, but I enjoyed him here. It helped round out Superman's character. Also, no origin story was fantastic. Lex and a land plot could have absolutely failed, but wrapping it up in a weapons deal/manipulating a foreign power was a nice touch to make it relevant to today and not come off as goofy as sinking California for new beachfront property.
In fact, I only really had a few minor gripes. The opening "crawl" says Superman just lost his first fight, but then spends the next two hours getting his ass kicked. What? So he lost his first fight, and second and third and fourth... all in this movie?
I will agree with the majority on the Kents. What should have been an emotional moment giving Clark a pep talk in his "with great power comes great responsibility" moment just fell completely flat because of the country bumpkin delivery.
But those are minor. My biggest gripe is going full hog into the cosmic stuff which detracts from Superman just being a hero to the people of Metropolis. I want to see him saving old ladies and busloads of kids, it's what truly humanizes him and would have went a long way playing into his speech at the end with Lex. Instead we get Kaiju monsters, inter-dimensional octopuses, black holes and pocket dimensions. I get that once you introduce the Lanterns, you have to bring some of that stuff in, but I'd trade 90% of that for more down to earth moments with Superman being a hero (and not getting his ass kicked) and showing why the people love him. All of it felt like it could have been Superman 2 material.
