The Wild Robot (2024) V: Nyong'o, Pascal, O'Hara, Nighy, Hsu, Hamill

The Wild Robot - In Theaters September 27
From DreamWorks Animation comes a new adaptation of a literary sensation, Peter Brown’s beloved, award-winning, #1 New York Times bestseller, The Wild Robot.
The epic adventure follows the journey of a robot—ROZZUM unit 7134, “Roz” for short — that is shipwrecked on an uninhabited island and must learn to adapt to the harsh surroundings, gradually building relationships with the animals on the island and becoming the adoptive parent of an orphaned gosling.
The Wild Robot stars Academy Award® winner Lupita Nyong’o (Us, The Black Panther franchise) as robot Roz; Emmy and Golden Globe nominee Pedro Pascal (The Last of Us, The Mandalorian) as fox Fink; Emmy winner Catherine O’Hara (Schitt’s Creek, Best in Show) as opossum Pinktail; Oscar® nominee Bill Nighy (Living, Love Actually) as goose Longneck; Kit Connor (Heartstopper, Rocketman) as gosling Brightbill and Oscar® nominee Stephanie Hsu (Everything Everywhere All at Once, this summer’s The Fall Guy) as Vontra, a robot that will intersect with Roz’s life on the island.
The film also features the voice talents of Emmy winning pop-culture icon Mark Hamill (Star Wars franchise, The Boy and the Heron), Matt Berry (What We Do in the Shadows, The SpongeBob Movie franchise) and Golden Globe winner and Emmy nominee Ving Rhames (Mission: Impossible films, Pulp Fiction).
A powerful story about the discovery of self, a thrilling examination of the bridge between technology and nature and a moving exploration of what it means to be alive and connected to all living things, The Wild Robot is written and directed by three-time Oscar® nominee Chris Sanders—the writer-director of DreamWorks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon, The Croods, and Disney’s Lilo & Stitch—and is produced by Jeff Hermann (DreamWorks Animation’s The Boss Baby 2: Family Business; co-producer, Kung Fu Panda franchise).
Peter Brown’s The Wild Robot, an illustrated middle-grade novel first published in 2016, became a phenomenon, rocketing to #1 on the New York Times bestseller list. The book has since inspired a trilogy that now includes The Wild Robot Escapes and The Wild Robot Protects. Brown’s work on the Wild Robot series and his other bestselling books have earned him a Caldecott Honor, a Horn Book Award, two E.B. White Awards, two E.B. White Honors, a Children’s Choice Award for Illustrator of the Year, two Irma Black Honors, a Golden Kite Award and a New York Times Best Illustrated Book Award.

My kids haven't been this excited for a new movie in the theaters in a long time. We are making the effort to go on opening night. This looks really fun!

This looks pretty good and my kids are excited about it as well. My middle child is reading the first book in school right now (Apparently it’s a 3 book series).
The positive reviews have me excited for this!

Watched this Saturday morning with the kids. A really amazing movie. I was interested in it when I first saw the trailers. But really want to support it since it's a Dreamworks movie not based on any existing IP. I mean how many times do we get that from studios? So yeah. Get out there and see it.
I thought it was a wonderful story about. I won't spoil anything but it had pretty deep themes about purpose, destiny, found family and squid robots?
I thought the voice casting was good especially Pedro Pascal. He's unrecognizable. Lupito did an excellent job as the titular character. I'm sure there will be a lot of comparisons with other cartoon robots like Wall-E and the Iron Giant. This movie really set itself apart by not really featuring any humans. In fact
. So it really gets down to the relationships one builds with who they chose to call family. It's not quite as awe inspiring (but it certainly is aww inspiring) as Wall-E. It's certainly a beautiful movie but not to the point of realism of Wall-E's world. The art style is quite amazing reminding me of children's book. It doesn't have the certain history charm that the Iron Giant has and it's not a boy and his robot kind of story.
Much like
<- that guy, It will especially resonate with parents.
It's not perfect. The plot is thin and the flow of the movie is really janky, almost like there are scenes missing or that were cut without any transition to remaining scenes.
But it's a wonderfully charming movie filled with a lot of heart. I absolutely love it when animation studios really give their artists the freedom to take on risky projects that aren't made with the thought of selling toys or merchandise. This used to be Disney's forte with movies like the Hunchback of Notre Dame, or Ratatouille or Up. So it's nice to see the normally formulaic Dreamworks to really stretch it's creative muscle. I really hope it does well in the box office. It really deserves to.

Saw this today with my kiddos and it was amazing! I hope this takes the animation Oscar. The visuals were great and the score was very good. I will definitely buy this one.

I wasn't really vibing with the first act but the second act crushed it and as a parent of two college students, an emotional ride. The closing act was reminiscent of Wall-e or Up where it goes somewhere unexpected, but it works for this film and reinforces the second act making this a truly amazing film. I'm looking forward to seeing it again so I can give the first act another shot.
Did anyone else think Hamill and Rhames roles could have been swapped? I guess it would be playing into type but the big giant bear with Rhames deep gravelly voice makes sense on paper. And the peregrine falcon leader role(fighter pilot anyone?) for Hamill instead? Dunno. Maybe Hamill's softer tone for the bear was needed to make him more friendly.

I don’t know if I’ve ever cried at the part where they say the title of the movie before. Now I have.
A really wonderful film that I will revisit a lot.

Ah well, I assume Universal knows what they're doing.

I'll grab this on Apple as soon as it goes on sale for a decent price. $30 for a digital movie is a little bit ridiculous.

Damn, that figure is cool as fuck, but a $200 pre-order for third quarter next year? That's a long wait.
Candyrocket - do you know if they charge now or later?

Other than the figure by Blitzway, the "Art of " book, the original books and a few plush toys, there's hardly any merchandise for this film.
That is a damn shame.
(added some updated pics of Blitzway's Roz above).

Caught an IMAX show today. I was the only one in the 300+ person auditorium.
Anyway, I absolutely loved it. An exciting and emotional adventure with some really great character development.
I know there are some here who don't watch animated movies because they think they are "Kiddie" movies, but that is hardly the case here. Some really emotional themes that I think will resonate with both adults and children. Don't ignore it or dismiss it.
The big finale was really exciting and emotional.
Highly Highly recommended.

I never understood people who just totally dismiss animated movies as kiddie fare. Totally ridiculous.

especially with the adult centric anime's that are so fantastic. I don't think too many kids would appreciate the art or story of such great anime's that have come out over the years.
