Based on that alternative definition, I'm going to go with "Amadeus" or "The Social Network" as the best SH movie of all time.

To this day, there are folks who will argue that X2 still holds up as an example of the best Superhero film out there, and they will hold it in higher regard than Superman, The Dark Knight, and probably even most of the MCU films.
With X2, I kind-of get it...it just worked, and I understand why at the very minimum, X2 always tends to end up in most folks top 5 superhero/comic book films. For all the violence and "cool" scenes with Wolverine in his costume going to town on the baddies in D & W, one of the best scenes with Wolverine going berserk with his claws is the mansion scene in X2, a scene that is not topped by anything in D & W.
Superman will forever be considered the gold standard film to put every Superhero/Comic film that has been made since up against, as it is just a ridiculously enjoyable movie.
I even like the Superman flies so fast in an opposite direction around earth that he turns back time ending. A scene that even as a kid did not strike me as accurate but you roll with it because who wants to see Lois Lane swallowed up by the earth during an earthquake.
So maybe not the best Superhero film ever, but I can see this film being in most folks top 5 all time comic book film lists for many, many, many more years to come.

Probably second.
To me the Toby Maguire Spider-Man is. Willem Dafoe should have won the Oscar. Yeah I was shunned when I said it then too.
That move to me is as close to perfect as one of them can get.

...and that trick was even re-used in the Donner cut!
Even watching that as a kid, I knew that was horrible cheat. And, on top of that, I puzzled it out for a bit and came to the conclusion that stopping the Earth's rotation and putting it in reverse would not turn back time but would, most likely, be catastrophic with stuff going on like the oceans flooding the land masses (like trying to run with a bowl full of liquid), and maybe even ripping the crust from the mantle.
When a kindergartner can call bullshit on a plot point in your movie, you know you done screwed up!

Yep. Superman is one of if not the only super hero that was born the way he is. Most of the rest got bit or attacked by something, were part of a military experiment gone wrong or the classic billionaire looking to make a difference. All of those backstories are fine but Superman is fairly unisue in this regard. So is Thor & Wonder Woman.

Kal-El was born this way (making him a gay icon) but not born with any superpowers. The superpowers they has on Earth are a result of this solar system's yellow sun on his Kryptonian body. So, technically, they does not have any natural powers. Superman's superiority is just as artificial as Peter Parker's body be acted upon by the radioactive spider venom. On the other hand, Martian Manhunter's powers are just him being a Martian (right?). J'onn J'onnz is super wherever he goes in the universe.

Superman is more of a gay icon than Sir Patrick Stewart? I think not!

Re: Is Superman (78) the best superhero movie, ever?

I was at the Warner Bros lot tonight for Superman Day and we got to screen Superman 1978 as part of the tour.
TCM host Ben Mankiewicz and Jim Lee were part of an early Q&A session prior to the movie. At least 300 to 400 people were in the audience. Tour groups were broken up into groups of 20. There was food and shopping and we got to see costumes and sets. I posted more in the weekend thread in Other Talk.
Anyway, I’ve seen this movie so many times, but I had a blast tonight. Such a great communal experience. We laughed, cheered and applauded at various moments in the movie, including the end when Superman flew around earth. That’s the magic of watching movies and being in a big theater among fans. The movie is 47 years old and everyone including myself was loving it.
