Well this was... a movie...that I watched.
Clooney & Pitt are fun to watch together but this movie was a slog. It's billed as an action comedy but there's next to no action. The biggest action sequence was behind closed doors in the garage that we didn't even see. It looked like John Wick ran through there and we didn't get to see it. On the humor front, it was lacking there too with just a couple of chuckles (which were probably in the first 10 minutes where they both show up at the crime scene, and those were ruined in the trailer). If the story was the slightest bit interesting (it wasn't), then maybe it could have carried the other lacking areas. When they showed up at the kids dad's house, I half expected Matt Damon to open the door (not Richard Kind, whose talent was wasted in this nothing role). That would have at least been something interesting.
If someone told me this was filmed in about two weeks, I wouldn't be surprised. I can't recall the last movie I watched that was this bad, just an all around waste of two hours.

I enjoyed this quite a bit for what it was. It wasn’t perfect but it was enjoyable enough for Clooney and Pitt alone. Pitt had some great facial expressions throughout.
That said, the script definitely could have gone through another pass before it was complete. I thought Amy Ryan’s character as well as Pitt’s hotel manager boss were going to show up again at the end or at least have some sort of impact on the plot.
This also needed a a better director. Jon Watts just doesn’t have what this movie needed. Someone like Soderbergh or the Coen Bros. could have really turned this movie into something special.
There was one small detail I really liked though, near the end, Pitt grabs a gun out of Clooney’s trunk that he’d never shot before. Before going after the bad guys, he takes a couple practice shots at a sign to zero in the sight. Little touches like that make movies for me!

Although I'm fully aware of the time frame that the narrative is set in, Director/Writer Jon Watts somehow makes New York City look absolutely lifeless.
I noticed during the end credits that Pitt's hotel manager was played by Frances McDormand.

Also, seeing that it was McDormand made me wish this had been directed by the Coen Bros. even more.

We made it through about half of this. It was fucking awful.
What a waste of money resources and talent

Watts has given Deadline an exclusive explanation of his view of what happened. Here goes:
“I showed Apple my final cut of Wolfs early this year,” Watts told Deadline. “They were extremely enthusiastic about it and immediately commissioned me to start writing a sequel. But their last minute shift from a promised wide theatrical release to a streaming release was a total surprise and made without any explanation or discussion. I wasn’t even told about it until less than a week before they announced it to the world. I was completely shocked and asked them to please not include the news that I was writing a sequel. They ignored my request and announced it in their press release anyway, seemingly to create a positive spin to their streaming pivot. And so I quietly returned the money they gave me for the sequel. I didn’t want to talk about it because I was proud of the film and didn’t want to generate any unnecessary negative press. I loved working with Brad and George (and Amy and Austin and Poorna and Zlatko) and would happily do it again. But the truth is that Apple didn’t cancel the Wolfs sequel, I did, because I no longer trusted them as a creative partner.”

I'm not heart broken over the fact, there won't be a sequel, since the movie was just ok and wouldn't have worked with most actors, but I understand Watts for not trusting Apple anymore. On the other hand I do understand Apple's decision. This is sadly the wrong movie for today's landscape. Mediocre star vehicles have moved on to Netflix.

If I wanted to watch Brad Pitt and George Clooney wank each other off for a big paycheck I’d watch any of the Oceans movies. After Oceans 12 they won’t be fooling me again.
