Tom Wilkinson dies aged 75
British Oscar-nominated actor Tom Wilkinson, best known for his role in The Full Monty, has died aged 75, his family have announced.
His death was confirmed in a statement shared by his agent on behalf of his family.
The statement read: “It is with great sadness that the family of Tom Wilkinson announce that he died suddenly at home on December 30. His wife and family were with him.
“The family asks for privacy at this time.”
In an acting career spanning six decades, Wilkinson was nominated for Academy Awards for actor in a leading role for In The Bedroom in 2001, and actor in a supporting role for Michael Clayton in 2007.
He played Gerald Cooper in the hit 1997 British film The Full Monty about a group of former steel workers in Sheffield who form a male striptease act.
He most recently reunited with his co-stars, Robert Carlyle and Mark Addy, in a Disney+ series of the same name.
The original film won an Oscar for best original musical or comedy score and was nominated for three others, including best picture and best director.
Wilkinson’s other most notable films include Batmam Begins, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

It's hard to get too upset about a Denzel win, but I always thought he should have won the Oscar that year for In the Bedroom. Playing a charismatic exploding character feels easier than playing an imploding character.
Though to be equally fair, my personal favorite performance that year (Hackman in Royal Tenenbaums) wasn't even nominated.

I don’t think he was ever a big mainstream star, but a very underrated and solid actor.
I remember he had an uncredited part in Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol has the IMF secretary.
Sad that he passed before the new year. The wording makes it sound like this was a sudden passing. His IMDB shows he was still working and has a few projects that were in production.

He had some great performances in his career. In The Bedroom and Michael Clayton stand out, but The Full Monty, RocknRolla, Recount, Valkyrie, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Selma and The Exorcism Of Emily Rose were also great.
He also shined in The Kennedys.

Reminds me that I have to finish watching The Full Monty series. I had to suspend viewing as it was emotionally overwhelming, at one point.
I've always liked him, and this is sad to hear.

RIP really sucks since he was good in everything he did and thought we would be seeing more of his work in the coming years.
Full Monty is not the first thing or the best thing he is know for that comes to mind according to all the media articles
It was not his best known work but I loved Felony with him and Joel Edgerton and In the Bedroom of course.

This is sad news. Fine talent. Could seemingly effortlessly go from charming and loveable to ruthless and terrifying.

Even in an over-qualified cast of 7 (soon to be 8) Oscar nominees, he really stood out in Batman Begins. I never really expected that sort of menacing performance from him. Loved it.

sad. i just saw him in Batman Begins. In the Bedroom was a terrific movie. such a great resume.
