11 and yeah, we've had the talk, but we don't think she's ready, in terms of maturity. She hasn't seen The Terminator in a couple years and we skipped over that scene. Maybe that should be her "first" like it was for so many of us!

I know every family has a different view on sexual content, but I didn't think the nudity/sex in this movie was anything gratuitous.

It's also possible that she would be kind of bored by the film at that age, I know my 14 year old daughter would have been (of course, every kid is different). To be honest, 14 year old me probably would have been bored, except for the sex and nudity.

Her favorite movie is 2001. And she's more excited for 2une than I am. She'll be okay. I may have to see it first, it sounds like, without a clear "this is what happens when."

I know what the two sexual scenes with nudity were, but since the movie jumps around in time, I can't tell you when the scenes occur in the plot.
It's interesting because this a pretty serious movie, and if your 11 year old wants to see it, I would consider that they may be intellectually mature enough to understand the inclusion of these scenes as a presentation of adult matter in a movie for mature viewers, and not as something meant to be gratuitous or titillating. Also, it's Florence Pugh, who is a beautiful woman but not the standard Hollywood bombshell body type. Maybe your daughter will take something positive away from that.
However, of course, it is your family, and you may just have to explain that the movie rated R for a reason, and she will have to wait until you can screen it at home.
I just feel bad because she is going to be left out when school starts in a month and all the other kids in the sixth grade are talking about J Robert Oppenheimer and Lewis Strauss.

I just saw it and I thought it was great, but it's very dense. And there's too much mumbling, I could have used subtitles. I can't imagine someone coming in completely blind understanding everything, but I saw it with my niece and nephew and they both loved it, despite the abundance of characters and tons of dialogue involved. They were kind of disappointed when I told them the apple thing and the Einstein at the pond bit were "creative license" aka not true.
And here's the best film to watch after "Oppenheimer", Shohei Imamura's "Black Rain" which is on YouTube:

The apple thing happened, though?
According to Oppenheimer's friend Francis Fergusson, Oppenheimer once confessed to leaving an apple doused with noxious chemicals on Blackett's desk, after which Oppenheimer's parents convinced the university authorities not to press criminal charges or expel him, but Oppenheimer was placed on probation and had to have regular sessions with a psychiatrist in Harley Street, London.[20][21]

This is quietly expected to pass $400m worldwide this weekend. Not bad for a movie that some suspected wouldn't recoup it's cost + PA.

I fully expect to see Oppenheimer back in theaters/on IMAX screens after Thanksgiving - both to get it back in Academy voters' minds and because we already have a number of holiday releases pushed to 2024 (with more perhaps on the way).

I was actually telling a friend before the news came out regarding its extended IMAX run that it would definitely be making another appearance during awards season.

I've read many reviews that don't echo these feelings but I thought the final act was quite riveting.

The apple story is explored a lot in the excellent biography 'American Prometheus' the movie is based upon - it's established nobody is entirely sure whether he actually tried to kill the teacher but he got in a lot of serious trouble at Cambridge and had serious mental issues as a young man, so the story isn't really creative license, it's directly inspired by the biography.

I really liked Oppenheimer. Found it fascinating throughout. Was kind of curious what the final hour would be about (checked my watch and the post-bomb celebration happened at almost exactly the 2 hour mark). Wasn’t sure that last hour was working, then suddenly it clicked and I was pretty riveted. My friend had seen it on Friday and said certain Oscar for RDJ — for a long while I didn’t know what he was thinking, then it became clear he’s probably right. On The Big Picture podcast, Sean Fennessey made a JFK comparison, and I think that is pretty spot-on. The rapid cutting, the non-stop barrage of new recognizable faces, the oppressive urgency and conspiratorial feeling.
Murphy was so good in this, he’s really a revelation. I was never a fan of his, found him too creepy and distant, but clearly this is the role of a lifetime for him.
This was probably my third-favorite Nolan film after Memento and The Dark Knight. It really worked for me and the cross-cutting in time, while at first seemed unnecessary, was never boring and kind of paid off at the end.
Unfortunately, I missed the first 10 minutes or so. I got to the theater for a 4:00 show around 4:05, then there was a huge line of people trying to get into the multiplex to see Barbie so that took like another 5 minutes just to get in. No biggie though, I’ll just miss a couple of previews. I get to the theater and they’re showing Oppenheimer meeting Einstein. I look to the usher standing there, with a confused look on my face. He explains they didn’t show any previews and started the movie at 4. WTF??? I have never seen that happen ever in a non-art house theater. It’s just never done. It’s just understood with reserved seats that you have 15-20 minutes of leeway. It messed up the experience for a lot of stunned people filing into the theater “late”. I may stop by the AMC today to catch the first 10-15 minutes (I have A-List), just to catch what I missed and then leave.

Edit: guess it's my turn to admit that I should have read the entire thread before commenting.
Also anyone find it kind of funny how, if you were like me in the early 2000's, you were calling the theater's customer service line to ask which showings of movies were playing in the digital theaters and now we're driving long distances to watch the film presentation of a movie.

I thought it was well done. Well directed, extremely well acted. But, besides from the broad strokes of the plot, I found it pretty hard to follow. It was just difficult to figure out what was at stake and who was doing what to whom during the trails. That could have entirely been my fault for staying up and watching it at a noon showing after having worked all night (Why aren't there 0800 showings of movies anywhere?
) And while the movie was 3 hours long and it kept my attention it felt like it was a 5 hour movie condensed into a 3 hour movie. It was tiring to keep up with the dialogue. Also felt like I was getting sonically assaulted every 30 seconds without any warning. It was extremely well done but pretty much a one and done. Not really going to want to revisit this one, not anytime soon anyways.
I agree with Cillian Murphy and RDJ deserving an oscar nod.

For those saying that it "wasn't worth it" watching in IMAX because there are no big action set pieces I present this very well worded and crafted rebuttal.

Saw this last night on regular IMAX. Incredible film and well worth the money for IMAX. It did not feel like a 3 hr film.
There was a younger girl (11-13ish) next to me and was very uncomfortable during the Florence Pugh intimate scenes.

Sheesh...I would have been the one uncomfortable during those scenes sitting next to an 11 year old girl. Call me a prude but I just don't think that's really appropriate for that young of an age.

Was pretty enthralled with most of this film, especially early on...it just felt like next level filmmaking. Really just a handful of nitpicks. (the awkward nude vision scene being the biggest) and yes it was hard to hear some lines, most notably Blunt for me. Regarding the films structure - I wonder if incorporating more of the post bomb storyline throughout would've helped, so we still end largely on the climax of the bomb with 20+ minutes dealing with the later years instead of 45-50. (was it really an hour? Didn't feel like it to me)
Definitely top shelf award nominations incoming...well deserved. Will definitely take in a 2nd IMAX viewing during it's 4th week.
