Dumb Money (D: Gillespie) S: Rogen, Dano, Stan, Davidson, Woodley
EXCLUSIVE: After signing on to the project in April, Craig Gillespie has lined up an all-star cast of faces familiar to the director. Sources tell Deadline that Paul Dano, Seth Rogen, Sebastian Stan and Pete Davidson are on board for Black Bear Pictures’ Dumb Money, an adaptation of Ben Mezrich’s book The Antisocial Network, with Gillespie directing. Rebecca Angelo & Lauren Schuker Blum are adapting with Ryder Picture Company’s Aaron Ryder, Black Bear’s Teddy Schwarzman and Gillespie producing.
Deadline has been all over this project going back to when the film was set up at MGM, which landed the rights to Mezrich’s manuscript in January. The project recently moved over to Black Bear, which is planning to launch sales on the film at this month’s Toronto Film Festival through its Black Bear International division led by John Friedberg. Executive producers include Michael Heimler, Friedberg, Andrew Swett, Angelo, Schuker Blum, Mezrich, Johnny Holland, Tyler Winklevoss, Cameron Winklevoss and Kevin Ulrich.

Black Bear Pictures is fully financing, with Black Bear International handling the foreign distribution rights. UTA Independent Film Group is representing the U.S. rights to the film.
Principal photography will begin in October on Dumb Money, which tells the story of fortunes won and lost overnight in the David-vs.-Goliath GameStop short squeeze that might have ended up changing Wall Street forever. It offers a gripping portrayal of how a loosely affiliated group of private investors and internet trolls on a subreddit called WallStreetBets took down one of the biggest hedge funds on Wall Street, firing the first shot in a revolution that threatened to upend the establishment.
“Black Bear has diamond hands for Dumb Money,”Schwarzman said. “Lauren & Rebecca have masterfully adapted Ben Mezrich’s exceptional book detailing one of the greatest underdog stories of our time. Craig Gillespie is a tremendous leader with exceptional vision and has assembled a tremendous ensemble. We’re honored to partner with him, Aaron Ryder, and this terrific team in front and behind the camera to bring Dumb Money to audiences everywhere.”

Dumb Money (2023, D: Gillespie) S: Dano, Davidson, D'Onofio, Ferrara, Woodley, Rogen, Offerman, Stan
You can’t make this $hit up. Get invested in the insane true story that shocked the world. Coming exclusively to movie theaters September 22.
Dumb Money is the ultimate David vs. Goliath tale, based on the insane true story of everyday people who flipped the script on Wall Street and got rich by turning GameStop (yes, the mall videogame store) into the world’s hottest company. In the middle of everything is regular guy Keith Gill (Paul Dano), who starts it all by sinking his life savings into the stock and posting about it. When his social posts start blowing up, so does his life and the lives of everyone following him. As a stock tip becomes a movement, everyone gets rich – until the billionaires fight back, and both sides find their worlds turned upside down.
Dumb Money also stars Pete Davidson, Vincent D’Onofrio, America Ferrera, Nick Offerman, Anthony Ramos, Sebastian Stan, Shailene Woodley and Seth Rogen. Directed by Craig Gillespie, written by Lauren Schuker Blum & Rebecca Angelo, based on the book “The Antisocial Network” by Ben Mezrich.

It’s definitely an interesting story.
I’ve seen a few movies directed by Craig Gillespie that were alright but I can’t help but think Adam McKay would have killed it with this movie.

It looks this is the updated release schedule:
"Craig Gillespie’s Dumb Money, which is making its Toronto Film Festival world premiere this weekend, is still on course for a three-step platform release September 15 (in LA & NYC) and September 22, but will now break wide on September 29 instead of October 6."

Saw this Monday, it was the Regal Mystery movie.
I thought it was pretty good. I've always liked Paul Dano. I knew about the story, and I have a general understanding of stocks/investing but some of this didn't make sense to me, but wasn't enough to distract from the movie.
I'm not a huge Pete Davidson fan, but he was pretty damn funny in here. Almost every one of his lines were funny or led up to a pay off.
They played WAP (Megan Thee Stallion) a few times. I was cracking up, but I didn't notice anyone leaving, and couldn't believe it. You usually get a mixed crowd in these Mystery movies and a few times I have seen people leave, mostly older peeps. But, it wasn't that crowded.
Apparently one of the hedge fund owners is suing over his depiction in the movie.

I enjoyed this. Gillespie really has a knack for these true story films.
It is a great performance from Dano who has really been on a role lately.

I haven't looked up AMC in awhile. I saw their stock tanked last month, and is now priced around where the ape buying occurred. But something about converting APE stock to AMC stock and diluting stock - things that are beyond my understanding.
Ultimately, did the apes still make money?

Amazing how much Dano looks like Roaring Kitty.

This has gotten great reviews and word of mouth. But, honestly I can't say I'm really that interested in the topic. The Meme stock scandal that basically saved Gamestop and AMC doesn't really interest me that much. Maybe we'll see. Maybe next weekend.
I have The Creator and Saw X on my theatrical viewing list this week.

This is pretty slight, but a lot of fun. Definitely in the same ballpark as something like Air, though that one is better.
My primary takeaway is that as little as I know or understand about the market, it's still more than what I know or understand about tik-tok/Reddit/YouTube.

I enjoyed this, more than Air but not Blackberry. I don't know much about stocks, and wished certain things had been explained more. I'm sure there is a comprehensive documentary a YouTuber has up that will fill me in better, but entertainment-wise the movie was a hit for me.
